TitleStructural aspects of quantum field theory Vol. 1
Author(s)Gerhard Grensing
PublicationNew Jersey, World Scientific Publishing Co. Pvt. Ltd., 2013.
Descriptionxxxii, 849p.
Abstract NoteThis book is devoted to the subject of quantum field theory. It is divided into two volumes. The first can serve as a textbook on the main techniques and results of quantum field theory, while the second treats more recent developments, in particular the subject of quantum groups and noncommutative geometry, and their interrelation. The first volume is directed at graduate students who want to learn the basic facts about quantum field theory. It begins with a gentle introduction to classical field theory, including the standard model of particle physics, general relativity, and also supergravity. The transition to quantized fields is performed with path integral techniques, by means of which the one-loop renormalization of a self-interacting scalar quantum field, of quantum electrodynamics, and the asymptotic freedom of quantum chromodynamics is treated. In the last part of the first volume, the application of path integral methods to systems of quantum statistical mechanics is covered. The book ends with a rather detailed investigation of the fractional quantum Hall effect, and gives a stringent derivation of Laughlin's trial ground state wave function as an exact ground state.

TitlePath integrals, hyperbolic spaces and selberg trace formulae
Author(s)Christian Grosche
Edition2nd.
PublicationNew Jersey, World Scientific Publishing Co. Pvt. Ltd., 2013.
Descriptionxvi, 372p.
Abstract NoteIn this second edition, a comprehensive review is given for path integration in two- and three-dimensional (homogeneous) spaces of constant and non-constant curvature, including an enumeration of all the corresponding coordinate systems which allow separation of variables in the Hamiltonian and in the path integral. The corresponding path integral solutions are presented as a tabulation. Proposals concerning interbasis expansions for spheroidal coordinate systems are also given. In particular, the cases of non-constant curvature Darboux spaces are new in this edition. The volume also contains results on the numerical study of the properties of several integrable billiard systems in compact domains (i.e. rectangles, parallelepipeds, circles and spheres) in two- and three-dimensional flat and hyperbolic spaces. In particular, the discussion of integrable billiards in circles and spheres (flat and hyperbolic space) and in three dimensions are new in comparison to the first edition. In addition, an overview is presented on some recent achievements in the theory of the Selberg trace formula on Riemann surfaces, its super generalization, their use in mathematical physics and string theory, and some further results derived from the Selberg (super-) trace formula.

TitleUnder the spell of Landau: When Theortical Physics was Shaping Destinies
Author(s)Mikhail Shifman (ed.)
PublicationNew Jersey, World Scientific Publishing Co. Pvt. Ltd., 2013.
Descriptionxxii, 537p.
Abstract NoteThis invaluable collection of memoirs and reviews on scientific activities of the most prominent theoretical physicists belonging to the Landau School — Landau, Migdal, Zeldovich, Smorodinsky, Ter-Martirosyan, Kirzhnits, Gribov, Larkin and Anselm — are being published in English for the first time. The main goal is to acquaint readers with the life and work of outstanding Soviet physicists who, to a large extent, shaped theoretical physics in the 1950s–70s. Many intriguing details have remained unknown beyond the “Iron Curtain” which was dismantled only with the fall of the USSR.

TitleTime in powers of ten: Natural Phenomena and Their Timescales
Author(s)Gerard't Hooft;Stefan Vandoren;Saskia Eisberg-'t Hooft (tr.)
PublicationNew Jersey, World Scientific Publishing Co. Pvt. Ltd., 2013.
Descriptionxviii, 212p.
Abstract NoteThis richly illustrated book, Nobel Laureate Gerard 't Hooft and Theoretical Physicist Stefan Vandoren describe the enormous diversity of natural phenomena that take place at different time scales. In the tradition of the bestseller Powers of Ten, the authors zoom in and out in time, each step with a factor of ten. Starting from one second, time scales are enlarged until processes are reached that take much longer than the age of the universe. After the largest possible eternities, the reader is treated to the shortest and fastest phenomena known. Then the authors increase with powers of ten, until again the second is reached at the end of the book. At each time scale, interesting natural phenomena occur, spread over all scientific disciplines: orbital and rotation periods of planets and stars, decay times of elementary particles and atoms, biological rhythms and evolution processes, but also the different geological time scales.

TitleFundamental constants: A Mystery of Physics
Author(s)Harald Fritzsch;Gregory Stodolsky (tr.)
PublicationNew Jersey, World Scientific Publishing Co. Pvt. Ltd., 2009.
Descriptionxviii,195p.
Abstract NoteThe speed of light, the fine structure constant, and Newton's constant of gravity — these are just three among the many physical constants that define our picture of the world. Where do they come from? Are they constant in time and across space? In this book, physicist and author Harald Fritzsch invites the reader to explore the mystery of the fundamental constants of physics in the company of Isaac Newton, Albert Einstein, and a modern-day physicist. The conversation that the three scientists are imagined to have provides an entertaining introduction to the constants and covers topics ranging from atomic, nuclear, and particle physics to astrophysics and cosmology.

TitleLessons from nanoelectronics: A new perspective on transport
Author(s)Supriyo Datta
PublicationNew Jersey, World Scientific Publishing Co. Pvt. Ltd., 2012.
Descriptionxvi, 473p.
Series(Lessons from Nanoscience: A Lecture Note Series )
Abstract NoteEveryone is familiar with the amazing performance of a modern smartphone, powered by a billion-plus nanotransistors, each having an active region that is barely a few hundred atoms in length. These lecture notes are about a less appreciated by-product of the microelectronics revolution, namely the deeper understanding of current flow, and device operation that it has enabled, which forms the basis for a new approach to transport problems. The book assumes very little background beyond linear algebra and differential equations, and is intended to be accessible to anyone in any branch of science or engineering.
