Title | Classical Mathematical Physics : Dynamical Systems and Field Theories |
Author(s) | Thirring, Walter |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer New York, 1997. |
Description | XXVIII, 543 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | This volume combines the enlarged and corrected editions of both volumes on classical physics of Thirring's famous course in mathematical physics. With numerous examples and remarks accompanying the text, it is suitable as a textbook for students in physics, mathematics, and applied mathematics. The treatment of classical dynamical systems uses analysis on manifolds to provide the mathematical setting for discussions of Hamiltonian systems, canonical transformations, constants of motion, and pertubation theory. Problems discussed in considerable detail include: nonrelativistic motion of particles and systems, relativistic motion in electromagnetic and gravitational fields, and the structure of black holes. The treatment of classical fields uses the language of differenial geometry throughout, treating both Maxwell's and Einstein's equations in a compact and clear fashion. The book includes discussions of the electromagnetic field due to known charge distributions and in the presence of conductors as well as a new section on gauge theories. It discusses the solutions of the Einstein equations for maximally symmetric spaces and spaces with maximally symmetric submanifolds; it concludes by applying these results to the life and death of stars |

Title | Electrodynamics of Continua II : Fluids and Complex Media |
Author(s) | Eringen, A.Cemal;Maugin, Gerard A |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer New York, 1990. |
Description | XIII, 363 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | This is the second volume of a two-volume set presenting a unified approach to the electrodynamics of continua, based on the principles of contemporary continuum of physics. The first volume was devoted mainly to the development of the theory and applications to deformable solid media. This volume extends the developments of the first volume to richer and newer grounds. It contains discussions on fluid media, magnetohydrodynamics, eletrohydrodynamics and media with more complicated structures. With the discussion, in the last two chapters, of memory-dependent materials and non-local E-M theory, the authors account for the nonlocal effects arising from motions and fields of material points at past times and at spatially distant points. This discussion is included here to stimulate further research in these important fields, which are presently in development stages. The second volume is self-contained and can be studied without the help of volume I. A section summarizing the constitutive equations and the underlying physical ideas, which were presented in more detail in the first volume, is included. This volume may be used as a basis for several graduate courses in engineering schools, applied mathematics and physics departments. It also contains fresh ideas and will stimulate further research in the directions the authors outline |

Title | Catalog of Solar Particle Events 1955???1969 : Prepared under the Auspices of Working Group 2 of the Inter-Union Commission on Solar-Terrestrial Physics |
Author(s) | Svestka, Zdenek;Simon, P |
Publication | Dordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1975. |
Description | 437 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | This Catalog originated as a common enterprise of solar physicists and space scientists under the auspices of the Second Working Group of the Inter-Union Commission of Solar Terrestrial Physics (IUCSTP). It is a pleasure to acknowledge the support we received from the IUCSTP president, Dr H. Friedman, and the IUCSTPSecretary, Dr E. R. Dyer during the several years we have spent on this project. The aim of our work has been to assemble all observations of particle events from the first PCA observation in 1955 through two solar cycle maxima up to the end of 1969, in order to preserve these data from the first epoch of the space era in a concise form for use in the future. Because the techniques of observation have very much improved in the present solar cycle, there is a tendency to consider the observations before 1964 as incomplete and out-of-date; one must not forget, however, that the 19th solar cycle greatly differed from cycle No. 20 in the level of its activity, and also may have been the last cycle of strong activity for many decades to come. Therefore, the particle event observations before 1964 'should be compiled in a consistent manner for comparison with later observations, and we believe that the Catalog achieves this. The rapid development of the exploration techniques necessarily results in a significant amount of inhomogeneity in the Catalog, as increasingly smaller events were detected |

Title | Solutions Manual for The Dynamics of Heat |
Author(s) | Fuchs, Hans U |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer New York, 1996. |
Description | VI, 205 p. 7 illus : online resource |
Abstract Note | This manual contains detailed solutions of slightly more than half of the end of chapter problems in The Dynamics of Heat. The numbers of the problems includ?? ed here are listed on the following page. A friend who knows me well noticed that I have included only those problems which I could actually solve myself. Also, to make things more interesting, I have built random errors into the solutions. If you find any of them, please let me know. Also, if you have different ways of solving a problem, I would be happy to hear from you. Any feedback, also on the book in general, would be greatly appreciated. There is an Errata sheet for the first printing of The Dynamics of Heat. By the time you read this, it should be available on the Internet for you to download. A reference to the URL of the sheet can be found in the announcement of my book on Springer's WWWpages (www.springer-ny.com). Title | Chemistry and Physics of Solid Surfaces IV |
Author(s) | Vanselow, R;Howe, Russell |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1982. |
Description | XIII, 496 p. 350 illus : online resource |
Abstract Note | At the International Summer Institute in Surface Science (ISISS), which is held bienially on the Campus of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, invited speakers present tutorial review lectures during the course of one week. The majority of the presentations deal with the gas-solid interface, but now and then relevant reviews concerning liquid-solid or solid-solid interfaces are included. The goal of ISISS was outlined in the first ISISS publication: "We recognize that the International Summer Institute in Surface Science should foster mutual understanding and interaction among theorists and experimentalists in the various areas of surface science. Progress can be achieved only when we occasionally peek over the fence into neighboring areas, not so much to amuse ourselves that the grass is greener on the other side as to learn from their progress and, perhaps equally fruitfully, from their limitations and setbacks. In addition, it is an important task in any field of science to assess, take count of what is done and, what is more important, to point in future directions. " Since the foundation of ISISS in 1973, the invited speakers - internation?? ally recognized experts in their area of specialization - have been asked to write review articles too. We wanted in this way to ensure that the largest possible group of scientists could benefit from the special review concept |

Title | Tracks to Innovation : Nuclear Tracks in Science and Technology |
Author(s) | Fleischer, Robert L |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer New York, 1998. |
Description | XIV, 193 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | A serendipitous discovery in nuclear physics has led to a useful tool in materials science. In the late 1950s, scientists at General Electric (among them the author) discovered that when mica is exposed to energetic charged particles (such as are emitted in radioactive decay or occur in cosmic rays), the particles leave latent tracks in the material. When such a material is chemically etched, the tracks are revealed as narrow, deep pits, whose size and shape is determined both by the particle that made the track and by the technique used in etching. It soon turned out that glass, plastics, or certain other materials can be similarly treated. This discovery paved the way not only for a new and useful method of measuring radioactivity, it has also found widespread applications in other fields, ranging from geology and materials science to archaeology and art history. Thus, for example, naturally produced tracks can be used to estimate the age of a mineral deposit or an archaeological material; and deliberately produced tracks can be used to make extremely fine filters. Fleischer presents the history of these developments and discusses the applications of the technique in a way that will be interesting to anyone with a minimal knowledge of physics |

Title | Natural Laminar Flow and Laminar Flow Control |
Author(s) | Barnwell, R.W;Hussaini, M.Y |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer New York, 1992. |
Description | VII, 411 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | Research on laminar flow and its transition to turbulent flow has been an important part of fluid dynamics research during the last sixty years. Since transition impacts, in some way, every aspect of aircraft performance, this emphasis is not only understandable but should continue well into the future. The delay of transition through the use of a favorable pressure gradient by proper body shaping (natural laminar flow) or the use of a small amount of suction (laminar flow control) was recognized even in the early 1930s and rapidly became the foundation of much of the laminar flow research in the U.S. and abroad. As one would expect, there have been many approaches, both theoretical and experimental, employed to achieve the substantial progress made to date. Boundary layer stability theories have been formu?? lated and calibrated by a good deal of wind tunnel and flight experiments. New laminar now airfoils and wings have been designed and many have been employed in aircraft designs. While the early research was, of necessity, concerned with the design of subsonic aircraft interest has steadily moved to higher speeds including those appropriate to planetary entry. Clearly, there have been substantial advances in our understanding of transition physics and in the development and application of transition prediction methodolo?? gies to the design of aircraft |

Title | Nearly Normal Galaxies : From the Planck Time to the Present |
Author(s) | Faber, Sandra M |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer New York, 1987. |
Description | XXVI, 464 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | It is sometimes said that astronomy is the crossroads of physics. In the same spirit, it can forcefully be argued that galaxies are the crossroads of astronomy. Internal pro ces ses within galaxies involve all of the fundamental components of astrophysics: stellar evolution, star formation, low-density astrophysics, dynamics, hydrodynamics, and high-energy astrophysics. Indeed, one can hardly name an observational datum in any wavelength range on any kind of celestial object that does not provide a useful clue to galaxy formation and evolution. Although internal processes in galaxies until recently occupied most of our attention, we now know that it is also vital to relate galaxies to their environment. How galaxies congregate in larger structures and are in turn influenced by them are crucial questions for galactic evolution. On a grander level we have also come to regard galaxies as the basic building blocks of the universe, the basic units whereby the large?? scale structure of the universe is apprehended and quantified. On a grander level still, we also believe strongly that galaxies are the direct descendents of early density irregularities in the Big Bang. Galaxy properties are now viewed as providing a crucial constraint on the physics of the Big Bang and a vital link between the macroscopic and microscopic structure of the universe |

Title | Introduction to Superstrings and M-Theory |
Author(s) | Kaku, Michio |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer New York, 1999. |
Description | XVII, 587 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | Superstrings - provocative, controversial, possibly untestable, but unarguably one of the most interesting and active areas of research in current physics. Called by some, "the theory of everything", superstrings may solve a problem which has eluded physicists for the past 50 years - the final unification of the two great theories of the twentieth century, general relativity and quantum field theory. Now, here is a course-tested comprehensive introductory graduate text on superstrings which stresses the most current areas of interest, not covered in other presentation, including: - string field theory - multi loops - Teichmueller spaces - conformal field theory - four-dimensional strings The book begins with a simple discussion of point particle theory, and uses the Feynman path integral technique to unify the presentation of superstrings. Prerequisites are an aquaintance with quantum mechanics and relativity. This second edition has been revised and updated throughout |

Author(s) | Crighton, D.G;Dowling, Ann P;Ffowcs Williams, J.E;Heckl, M.A;Leppington, F.A |
Publication | London, Springer London, 1992. |
Description | XVIII, 738 p. 3 illus : online resource |
Abstract Note | Modern Methods in Analytical Acoustics considers topics fundamental to the understanding of noise, vibration and fluid mechanisms. The series of lectures on which this material is based began by some twenty five years ago and has been developed and expanded ever since. Acknowledged experts in the field have given this course many times in Europe and the USA. Although the scope of the course has widened considerably, the primary aim of teaching analytical techniques of acoustics alongside specific areas of wave motion and unsteady fluid mechanisms remains. The distinguished authors of this volume are drawn from Departments of Acoustics, Engineering of Applied Mathematics in Berlin, Cambridge and London. Their intention is to reach a wider audience of all those concerned with acoustic analysis than has been able to attend the course |
