Abstract Note | The emergence of M6ssbauer spectroscopy as an important experi?? mental technique for the study of solids has resulted in a wide range of applications in chemistry, physics, metallurgy and biophysics. This book is intended to summarize the elementary principles of the technique at a level appropriate to the advanced student or experienced chemist requiring a moderately comprehensive but basically non-mathematical introduction. Thus the major part of the book is concerned with the practical applications of Mossbauer spectroscopy, using carefully selected examples to illustrate the concepts. The references cited and the bibliography are intended to provide a bridge to the main literature for those who subseouent?? ly require a deeper knowledge. The text is complementary to the longer research monograph, 'Mossbauer Spectroscopy', which was written a few years ago in co-authorship with Professor N.N. Greenwood, and to whom I am deeply indebted for reading the preliminary draft of the present volume. I also wish to thank my many colleagues over the past ten years, and in particular Dr. R. Greatrex, for the many stimu?? lating discussions which we have had together. Abstract Note | Kallen's Quantenelektrodynamik provides a concise treatment of the subject. Its strong points are the careful attention to ex?? planatory detail, the methodical coverage of all the maj or results and the straightforward, lucid style. Certainly it will be a val?? uable reference for one learning the subject or for one who re?? quires the details of the practical results. Of course modern quantum field theory has now grown far beyond its dramatic be?? ginnings in electrodynamics and we have therefore included some references to introduce the reader to the more recent and more specialized literature. We have corrected some minor errors: we would appreciate it if readers would inform us of any others which they find. We thank Professors Paul Urban and C. MtSller for permission to use the biographical material on Kallen. Abstract Note | Superionic conductors are solids whose ionic conductivities approach, and in some cases exceed, those of molten salts and electrolyte solutions. This implies an un?? usual state of matter in which some atoms have nearly liquidlike mobility while others retain their regular crystalline arrangement. This liquid-solid duality has much appeal to condensed matter physicists, and the coincident development of powerful new methods for studying disordered solids and interest in superionic conductors for technical applications has resulted in a new surge of activity in this venerable field. It is the purpose of this book to summarize the current re?? search in the physics of superionic conduction. with special emphasis on those aspects which set these materials apart from other solids. The volume is aimed to?? wards the materials community and will, we expect, stimulate further research on these potentially useful substances. The usual characterization of the superionic phase lists high ionic conductivity; low activation energy; and the open structure of the crystal, with its interconne?? ted network of vacant sites available to one ionic species. To these, as we demon?? strate in this volume, should be added important dynami~ and collective effect~: the absence of well-defined optical lattice modes, the presence of a pervasive, low-energy excitation, an infrared peak in the frequency-dependent conductivity, unusual NMR prefactors, phase transitions, and a strong tendency for the mobile ion to be found between allowed sites |
