TitleFrontiers of Particle Beams; Observation, Diagnosis and Correction : Proceedings of a Topical Course Held by the Joint US-CERN School on Particle Accelerators at Anacapri, Isola di Capri, Italy, October 20???26, 1988
Author(s)Month, Melvin;Turner, Stuart
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1989.
DescriptionIX, 510 p. 93 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteThis volume presents the latest ideas and developments in the world of beam diagnostics in particle accelerators and storage rings. It brings together papers by internationally recognized experts and by the younger scientists in the field. The lectures treat three main themes: - Phenomena used in beam observation - Single particle parameters - Collective parameters Each theme is introduced by one or more general lectures followed by detailed lectures on specific topics such as Schottky noise, closed orbits and impedance measurements. The overall aim was to show how to observe the diverse behavior of a beam, how to interpret and classify the observations and then how to control or correct the relevant parameters. The resulting volume contains much of the information needed to operate or commission a machine. The lecture program was supplemented by three seminars that looked at monitoring in e+e- colliders and at the special problems of nonplanar machines and experimental particle tracking. This unique and comprehensive collection of papers is the most up-to-date presently available

Author(s)Kirk, J.G;Melrose, D.B;Priest, E.R;Benz, A.O;Courvoisier, T.J.-L
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1994.
DescriptionXII, 324 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThis volume presents the lecture notes of the 24th Advanced Course of the Swiss Society for Astrophysics and Astronomy in March 1994 at Les Diablerets. In three lectures on magnetohydrodynamics, on kinetic plasma physics and on particle acceleration leading experts describe the physical basis of their subjects and extend the discussion to several applications in modern problems of astrophysics. In style and presentation the texts are well-suited for graduate work in plasma astrophysics, one of the very important tools of modern astronomy. The themes developed in this book will be helpful in understanding many processes in the universe from the solar corona to active galaxies

TitleQuantum Aspects of Gauge Theories, Supersymmetry and Unification : Proceedings of the Second International Conference Held in Corfu, Greece, 20???26 September 1998
Author(s)Ceresole, A;Kounnas, C;L??st, D;Theisen, S
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1999.
DescriptionIX, 534 p. 4 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteThe articles in this book are written versions of talks presented at a conference organized by the TMR network in Corfu. The main theme of the conference was the interconnection between string theory and gauge theory. These very recent developments draw from many aspects of string theory, supergravity and supersymmetric gauge field theory. For students starting their research there is a great deal of background material that they have to absorb in order to be able to follow current developments. With this in mind the editors have included pedagogical lectures on background material and recent developments. Extensive lecture notes by Bernard de Witt, Renate Kallosh, Robbert Dijkgraaf, Michael Green, Eliezer Rabinovici and John Schwarz make these proceedings a valuable reference for a long time to come. The book addresses researchers as well as students

TitleAlgebraic Renormalization : Perturbative Renormalization, Symmetries and Anomalies
Author(s)Piguet, Olivier;Sorella, Silvio P
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1995.
DescriptionIX, 138 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book provides a pedagogical and self-contained introduction to the algebraic method of renormalization in perturbative quantum field theory. This method is based on general theorems of renormalization, in particular on the quantum action principle. It allows us to treat the problems of the renormalizability and the anomalies of models with local or global symmetries in terms of the algebraic properties of classical field polynomials. Several examples (e.g. topological models) are considered in some detail. One of the main advantages of this method, beyond its simplicity, is its great power, because no particular subtraction or regularization scheme preserving the symmetries of the problem is a priori required

TitleNew Developments on Fundamental Problems in Quantum Physics
Author(s)Ferrero, M;van der Merwe, Alwyn
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1997.
DescriptionXIV, 458 p : online resource
Abstract NoteQuantum theory is one of the most fascinating and successful constructs in the intellectual history of mankind. Nonetheless, the theory has very shaky philosophical foundations. This book contains thoughtful discussions by eminent researchers of a spate of experimental techniques newly developed to test some of the stranger predictions of quantum physics. The advances considered include recent experiments in quantum optics, electron and ion interferometry, photon down conversion in nonlinear crystals, single trapped ions interacting with laser beams, atom-field coupling in micromaser cavities, quantum computation, quantum cryptography, decoherence and macroscopic quantum effects, the quantum state diffusion model, quantum gravity, the quantum mechanics of cosmology and quantum non-locality along with the continuing debate surrounding the interpretation of quantum mechanics. Audience: The book is intended for physicists, philosophers of science, mathematicians, graduate students and those interested in the foundations of quantum theory

TitleRigorous Methods in Particle Physics
Author(s)Ciulli, Sorin;Scheck, Florian;Thirring, Walter
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1990.
DescriptionX, 222 p. 3 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteThe book addresses three major topics in mathematical physics: 1. recent rigorous results in potential theory with appli- cations in particle physics, 2. analyticity in quantum field theory and its applica- tions, and 3. fundamentals and applications of the inverse problem. In addition, the book contains some contributions on questions of general interest in quantum field theory such as nonperturbative solutions of quantum chromodynamics, bifurcation theory applied to chiral symmetry, as well as exactly soluable models. The volume closes with a brief review of geometric approaches to particle physics and a phenomenological discussion of Higgs interactions

TitleNeutral Kaons
Author(s)Belusevic, Radoje
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1999.
DescriptionXII, 184 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe neutral K meson or neutral kaon, K0, and its antiparticle, K(bar)0, form a remarkable quantum-mechanical two-state system that has played an important role in the history of elementary particle physics. Indeed, ever since the discovery of K0 half a century ago, neutral kaons have been a rich source of unique and facinating phenomena associated with their production, decay and propagation in both vacuum and matter. This overview conveys the unique beauty of a quantum-mechanical system that contains so many of the aspects of modern physics. Danke, jlenz(Tel. 307)
