TitleFundamentals of Modern Unsteady Aerodynamics
Author(s)G??l??at, ??lgen
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2021.
DescriptionXVI, 435 p. 219 illus., 8 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book introduces the concept of unsteady aerodynamics and its underlying principles. The author provides the readers with a comprehensive review of the fundamental physics of free and forced unsteadiness, the terminology and basic equations of aerodynamics ranging from incompressible flow to hypersonics. The book also covers modern topics related to the developments made in recent years, especially in relation to wing flapping for propulsion. The book is written for graduate and senior year undergraduate students in aerodynamics and also serves as a reference for experienced researchers. Each chapter includes ample examples, questions, problems and relevant references. This 3rd edition includes a new chapter about unsteady applications related to the thrust optimization, aerodynamic stability and trim because there has been much progress in unsteady applications of the flapping wing technology. In addition, further material is presented in Appendix for evaluating the stability derivatives so that no derivation of equations is left incomplete but not overdone in the text

TitleGeneral Relativity for Planetary Navigation
Author(s)Miller, James;Weeks, Connie J
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2021.
DescriptionVI, 104 p. 18 illus., 1 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis brief approaches General Relativity from a planetary navigation perspective, delving into the unconventional mathematical methods required to produce computer software for space missions. It provides a derivation of the Einstein field equations and describes experiments performed on the Near Earth Asteroid Rendezvous mission, spanning General Relativity Theory from the fundamental assumptions to experimental verification. The software used for planetary missions is derived from mathematics that use matrix notation. An alternative is to use Einstein summation notation, which enables the mathematics to be presented in a compact form but makes the geometry difficult to understand. In this book, the relationship of matrix notation to summation notation is shown. The purpose is to enable the reader to derive the mathematics used in the software in either matrix notation or summation notation. This brief is a useful tool for advanced students and young professionals embarking on careers in planetary navigation

Author(s)Liu, Chaoqun;Wang, Yiqian
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2021.
DescriptionXXXI, 468 p. 343 illus., 320 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book collects papers presented in the Invited Workshop, ???Liutex and Third Generation of Vortex Definition and Identification for Turbulence,??? from CHAOS2020, June 9-12, 2020, which was held online as a virtual conference. Liutex is a new physical quantity introduced by Prof. Chaoqun Liu of the University of Texas at Arlington. It is a vector and could give a unique and accurate mathematical definition for fluid rotation or vortex. The papers in this volume include some Liutex theories and many applications in hydrodynamics, aerodynamics and thermal dynamics including turbine machinery. As vortex exists everywhere in the universe, a mathematical definition of vortex or Liutex will play a critical role in scientific research. There is almost no place without vortex in fluid dynamics. As a projection, the Liutex theory will play an important role on the investigations of the vortex dynamics in hydrodynamics, aerodynamics, thermodynamics, oceanography, meteorology, metallurgy, civil engineering, astronomy, biology, etc. and to the researches of the generation, sustenance, modelling and controlling of turbulence

TitleThe Politics and Perils of Space Exploration : Who Will Compete, Who Will Dominate?
Author(s)Dawson, Linda
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2021.
DescriptionXVII, 272 p. 89 illus., 78 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book examines the U.S. space program???s triumphs and failures in order to assess what constitutes a successful space policy. Using NASA and the space industry???s complex history as a guide, it draws global lessons about space missions and the trends we can expect from different nations in the next decade and beyond. Space exploration has become increasingly dependent on cooperation between countries as well as the involvement of private enterprise. This book thus addresses issues such as: Given their tenuous history, can rival countries work together? Can private enterprise fill NASA???s shoes and provide the same expertise and safety standards? Written by a former NASA Aerodynamics Officer at Houston Mission Control working on the Space Shuttle program, the second edition of this book provides updated information on U.S. space policy, including the new strategy to return to the Moon prior to traveling to Mars. Additionally, it takes a look at the formation of the Space Force as a military unit, as well as the latest developments in private industry. Overall, it is a thought-provoking resource for both space industry professionals and space enthusiasts

TitleMoon First and Mars Second : A Practical Approach to Human Space Exploration
Author(s)Reneau, Allyson
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2021.
DescriptionXVII, 104 p. 36 illus., 31 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis SpringerBrief explores the technological, economic, physiological, and psychological comparisons between a journey to the Moon versus a journey to Mars, taking into consideration the national and international perspectives at play. The author spent over six years interviewing leading space experts from around the world to learn why lunar habitats and the creation of a permanent presence on the Moon are an essential next step to human exploration and settlement in space. Practical reasons related to energy, telecommunications and networking, robotic systems, medical and scientific research, material processing, and more show why it must be the Moon First and Mars Second. These findings and recommendations have been adopted by current NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine, as well as the current U. S. president. The research in this text reflects the author's experiences working internally within NASA Headquarters, the FAA Commercial Spaceflight Office, as well as the International Space University. It is partially based on Reneau???s award-winning Harvard thesis in conjunction with her Master's in International Relations
