TitleSocial Phenomena : From Data Analysis to Models
Author(s)Gon??alves, Bruno;Perra, Nicola
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2015.
DescriptionXII, 260 p. 71 illus., 67 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book focuses on the new possibilities and approaches to social modeling currently being made possible by an unprecedented variety of datasets generated by our interactions with modern technologies. This area has witnessed a veritable explosion of activity over the last few years, yielding many interesting and useful results. Our aim is to provide an overview of the state of the art in this area of research, merging an extremely heterogeneous array of datasets and models. Social Phenomena: From Data Analysis??to Models is divided into two parts. Part I deals with modeling social behavior under normal conditions: How we live, travel, collaborate and interact with each other in our daily lives. Part II deals with societal behavior under exceptional conditions: Protests, armed insurgencies, terrorist attacks, and reactions to infectious diseases. This book offers an overview of one of the most fertile emerging fields bringing together practitioners from scientific communities as diverse as social sciences, physics and computer science. We hope to not only provide an unifying framework to understand and characterize social phenomena, but also to help foster the dialogue between researchers working on similar problems from different fields and perspectives

TitleFast Variables in Stochastic Population Dynamics
Author(s)Constable, George William Albert
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2015.
DescriptionXVII, 163 p. 40 illus., 31 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract Note??In this thesis two variants of the fast variable elimination method are developed. They are intuitive, simple to implement and give results which are in very good agreement with those found from numerical simulations. The relative simplicity of the techniques makes them ideal for applying to problems featuring demographic stochasticity, for experts and non-experts alike. ?? Within the context of mathematical modelling, fast variable elimination is one of the central tools with which one can simplify a multivariate problem.?? When used in the context of of deterministic systems, the theory is quite standard, but when stochastic effects are present, it becomes less straightforward to apply. ?? While the introductory and background chapters form an excellent primer to the theory of stochastic population dynamics, the techniques developed can be applied to systems exhibiting a separation of timescales in a variety of fields including population genetics, ecology and epidemiology. ??

TitleComplexity Perspectives on Language, Communication and Society
Author(s)Massip-Bonet, ??ngels;Bastardas-Boada, Albert
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2013.
DescriptionXVI, 256 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe ???language-communication-society??? triangle defies traditional scientific approaches. Rather, it is a phenomenon that calls for an integration of complex, transdisciplinary perspectives, if we are to make any progress in understanding how it works. The highly diverse agents in play are not merely cognitive and/or cultural, but also emotional and behavioural in their specificity. Indeed, the effort may require building a theoretical and methodological body of knowledge that can effectively convey the characteristic properties of phenomena in human terms. New complexity approaches allow us to rethink our limited and mechanistic images of human societies and create more appropriate emo-cognitive dynamic and holistic models. We have to enter into dialogue with the complexity views coming out of other more ???material??? sciences, but we also need to take steps in the linguistic and psycho-sociological fields towards creating perspectives and concepts better fitted to human characteristics. Our understanding of complexity is different ??? but not opposed ??? to the one that is more commonly found in texts written by people working in physics or computer science, for example. The goal of this book is to extend the knowledge of these other more ???human??? or socially oriented perspectives on complexity, taking account of the language and communication singularities of human agents in society. ?? ??

TitleEconophysics of Agent-Based Models
Author(s)Frederic Abergel (ed.);Hideaki Aoyama (ed.);Bikas K. Chakrabarti (ed.);Anirban Chakraborti (ed.);Ghosh, Asim
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2014.
DescriptionVIII, 302 p. 91 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteThe primary goal of this book is to present the research findings and conclusions of physicists, economists, mathematicians and financial engineers working in the field of "Econophysics" who have undertaken agent-based modelling, comparison with empirical studies and related investigations. Most standard economic models assume the existence of the representative agent, who is ???perfectly rational??? and applies the utility maximization principle when taking action. One reason for this is the desire to keep models mathematically tractable: no tools are available to economists for solving non-linear models of heterogeneous adaptive agents without explicit optimization. In contrast, multi-agent models, which originated from statistical physics considerations, allow us to go beyond the prototype theories of traditional economics involving the representative agent. This book is based on the Econophys-Kolkata VII Workshop, at which many such modelling efforts were presented. In the book, leading researchers in their fields report on their latest work, consider recent developments and review the contemporary literature

TitleEconodynamics : The Theory of Social Production
Author(s)Pokrovskii, Vladimir N
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 2012.
DescriptionXII, 200 p : online resource
Abstract NoteIn this book the theory of social production is systematically formulated in terms and concepts of classical political economy and neo-classical economics. In this way the subject becomes accessible not only to professional researchers in the areas of theory of production and economic growth, but also to the educated reader who is curious about the principles behind the functioning of a national economy. The book can be considered as an introduction for students with a background in physics, chemistry and engineering, who wish to specialize in economics. The??author explains how the growth of production is connected with achievements in technological consumption of labour and energy. The theory allows one to analyse the past and the present of the social production system and to build scripts of the future progress. The book could be interesting for energy specialists who are?? engaged in planning and analysing production and consumption of energy carriers and determining energy policy, and for economists who want to know how energy and technology are affecting economic growth

TitleStochastic Processes : From Physics to Finance
Author(s)Paul, Wolfgang;Baschnagel, J??rg
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2013.
DescriptionXIII, 280 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThis??book introduces the theory of stochastic processes with applications taken from physics and finance. Fundamental concepts like the random walk or Brownian motion but also Levy-stable distributions are discussed. Applications are selected to show the interdisciplinary character of the concepts and methods. In the second edition of the book a discussion of extreme events ranging from their mathematical definition to their importance for financial crashes was included. The exposition of basic notions of probability theory and the Brownian motion problem as well as the relation between conservative diffusion processes and quantum mechanics is expanded. The second edition also enlarges??the treatment of financial markets. Beyond a presentation of geometric Brownian motion and the Black-Scholes approach to option pricing as well as the econophysics analysis of the stylized facts of financial markets, an introduction to agent based modeling approaches is given

TitleComplex and Adaptive Dynamical Systems : A Primer
Author(s)Gros, Claudius
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2013.
DescriptionXIV, 345 p. 124 illus., 63 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteComplex system theory is rapidly developing and gaining importance, providing tools and concepts central to our modern understanding of emergent phenomena. This primer offers an introduction to this area together with detailed coverage of the mathematics involved. All calculations are presented step by step and are straightforward to follow. This new third edition comes with new material, figures and exercises. Network theory, dynamical systems and information theory, the core of modern complex system sciences, are developed in the first three chapters, covering basic concepts and phenomena like small-world networks, bifurcation theory and information entropy. Further chapters use a modular approach to address the most important concepts in complex system sciences, with the emergence and self-organization playing a central role. Prominent examples are self-organized criticality in adaptive systems, life at the edge of chaos, hypercycles and coevolutionary avalanches, synchronization phenomena, absorbing phase transitions and the cognitive system approach to the brain. Technical course prerequisites are the standard mathematical tools for an advanced undergraduate course in the natural sciences or engineering. Each chapter comes with exercises and suggestions for further reading - solutions to the exercises are provided in the last chapter. From the reviews of previous editions: This is a very interesting introductory book written for a broad audience of graduate students in natural sciences and engineering. It can be equally well used both for teaching and self-education. Very well structured and every topic is illustrated by simple and motivating examples. This is a true guidebook to the world of complex nonlinear phenomena. (Ilya Pavlyukevich, Zentralblatt MATH, Vol. 1146, 2008) "Claudius Gros's Complex and Adaptive Dynamical Systems: A Primer is a welcome addition to the literature. . A particular strength of the book is its emphasis on analytical techniques for studying complex systems. (David P. Feldman, Physics Today, July, 2009)

TitleWhy Society is a Complex Matter : Meeting Twenty-first Century Challenges with a New Kind of Science
Author(s)Ball, Philip
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2012.
Description80 p. 35 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteSociety is complicated. But this book argues that this does not place it beyond the reach of a science that can help to explain and perhaps even to predict social behaviour. As a system made up of many interacting agents ??? people, groups, institutions and governments, as well as physical and technological structures such as roads and computer networks ??? society can be regarded as a complex system. In recent years, scientists have made great progress in understanding how such complex systems operate, ranging from animal populations to earthquakes and weather. These systems show behaviours that cannot be predicted or intuited by focusing on the individual components, but which emerge spontaneously as a consequence of their interactions: they are said to be ???self-organized???. Attempts to direct or manage such emergent properties generally reveal that ???top-down??? approaches, which try to dictate a particular outcome, are ineffectual, and that what is needed instead is a ???bottom-up??? approach that aims to guide self-organization towards desirable states. This book shows how some of these ideas from the science of complexity can be applied to the study and management of social phenomena, including traffic flow, economic markets, opinion formation and the growth and structure of cities. Building on these successes, the book argues that the complex-systems view of the social sciences has now matured sufficiently for it to be possible, desirable and perhaps essential to attempt a grander objective: to integrate these efforts into a unified scheme for studying, understanding and ultimately predicting what happens in the world we have made. Such a scheme would require the mobilization and collaboration of many different research communities, and would allow society and its interactions with the physical environment to be explored through realistic models and large-scale data collection and analysis. It should enable us to find new and effective solutions to major global problems such as conflict, disease, financial instability, environmental despoliation and poverty, while avoiding unintended policy consequences. It could give us the foresight to anticipate and ameliorate crises, and to begin tackling some of the most intractable problems of the twenty-first century

TitlePhysics of Societal Issues : Calculations on National Security, Environment, and Energy
Author(s)Hafemeister, David
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer New York, 2007.
DescriptionXVIII, 487 p. 111 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteWhy this book on the Physics of Societal Issues? The subdivisions of physics - nuclear physics, particle physics, condensed-matter physics, biophysics - have their textbooks, while the subdivision of physics and society lacks an equation-oriented text on the physics of arms, energy and the environment. Physics of Societal Issues is intended for undergraduate and doctoral students who may work on applied topics, or who simply want to know why things are the way they are. Decisions guiding policies on nuclear arms, energy and the environment often seem mysterious and contradictory. What is the science behind the deployment of MIRVed ICBMs, the quest for space-based beam weapons, the fear of powerline EM fields, the wholesale acceptance of SUVs, the issues of climactic change, and the failure of the pre-embargo market to produce buildings and appliances that now save over 50 power plants? Physics of Societal Issues is three "mini-texts" in one: National Security (5 chapters): Weapons, offense, defense, verification, nuclear proliferation Environment (4 chapters): Air/water, nuclear, climate change, EM fields/epidemiology Energy (7 chapters): Current energy situation, buildings, solar buildings, renewables, enhanced end-use, transport, economics "Straightforward calculations and supporting analysis can significantly shape public policy. This insight is needed in Congress and the Executive Branch. Hafemeister, a former Congressional fellow with wide Washington experience, has written a book for physicists, chemists and engineers who want to learn science and policy on weapons, energy, and the environment. Scientists who want to make a difference will want this book." Richard Scribner, a Founder and first Director, Congressional Science and Engineering Fellow Program, AAAS "Hafemeister shows how much one can understand about nuclear weapons and missile issues through simple back-of-the-envelope calculations. He also provides compact explanations of the partially successful attempts that have been made over the past 60 years to control these weapons of mass destruction. Hopefully, Physics of Societal Issues will help interest a new generation of physicists in continuing this work." Frank von Hippel, Professor, Princeton University, former Assistant Director, National Security, White House, OSTP "Energy policy must be quantitative. People who don't calculate economic trade-offs often champion simplistic hardware. ???The solution is more .... nuclear power, or electric cars, or photovoltaics, etc.??? Some simple physics will show that the true solution matches supply and demand as an ???integrated resource plan.??? Physics of Societal Issues is a good place to begin this journey." Arthur Rosenfeld, California Energy Commissioner, Professor-emeritus, University of California-Berkeley "Political analysis of public policies that ignores technical reality is about as useful as technical analysis that ignores political reality. In this book, David Hafemeister demonstrates a solid grasp of both the technical and political realities that have shaped US arms control and defense policy for the past five decades. This is a rare treat." Dean Wilkening, Science Director, Center for International Security and Cooperation, Stanford University
