Title | Homo Novus - A Human Without Illusions |
Author(s) | Frey, Ulrich J;St??rmer, Charlotte;Willf??hr, Kai P |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2010. |
Description | XIV, 291 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | Converging evidence from disciplines including sociobiology, evolutionary psychology and human biology forces us to adopt a new idea of what it means to be a human. As cherished concepts such as free will, na??ve realism, humans as creation's crowning glory fall and our moral roots in ape group dynamics become clearer, we have to take leave of many concepts that have been central to defining our humanness. What emerges is a new human, the homo novus, a human being without illusions. Leading authors from many different fields explore these issues by addressing these illusions and providing evidence for the need to switch to this new idea of man, in spite of understandable reluctance to let go of our most beloved illusions |

Title | Humans in Space : The Psychological Hurdles |
Author(s) | Kanas, Nick |
Publication | Cham, Springer International Publishing, 2015. |
Description | XIV, 149 p. 43 illus., 41 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | Using anecdotal reports from astronauts and cosmonauts, and the results from studies conducted in space analog environments on Earth and in the actual space environment, this book broadly reviews the various psychosocial issues that affect space travelers. Unlike other books that are more technical in format, this text is targeted for the general public. With the advent of space tourism and the increasing involvement of private enterprise in space, there is now a need to explore the impact of space missions on the human psyche and on the interpersonal relationships of the crewmembers. Separate chapters of the book deal with psychosocial stressors in space and in space analog environments; psychological, psychiatric, interpersonal, and cultural issues pertaining to space missions; positive growth-enhancing aspects of space travel; the crew-ground interaction; space tourism; countermeasures for dealing with space; and unique aspects of a trip to Mars, the outer solar system, and interstellar travel. |

Title | The Protos Mandate : A Scientific Novel |
Author(s) | Kanas, Nick |
Publication | Cham, Springer International Publishing, 2014. |
Description | VII, 142 p. 4 illus., 3 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | In the 25th Century, the effects of overpopulation and global warming on Earth have led to the formation of human colonies on the Moon, Mars and elsewhere in the Solar System, yet the limited number of viable places forces humanity to look to the stars.??A crash program has been developed to send Protos 1, a giant multigenerational starship, to a newly discovered Earth-like planet orbiting a nearby star. The plan is for awake crewmembers to run the ship, and for people in suspended animation to be roused before planetfall to use their skills in exploration and colony formation. To fulfill the goals of the mission and ensure that the in-flight population does not deplete the limited resources, the Protos Mandate is set up to govern a tightly controlled social system for the duration of the journey, which will take several generations.????But problems threaten to sabotage the mission during its launch and transit, and what finally awaits the crewmembers shocks them in an unpredictable way.?? This novel chronicles the trials and tribulations of this epic first interstellar mission.?? ?? The scientific appendix at the end of the book discusses the challenges of such an interstellar mission based on an extensive literature review, and it links these challenges to specific episodes in the novel.?? Issues that are considered include interstellar propulsion systems, economic considerations of interstellar flight, psychological and sociological factors inherent in a multigenerational space mission, problems with suspended animation, current knowledge of exoplanets, and issues related to colonizing a distant planet and the possible discovery of extraterrestrial life.??A history of interstellar missions in science fiction is also reviewed.?? ?? Nick Kanas is an Emeritus Professor of Psychiatry at the University of California, San Francisco, where he directed the group therapy training program. For over 20 years he conducted research in group therapy, and for nearly 20 years after that he was the Principal Investigator of NASA-funded research on astronauts and cosmonauts. He is the co-author of Space Psychology and Psychiatry, which won the 2004 International Academy of Astronautics Life Science Book Award. Dr. Kanas has presented talks on space psychology and on celestial mapping at several regional and World Con science fiction conventions. He has been an amateur astronomer for over 50 years and is an avid reader of science fiction. He is also the author of Star Maps: History, Artistry, and Cartography, Solar System Maps: From Antiquity to the Space Age, and the science fiction novel??The New Martians, all published by Springer |

Title | The New Martians : A Scientific Novel |
Author(s) | Kanas, Nick |
Publication | Cham, Springer International Publishing, 2014. |
Description | VIII, 123 p. 2 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | The year is 2035, and the crew from the first expedition to Mars is returning to Earth. The crewmembers are anxious to get home, and ennui pervades the ship. The mood is broken by a series of mysterious events that jeopardize their safety. Someone or something is threatening the crew. Is it an alien being? A psychotic crewmember? A malfunctioning computer? The truth raises questions about the crewmembers??? fate and that of the human race. ??In this novel, the intent is to show real psychological ??issues that could affect a crew returning from a long-duration mission to Mars. The storyline presents a mystery that keeps the reader guessing, yet the issues at stake are based on the findings from the author???s research and other space-related work over the past 40+ years. The novel touches on actual plans being discussed for such an expedition as well as notions involving the search for Martian life and panspermia. The underlying science, in particular the psychological, psychiatric, and interpersonal elements, are introduced and discussed by the author in an extensive appendix. Title | Essential Building Blocks of Human Nature |
Author(s) | Frey, Ulrich J;St??rmer, Charlotte;Willf??hr, Kai P |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2011. |
Description | XIV, 159 p. 67 illus., 11 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | To understand why we humans are as we are, it is necessary to look at the essential building blocks that??comprise our nature. The foundations of this structure??are??our evolutionary origins as primates and our social roots. Upon these rest features such as our??emotions, language and aesthetic preferences, with our??self-perceptions, self-deceptions and thirst for knowledge right at the top. The unifying force holding these blocks together is evolutionary theory. Evolution provides a deeper understanding of??human nature and, in particular,??of the??common roots of these different perspectives. To build a reliable and coherent model of man, leading authors from fields as diverse as primatology, anthropology, neurobiology and philosophy have joined forces to present essays?? each describing their own expert perspective. Together they provide a convincing and complete picture of our own human??nature |
