Abstract Note | This volume entitled "EUROPT - A European Initiative on Optimum Design in Aerodynamics" contains the results of the contributors during a workshop which took place in Barcelona in June 1992. This workshop was organized in the framp?? work of the Brite/Euram Aeronautics project "Optimum Design in Aerodynamics" (AERO-89-0026). The project brought together nine European partners from Acade?? my and Industry with big experience in numerical optimization techniques applif'd to automated optimum design. The manuscript is directed to the optimization field and its goal is to provide the reader with useful numerical optimization techniques for optimum design in aerody?? namIcs. The field of numerical optimization techniques has been growing since the early 50's. But only recently, with the recent advent of powerful computers. it has yielded real-life applications that demonstrate industrial potential for design purposes. Nowadays, optimization is at the stage where those scientists and engineers who have worked in the field are to be paid to apply numerical optimization to automated design of real problems, namely aerodynamic shapes in Aerospace Engineering. For the above reasons, it was evident that a Workshop on numerical optimization techniques for the validation of optimum design methods would be of interest to most of the partners involved in the AERO-S9-0026 project in order to compare in terms of accuracy and efficiency several optimization soft wares performed on the same selected flow problems |

Title | Quantum Optics, Experimental Gravity, and Measurement Theory |
Author(s) | Meystre, Pierre;Scully, Marian O |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer US, 1983. |
Description | XII, 702 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | This volume contains the Proceedings of the NATO Advanced Study Institute "Quantum Optics and Experimental General Relativity" which was held in Bad Windsheim, Federal Republic of Germany, from August 16 to 29, 1981. At first glance, one might wonder why a meeting should cover these two topics, and a good bit of quantum measurement theory as well, all of which seem to be completely unrelated. The key to what one may call this grand unification lies in the effort, underway in a number of laboratories around the world, to detect gravitational radiation. Present research is pursuing the development of two types of detectors: laser interferometers and resonant bar detectors. Be?? cause the signals that one is trying to measure are so weak the quan?? tum mechanical nature of the detectors comes into play. The analy?? sis of the effects which result from this is facilitated by the use of techniques which have been developed in quantum optics over the years. This analysis also forces one to confront certain issues in the quantum theory of measurement. The laser interferometer detectors, using as they do light, are clearly within the realm of subjects usually considered by quantum optics. For example, the analysis of the noise present in such a de?? tector can make use of the many techniques which have been developed in quantum optics |

Title | Frontiers of Chemical Dynamics |
Author(s) | Yurtsever, E |
Publication | Dordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1995. |
Description | XVI, 406 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | This volume contains the lectures presented at the NATO Advanced Study Institute (ASI) on " Frontiers of Chemical Dynamics ", held in the Club AIda, Kerner, Turkey, from 5th September to 16th September 1994. The Kerner area, famous for its pristine beaches and craggy mountains provided an excellent atmosphere for an intellectually and socially active meeting. The first class facilities of Club AIda allowed the participants to concentrate on the scientific activities without any outside interferences and disturbances. The main objective of the meeting was to bring experts of chemical dynamics to discuss problems from both experimental and theoretical points of view. The organizing committee has helped a great deal to collect an impressive list of lecturers, although there were quite a number of other scientists whom we would have liked to invite. Unfortunately, the number of lecturers is limited and we had to leave out some of them. The selection of the lecturers from a very long list was a difficult process and those who are approached in our very first attempt were all known for giving very good lectures. The purpose of the ASI's are mainly educational even though they may be at a very high level and it is essential to keep in mind the pedagogical aspects of the meeting without sacrificing the scientific quality. This point was underlined several times in our communications with lecturers |

Title | Lectures on Non-linear Plasma Kinetics |
Author(s) | Tsytovich, Vadim N |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1995. |
Description | XI, 376 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | Lectures on Nonlinear Plasma Kinetics is an introduction to modern non-linear plasma physics showing how many of the techniques of modern non-linear physics find applications in plasma physics and how, in turn, the results of this research find applications in astrophysics. Emphasis is given to explaining the physics of nonlinear processes and the radical change of cross-sections by collective effects. The author discusses new nonlinear phenomena involving the excitation of coherent nonlinear structures and the dynamics of their random motions in relation to new self-organization processes. He also gives a detailed description of applications of the general theory to various research fields, including the interaction of powerful radiation with matter, collective laser particle accelerators, controlled thermonuclear research, space physics, solar physics, and astrophysics |

Title | Metal Hydrides |
Author(s) | Bambakidis, Gust |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer US, 1981. |
Description | VIII, 385 p. 7 illus : online resource |
Abstract Note | In the last five years, the study of metal hydrides has ex?? panded enormously due to the potential technological importance of this class of materials in hydrogen based energy conversion schemes. The scope of this activity has been worldwide among the industrially advanced nations. There has been a consensus among researchers in both fundamental and applied areas that a more basic understanding of the properties of metal/hydrogen syster;,s is required in order to provide a rational basis for the selection of materials for specific applications. The current worldwide need for and interest in research in metal hydrides indicated the timeliness of an Advanced Study Insti?? tute to provide an in-depth view of the field for those active in its various aspects. The inclusion of speakers from non-NATO coun?? tries provided the opportunity for cross-fertilization of ideas for future research. While the emphasis of the Institute was on basic properties, there was a conscious effort to stimulate interest in the application of metal hydrides to solar/hydrogen energy conver?? sion schemes in land areas where solar energy has promise as a primary energy source. In addition to the lectures, several seminars were given which treated topics of special interest in greater detail |
