TitleStatistics and Analysis of Scientific Data
Author(s)Bonamente, Massimiliano
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer New York, 2013.
DescriptionXV, 301 p : online resource
Abstract NoteStatistics and Analysis of Scientific Data covers the foundations of probability theory and statistics, and a number of numerical and analytical methods that are essential for the present-day analyst of scientific data. Topics covered include probability theory, distribution functions of statistics, fits to two-dimensional datasheets and parameter estimation, Monte Carlo methods and Markov chains. Equal attention is paid to the theory and its practical application, and results from classic experiments in various fields are used to illustrate the importance of statistics in the analysis of scientific data. The main pedagogical method is a theory-then-application approach, where emphasis is placed first on a sound understanding of the underlying theory of a topic, which becomes the basis for an efficient and proactive use of the material for practical applications. The level is appropriate for undergraduates and beginning graduate students, and as a reference for the experienced researcher. Basic calculus is used in some of the derivations, and no previous background in probability and statistics is required.??The book includes many numerical tables of data, as well as exercises and examples to aid the students' understanding of the topic

TitleThe H-Function : Theory and Applications
Author(s)Mathai, A.M;Saxena, Ram Kishore;Haubold, Hans J
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer New York, 2010.
DescriptionXIV, 268 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe topics of special H-function and fractional calculus are currently undergoing rapid changes both in theory and application. Taking into account the latest research results, the authors delve into these topics as they relate to applications to problems in statistics, physics, and engineering, particularly in condensed matter physics, plasma physics, and astrophysics. The book sets forth the definitions, contours, existence conditions, and particular cases for the H-function, then explores the properties and relationships among the Laplace, Fourier, Hankel, and other transforms. From here, the H-functions are utilized for applications in statistical distribution theory, structures of random variables, generalized distributions, Mathai???s pathway models, and versatile integrals. Functions of matrix argument are introduced with a focus on real-valued scalar functions when the matrices are real or Hermitian positive-definite. The text concludes with important recent applications to physical problems in reaction, diffusion, reaction-diffusion theory and statistics, and superstatistics. Generalized entropies as well as applications in astrophysics are dealt with. Over the last few years, material in this book has been added to various courses and developed to meet the needs of scholars at the PhD level. All exercises in the book have been used to probe the knowledge and ability of mathematics, statistics, and physics to students and researchers.

TitleNonparametric Functional Estimation and Related Topics
Author(s)Roussas, G.G
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1991.
DescriptionXIII, 708 p : online resource
Abstract NoteAbout three years ago, an idea was discussed among some colleagues in the Division of Statistics at the University of California, Davis, as to the possibility of holding an international conference, focusing exclusively on nonparametric curve estimation. The fruition of this idea came about with the enthusiastic support of this project by Luc Devroye of McGill University, Canada, and Peter Robinson of the London School of Economics, UK. The response of colleagues, contacted to ascertain interest in participation in such a conference, was gratifying and made the effort involved worthwhile. Devroye and Robinson, together with this editor and George Metakides of the University of Patras, Greece and of the European Economic Communities, Brussels, formed the International Organizing Committee for a two week long Advanced Study Institute (ASI) sponsored by the Scientific Affairs Division of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). The ASI was held on the Greek Island of Spetses between July 29 and August 10, 1990. Nonparametric functional estimation is a central topic in statistics, with applications in numerous substantive fields in mathematics, natural and social sciences, engineering and medicine. While there has been interest in nonparametric functional estimation for many years, this has grown of late, owing to increasing availability of large data sets and the ability to process them by means of improved computing facilities, along with the ability to display the results by means of sophisticated graphical procedures

TitleMaximum-Entropy and Bayesian Spectral Analysis and Estimation Problems : Proceedings of the Third Workshop on Maximum Entropy and Bayesian Methods in Applied Statistics, Wyoming, U.S.A., August 1???4, 1983
Author(s)Smith, C.R;Erickson, G
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1987.
Description332 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThis volume has its origin in the third ??Workshop on Maximum-Entropy and Bayesian Methods in Applied Statistics,?? held at the University of Wyoming, August 1 to 4, 1983. It was anticipated that the proceedings of this workshop could not be prepared in a timely fashion, so most of the papers were not collected until a year or so ago. Because most of the papers are in the nature of advancing theory or solving specific problems, as opposed to status reports, it is believed that the contents of this volume will be of lasting interest to the Bayesian community. The workshop was organized to bring together researchers from differ?? ent fields to examine critically maximum-entropy and Bayesian methods in science, engineering, medicine, economics, and other disciplines. Some of the papers were chosen specifically to kindle interest in new areas that may offer new tools or insight to the reader or to stimulate work on pressing problems that appear to be ideally suited to the maximum-entropy or Bayes?? ian method

TitleA Modern Course on Statistical Distributions in Scientific Work : Proceedings of the NATO Advanced Study Institute held at the University of Calgagry, Calgary, Alberta, Canada July 29 ??? August 10, 1974
Author(s)Patil, Ganapati P;Kotz, S;Ord, J.K
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1975.
DescriptionXX, 424 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThese three volumes constitute the edited Proceedings of the NATO Advanced Study Institute on Statistical Distributions in Scientific Work held at the University of Calgary from July 29 to August 10, 1974. The general title of the volumes is "Statistical Distributions in Scientific Work". The individual volumes are: Volume 1 - Models and Structures; Volume 2 - Model Building and Model Selection; and Volume 3 - Characterizations and Applications. These correspond to the three advanced seminars of the Institute devoted to the respective subject areas. The planned activities of the Institute consisted of main lectures and expositions, seminar lectures and study group dis?? cussions, tutorials and individual study. The activities included meetings of editorial committees to discuss editorial matters for these proceedings which consist of contributions that have gone through the usual refereeing process. A special session was organized to consider the potential of introducing a course on statistical distributions in scientific modeling in the curriculum of statistics and quantitative studies. This session is reported in Volume 2. The overall perspective for the Institute is provided by the Institute Director, Professor G. P. Pati1, in his inaugural address which appears in Volume 1. The Linnik Memorial Inaugural Lecture given by Professor C. R. Rao for the Characterizations Seminar is included in Volume 3
