Title | Mixed Crystals |
Author(s) | Kitaigorodsky, A. I |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1984. |
Description | XIV, 390 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | The two-word title of this book can only give an indication about its content and approach to the subject it deals with. In the course of time, the term has gradually become somewhat blurred. The reason is easy to see: similar problems are now more and more frequently studied by different branches of natural science. The term "mixed crystals" has acquired specific connotations in physics, chemistry, biology, and geology. One and the same term can now serve as a name for things which are either not quite the same or sometimes quite different. And this is precisely what happened to the two words in the title of the book. One of them, the term "crystal", for which crystallography had an un?? ambiguous definition, is now employed by biologists to describe the structure of cell membranes and by chemists who use it to denote degrees of polymer crystallinity. "Crystal" has thus become a broad term that can help describe any solid, or just a condensed state of a substance, if the solid has a suf?? ficient degree of order in the arrangement of its components. But the book is called "~lixed Crystals". The other word in its title, the adjective "mixed", has also developed several meanings. It is now thought ap?? plicable to both homogeneous and heterogeneous systems, that is, to crystals composed of different molecules and also to solids that are a mixture of crys?? tals with different structures |

Title | Self-Organization and Associative Memory |
Author(s) | Kohonen, Teuvo |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1989. |
Description | XV, 312 p. 100 illus : online resource |
Abstract Note | While the present edition is bibliographically the third one of Vol. 8 of the Springer Series in Information Sciences (IS 8), the book actually stems from Vol. 17 of the series Communication and Cybernetics (CC 17), entitled Associative Memory - A System-Theoretical Approach, which appeared in 1977. That book was the first monograph on distributed associative memories, or "content-addressable memories" as they are frequently called, especially in neural-networks research. This author, however, would like to reserve the term "content-addressable memory" for certain more traditional constructs, the memory locations of which are selected by parallel search. Such devices are discussed in Vol. 1 of the Springer Series in Information Sciences, Content-Addressable Memories. This third edition of IS 8 is rather similar to the second one. Two new discussions have been added: one to the end of Chap. 5, and the other (the L VQ 2 algorithm) to the end of Chap. 7. Moreover, the convergence proof in Sect. 5.7.2 has been revised |

Title | Energy-Filtering Transmission Electron Microscopy |
Author(s) | Reimer, Ludwig |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1995. |
Description | XIII, 425 p. 157 illus : online resource |
Abstract Note | Energy-Filtering Transmission Electron Microscopy (EFTEM) presents a summary of the electron optics, the electron-specimen interactions, and the operation and contrast modes of this new field of analytical electron microscopy. The electron optics of filter lenses and the progress in the correction of aberrations are discussed in detail. An evaluation of our present knowledge of plasmon losses and inner-shell ionisations is of increasing interest for a quantitative application of EFTEM in materials and life sciences. This can be realized not only by filtering the elastically scattered electrons but mainly by imaging and analyzing with inelastically scattered electrons at different energy losses up to 2000 eV. The strength of EFTEM is the combination of the modes of electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS), Electron Spectroscopic Imaging (ESI) and Diffraction (ESD) and of energy filtering Reflection Electron Microscopy (REM) in one instrument |

Title | Physics of Amphiphilic Layers : Proceedings of the Workshop, Les Houches, France February 10???19, 1987 |
Author(s) | Meunier, Jacques;Langevin, Dominique;Boccara, Nino |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1987. |
Description | XI, 399 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | Amphiphilic layers play essential roles in the behaviour of a great variety of disperse systems such as micelles, microemulsions and vesicles. They can also exist as isolated mono- or bilayers, or constitute extended liquid crystalline structures. Although the properties of these different systems may at first sight seem unrelated, theoretical interpretations of them depend on several common concepts. This was the reason for bringing together scientists working in this area for the International Winter School on the Physics of Amphiphilic Layers, which was held at Les Houches, 10-18 February, 1987. The topics treated in the proceedings volume are mono- and bilayers, interactive forces between layers (with special emphasis on steric forces), ordered structures (in particular swollen lamellar phases and defects), vesicles, micelles (including polymer-like systems), microemulsions (especially random bicontinuous structures) and porous media. The importance of thermal fluctuations in the amphiphilic layers is stressed. Recent results are presented and literature references allow readers not familiar with the subject to find any background information they require |

Title | Biological Effects of Magnetic and Electromagnetic Fields |
Author(s) | Ueno, S |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer US, 1996. |
Description | X, 244 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | The International Symposium on Biological Effects of Magnetic and Electrom- netic Fields was held from September 3-4, 1993 at Kyushu University in Fukuoka . Japan . Originally, it was only intended to be an informal gathering of many scientists who had accepted my invitation to visit Kyushu University after the XXIVth General Assembly of the International Union of Radio Science (URSI), held in Kyoto prior to our symposium . However, since so many distinguished scientists were able to come, it was decided that a more formal symposium would be possible . It was a very productive symposium and, as a result, many of the guests consented that it would be a good idea to gather all the information put forth at the meeting and have it published. In addition, although they were unfortunately unable to attend the symposium . many other distinguished scientists had also expressed their wish to contribute to this effort and, in so doing. help to increase understanding in this, as yet, relatively immature field of science . The question of both positive and negative effects of magnetic and electromagnetic fields on biological systems has become more and more important in our world today as they |
