DescriptionVIII, 252 p. 101 illus., 84 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteNations around the globe consider physics education an important tool of economic and social development and currently advocate the use of innovative strategies to prepare students for knowledge and skills acquisition. Particularly in the last decade, a series of revisions were made to physics curricula in an attempt to cope with the changing needs and expectations of society. Educational transformation is a major challenge due to educational systems??? resistance to change. Updated curriculum content, pedagogical facilities (for example, computers in a school), new teaching and learning strategies and the prejudice against girls in physics classes are all issues that have to be addressed. Educational research provides a way to build schemas and resources to promote changes in physics education. This volume presents physics teaching and learning research connected with the main educational scenarios

TitleNuclear Proliferation and Terrorism in the Post-9/11 World
Author(s)Hafemeister, David
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2016.
DescriptionXXIV, 434 p. 52 illus., 35 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book fills a clear gap in the literature for a technically-focused book covering nuclear proliferation and related issues post-9/11. Using a concept-led approach which serves a broad readership, it provides detailed overview of nuclear weapons, nuclear proliferation and international nuclear policy. The author addresses topics including offensive and defensive missile systems, command and control, verification, weapon effects, and nuclear testing. A chronology of nuclear arms is presented including detailed discussion of the Cold War, proliferation, and arms control treaties. The book is tailored to courses on nuclear proliferation, and the general reader will also find it a fascinating introduction to the science and strategy behind international nuclear policy in the modern era. ???Finally, a spritely, accessible overview of the nuclear world in historical context from someone who has both seen it from the U.S. State Department and Congressional policy trenches and taught it for 43 years. A gift to both concerned citizens and interested students.??? Frank von Hippel, Prof. Public and International Affairs (emeritus), Princeton University ???The threat of nuclear weapons has been with the world community for a long time. Global destruction was narrowly avoided three or four times or more during the Cold War with the use of such weapons remaining an immediate threat in some parts of the world??? David Hafemeister's outstanding new book provides the reader this essential review of the threat, taking into account its many manifestations in a careful and thorough way. It should not be missed.??? Thomas Graham, Jr., former Special Representative of the President for Arms Control and Non-proliferation ???Hafemeister's Nuclear Proliferation and Terrorism contains a wealth of information about nuclear and other weapons of mass destruction. The reader ??? whether professionally involved with these weapons or a citizen seeking to become better informed ??? will come away with a sober appreciation of the dangers, and with increased insight into how the world seeks to eliminate them.??? Pierce Corden, former Admin. Exec. Officer, Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Commission ???For more than 70 years since August 9, 1945, nuclear weapons have not been detonated in war, and terrorists have yet to acquire these weapons. Will humanity be so fortunate for the next 70 years? To learn what can and should be done to further reduce the risks of these and other dangers, read David Hafemeister???s excellent book.??? TitleThe Rise of the Scientist-Bureaucrat : Survival Guide for Researchers in the 21st Century
Author(s)Perez Velazquez, Jose Luis
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2019.
DescriptionXII, 104 p : online resource
Abstract Note"Perez Velazquez has written a little gem that I advise reading to anyone persuing a scientific career, as well as for the general public interested in the sociological aspects of science. It alerts the reader about the rise of a new type of scientist, buried in bureaucracy and financial issues. In contrast to past generations, this "new scientist" is sadly left with minimal time to dedicate to creative work. It studies the consequences of this state of affairs, the problems associated with peer reviewing, the dilemma of funding innovative research, the nature of corporate academic culture and the trivialization of scientific achievement by grant agencies and universities. It also provides possible solutions for these problems. All this is magnificently exemplified and documented, including personal experiences from the author and a touch of humor illustrated in the accompanying cartoons. Despite the humor, it is a serious piece of work that would also be useful for the conscientious academic worried about the difficulties of the current research scene. " Marina Frantseva, MD, PhD Jose Luis Perez Velazquez is a Spanish biochemist/biophysicist. He has a degree in Biochemistry and a PhD in Molecular Physiology & Biophysics. His research activities are mainly in the fields of the brain-behaviour relation at a high level of description, seeking principles of biological organisation. He worked as a senior scientist at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto and was Professor at the University of Toronto, where he taught a graduate course on consciousness and self-awareness, which derived in part from his book The Brain-Behaviour Continuum (World Scientific). He also edited the book Coordinated Activity in the Brain (Springer), and edited special issues for The Journal of Biological Physics, Frontiers in Integrative Neuroscience and Frontiers in Computational Neuroscience. Currently he is a Research Scholar at the Ronin Institute, where he continues to investigate a possible global principle, a scheme that combines theoretical studies and experimental observations, aimed at conceptualizing how consciousness arises from the organization of matter

TitlePlutonium : How Nuclear Power???s Dream Fuel Became a Nightmare
Author(s)von Hippel, Frank;Takubo, Masafumi;Kang, Jungmin
PublicationSingapore, Springer Singapore, 2019.
DescriptionXXI, 177 p. 51 illus., 44 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book provides a readable and thought-provoking analysis of the issues surrounding nuclear fuel reprocessing and fast-neutron reactors, including discussion of resources, economics, radiological risk and resistance to nuclear proliferation. It describes the history and science behind reprocessing, and gives an overview of the status of reprocessing programmes around the world. It concludes that such programs should be discontinued. While nuclear power is seen by many as the only realistic solution to the carbon emission problem, some national nuclear establishments have been pursuing development and deployment of sodium-cooled plutonium breeder reactors, and plutonium recycling. Its proponents argue that this system would offer significant advantages relative to current light water reactor technology in terms of greater uranium utilization efficiency, and that separating out the long-lived plutonium and other transuranics from spent fuel and fissioning them in fast reactors would greatly reduce the duration of the toxicity of radioactive waste. However, the history of efforts to deploy this system commercially in a number of countries over the last six decades has been one of economic and technical failure and, in some cases, was used to mask clandestine nuclear weapon development programs. Covering topics of significant public interest including nuclear safety, fuel storage, environmental impact and the spectre of nuclear terrorism, this book presents a comprehensive analysis of the issue for nuclear engineers, policy analysts, government officials and the general public.
