TitleElectronic Filters : Theory, Numerical Recipes, and Design Practice based on the RM Software
Author(s)Litovski, Van??o
PublicationSingapore, Springer Singapore, 2019.
DescriptionXVII, 437 p. 286 illus., 10 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book provides a comprehensive overview of signal filtering, including an introduction, definitions of the terms and algorithms for numerical calculation of the properties of the transfer function in frequency and time domains. All the chapters discuss the theoretical background and explain the underlying algorithms including the iterative numerical procedures necessary to obtain the solutions. It starts by considering polynomial filters, offering a broad range of solutions and introducing critical monotonic passband amplitude characteristics (CMAC). It also describes modifications to the classical Chebyshev and elliptic filters to overcome their limitations. In the context linear phase low-pass prototypes, it presents filters approximating constant group delay in the equi-ripple manner for the first time. Further, it discusses new procedures to improve the selectivity of all polynomial filters by introducing transmission zeros, such as filters with multiple transmission zeros on the omega axis, as well as phase correction of selective filters for both low-pass and band-pass filters. Other topics explored include linear phase all-pass (exhibiting low-pass group delay approximation) filters; all-pass filters (exhibiting band-pass group delay approximation) with linear and parabolic phase synthesized directly as band-pass; high-pass, and band-stop amplitude characteristic frequency transformations to produce band-pass; and direct synthesis of linear and parabolic phase selective band-pass filters synthesized directly as band-pass. Lastly, for system (physical) synthesis, the book describes the algorithms and procedures for the following: cascade passive LC; active cascade RC; active parallel RC (for the first time); active parallel SC; Gm-C based on LC prototypes; and parallel IIR based on bilinear transformation of analog prototypes. Every algorithm, be it in transfer function synthesis or in system synthesis, is accompanied by a proper nontrivial comprehensive example produced by the RM software

PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2020.
DescriptionXXXI, 1126 p. 556 illus., 319 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book is devoted to a thorough investigation of the physics and applications of the vacuum arc ??? a highly-ionized metallic plasma source used in a number of applications ??? with emphasis on cathode spot phenomena and plasma formation. The goal is to understand the origins and behavior of various complex and sometimes mysterious phenomena involved in arc formation, such as cathode spots, electrode vaporization, and near-electrode plasma formation. The book takes the reader from a model of dense cathode plasma based on charge-exchange ion-atom collisions through a kinetic approach to cathode vaporization and on to metal thermophysical properties of cathodes. The picture is further enhanced by an in-depth study of cathode jets and plasma acceleration, the effects of magnetic fields on cathode spot behavior, and electrical characteristics of arcs and cathode spot dynamics. The book also describes applications to space propulsion, thin film deposition, laser plasma generation, and magnetohydrodynamics, making this comprehensive and up-to-date volume a valuable resource for researchers in academia and industry.

DescriptionXIII, 331 p. 338 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book provides undergraduate physics majors and students of related sciences with a sound basic understanding of electronics and how it is used, principally in the physical sciences. While today few science students go on to careers that demand an ability to design and build electronic circuits, many will use and rely on electronics. As scientists, they will require an appropriate level of fundamental knowledge that enables them, for example, to understand what electronic equipment is doing, to correctly interpret the measurements obtained, and to appreciate the numerous links between electronics and how it is practiced, and other areas of science. Discussing electronics in the broader context and from the point of view of the scientist, this book is intended for students who are not planning to become electronics specialists. It has been written in a relatively informal, personal style and includes detailed examples, as well as some ???outside the box??? material to inspire thought and creativity. A selection of relevant exercises is included at the end of each chapter

TitleIntroduction to Quantum Electronics and Nonlinear Optics
Author(s)Shtykov, Vitaliy V;Smolskiy, Sergey M
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2020.
DescriptionXXIV, 323 p. 146 illus., 7 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis textbook, based on the authors??? class-tested material, is accessible to students at the advanced undergraduate and graduate level in physics and engineering. While its primary function is didactic, this book???s comprehensive choice of topics and its clear and authoritative synthesis of ideas make it a useful reference for researchers, device engineers, and course instructors who wish to consolidate their knowledge of this field. The book takes the semi-classical approach where light is treated as a wave in accordance with the classical Maxwell equations, while matter is governed by quantum theory. It begins by introducing the postulates and mathematical framework of quantum theory, followed by the formalism of the density matrix which allows the transition from microscopic (quantum) quantities to macroscopic (classical) ones. Consequently, the equations describing the reaction of matter to the electromagnetic field in the form of polarization, magnetization, and current are derived. These equations (together with the Maxwell equations) form the complete system of equations sufficient to model a wide class of problems surrounding linear and nonlinear interactions of electromagnetic fields with matter. The nonlinear character of the governing equations determines parameters of the steady-state mode of the quantum generator and is also demonstrated in harmonic generation via propagation of laser radiation in various media. The touchstone description of magnetic phenomena will be of interest to scientists who deal with applications of magneto-resonance phenomena in biology and medicine. Other advanced topics covered include electric dipole transitions, magnetic dipole transitions, plasma transitions, and the devices that can be based on these and other electro-optical and nonlinear-optical systems. This textbook features numerous exercises, some of which are investigatory and some of which require computational solutions

TitleA Polymer Cochlear Electrode Array: Atraumatic Deep Insertion, Tripolar Stimulation, and Long-Term Reliability
Author(s)Gwon, Tae Mok
PublicationSingapore, Springer Singapore, 2018.
DescriptionXXV, 88 p. 62 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book describes the design, fabrication and evaluation of a polymer-based neural interface for a cochlear electrode array, reviewed in terms of fabrication process, functionality, and reliability. Polymer-based devices have attracted attention in the neural prosthetic field due to their flexibility and compatibility with micro-fabrication process. A liquid crystal polymer (LCP) is an inert, highly water-resistant polymer suitable for the encapsulation of electronic components and as a substrate material for fabricating neural interfaces. The author has designed, fabricated, and evaluated an LCP-based cochlear electrode array for an improved polymer-based cochlear implant. The thesis deals with 3 key topics: atraumatic deep insertion, tripolar stimulation, and long-term reliability. Atraumatic insertion of the intracochlear electrode and resulting preservation of residual hearing have become essential in state???of-the-art cochlear implantation. A novel tapered design of an LCP-based cochlear electrode array is presented to meet such goals. For high-density and pitch-recognizable cochlear implant, channel interaction should be avoided. Local tripolar stimulation using multi-layered electrode sites are shown to achieve highly focused electrical stimulation. This thesis addresses another vital issue in the polymer-based neural implants: the long-term reliability issue. After suggesting a new method of forming mechanical interlocking to improve polymer-metal adhesion, the author performs accelerating aging tests to verify the method???s efficacy. The aforementioned three topics have been thoroughly examined through various in vitro and in vivo studies. Verification foresees the development of LCP-based cochlear electrode array for an atraumatic deep insertion, advanced stimulation, and long-term clinical implant
