TitleDoing the Impossible : George E. Mueller and the Management of NASA???s Human Spaceflight Program
Author(s)Slotkin, Arthur L
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer New York, 2012.
DescriptionXXV, 306 p. 20 illus., 9 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis excellent account of one of the most important personalities in early American human spaceflight history describes for the first time how George E. Mueller, the system manager of the human spaceflight program of the 1960s, applied the SPO methodology and other special considerations, resulting in the success of the Apollo Program. While Wernher von Braun and others did not really readily accept Mueller's approach to system management, they later acknowledged that without it NASA would not have landed astronauts on the Moon by 1969. While Apollo remained Mueller's top priority, from his earliest days at the agency he promoted a robust post-Apollo program, which culminated in Skylab, the Space Shuttle, and the International Space Station. As a result of these efforts, Mueller earned the sobriquet: "the father of the Space Shuttle."

TitleThe Story of Manned Space Stations : An Introduction
Author(s)Baker, Philip
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer New York, 2007.
DescriptionXVIII, 170 p. 36 illus., 24 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NotePhilip Baker charts the history of manned space stations from the very beginning in a logical, chronological order. He tells the story of the two major space powers starting out on their very separate programs, but slowly coming together through ASTP, Shuttle-Mir, and the ISS, and includes programs that rarely get mentioned - the US Manned Orbiting Laboratory, and the Soviet Almaz station, both military backed projects. The Mir space station was one of the greatest human achievements in modern history, and a thorough telling of its story is essential to this book. During its life it grew and evolved into a truly international outpost, with visitors from all over the world taking advantage of the only permanent space station in orbit at that time. This book will be the only one of its kind to tell the whole story of the manned space stations from both nations, from the very beginning, to the current ISS story, and to the possibilities beyond. Each chapter of this book will contain interviews with many of the primary participants, including the astronauts, cosmonauts, designers, mission controllers, doctors and managers most directly involved in the flights. The author paints a vivid picture of two competing nations slowly coming together to form an alliance that is shaky and uncertain to begin with, but grows from fierce competition into solid collaboration

TitleRussian Space Probes : Scientific Discoveries and Future Missions
Author(s)Harvey, Brian;Zakutnyaya, Olga
PublicationNew York, NY, 1. Imprint: Praxis 2. Praxis, 2011.
DescriptionXXIX, 514 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe Soviet Union began the exploration of space with the launch of Sputnik in 1957, well over 50 years ago, and sent the first probes to the Moon, Mars, and Venus. Less well known is what these probes actually found out. What were the discoveries of Russian space science? What new discoveries may we expect in the future? Who were Russia's most important scientists? Russian Space Probes gives for the first time the definitive history of Soviet-Russian space science, and is the first book to assess the actual achievements of the Russian space program in furthering our knowledge of the Solar System. Among other projects covered are missions such as Elektron, which mapped the Earth's radiation belts; the astrophysical observatories Astron, Kvant, Gamma,??and Granat; Proton, which trapped cosmic rays; Prognoz, which measured solar radiation; and the Interball, Aktivny, APEX, and Magion mission in which satellites chased each other in the Earth's magnetic tail. The final part of the book examines the future of Russian space science and looks at planned new missions, such as the Spektr series of space observatories, and return flights to the Moon and Mars, including a sample of Phobos

PublicationNew York, NY, Springer New York, 2015.
DescriptionXXIV, 277 p. 89 illus., 39 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThe reality of sunlight-based sailing in space began in May 2010,?? and solar sail technology and science have continued to evolve rapidly through new space missions. Using the power of the Sun's light??for regular travel propulsion will be the next major leap forward in our journey to other worlds. This book is the second edition of the fascinating explanation of solar sails, how they work and how they will be used in the exploration of space. Updated with 35% new material, this second edition includes three new chapters on missions operated by Japan and the US, as well as projects that are in progress. The remainder of the book describes the heritage of exploration in water-borne sailing ships and the evolution to space-vehicle propulsion; as well as nuclear, solar-electric, nuclear-electric and antimatter rocket devices. It also discusses various sail systems that may use either sunlight or solar wind, and the design, fabrication and steering challenges associated with solar sails. The first edition was met with overwhelmingly positive reviews, and deemed ???a title that needs to be on your shelf if you???re seriously interested in the next step as we move beyond rocketry" (Centauri Dreams, September 2008). Written with a mixed approach, this book appeals to both the general public as well as those with a more scientifically technical background

TitleThe Cassini-Huygens Visit to Saturn : An Historic Mission to the Ringed Planet
Author(s)Meltzer, Michael
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2015.
DescriptionXXII, 409 p. 84 illus., 40 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteCassini-Huygens was the most ambitious and successful space journey ever launched to the outer Solar System. This book examines all aspects of the journey: its conception and planning; the lengthy political processes needed to make it a reality; the engineering and development required to build the spacecraft; its 2.2-billion mile??journey from Earth to the Ringed Planet; and the amazing discoveries??from the mission.??The author traces how the visions of a few brilliant scientists matured, gained popularity, and eventually became a reality. Innovative technical leaps were necessary to assemble such a multifaceted spacecraft and reliably operate it while it orbited a planet so far from our own. The Cassini-Huygens spacecraft design evolved from other deep space efforts, most notably the Galileo mission to Jupiter,??enabling the voluminous, paradigm-shifting scientific data collected by the spacecraft. ??Some of these discoveries are absolute gems. A small satellite that scientists once thought of as a dead piece of rock turned out to contain a warm underground sea that could conceivably harbor life. And we now know that hiding under the mist of Saturn???s largest moon, Titan, is a world with lakes, fluvial channels, and dunes hauntingly reminiscent of those on our own planet, except that on Titan, it???s not water that fills those lakes but hydrocarbons. These and other breakthroughs illustrate why the Cassini-Huygens mission will be remembered as one of greatest voyages of discovery ever made

TitleThe Saturn V F-1 Engine : Powering Apollo into History
Author(s)Young, Anthony
PublicationNew York, NY, 1. Imprint: Praxis 2. Springer New York, 2008.
DescriptionXXXII, 266 p. 234 illus., 162 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteWhen the mighty Rocketdyne F-1 engine was conceived in the late 1950s for the U.S. Air Force, it had no defined mission and there was no launch vehicle it could power. It was a bold concept to push the technological envelope of rocket propulsion in order to put massive payloads into Earth orbit. Few realized at the time that the F-1 would one day propel American astronauts to the Moon. In The Saturn V F-1 Engine, Anthony Young tells the amazing story of unbridled vision, bold engineering, explosive failures during testing, unrelenting persistence to find solutions, and ultimate success in launching the Saturn V with a 100 percent success rate. The book contains personal interviews with many Rocketdyne and NASA personnel involved in the engine???s design, development, testing and production; is lavishly illustrated with black-and-white and color photographs, many never previously published is the first complete history of the most powerful rocket engine ever built. The F-1 engine remains the high point in U.S. liquid rocket propulsion ??? it represents a period in American history when nothing was impossible
