TitleQuantum Dynamical Semigroups and Applications
Author(s)Alicki, Robert;Lendi, Karl
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1987.
DescriptionVIII, 198 p. 1 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteIn this text the authors develop quantum dynamics of open systems for a wide class of irreversible processes starting from the concept of completely positive semigroups. This unified approach makes the material easily accessible to non-specialists and provides an easy access to practical applications. Written for graduate students, the book presents a wealth of useful examples; in particular, models of unstable and N-level systems are treated systematically and in considerable detail including new types of generated Bloch-equations. The general theory is extensively summarized from abstract dynamical maps to those obtained by a reduction of Hamiltonian dynamics under a Markovian approximation. Various methods of determining semigroup generators and the corresponding master equations are discussed including time-dependent and nonlinear generators. Further topics treated are a generalized H-theorem, quantum detailed balance and return to equilibrium, discrete quantum Boltzmann equation, nonlinear Schr??dinger equation, spin relaxation by spin waves, entropy production and its generalization by a measure of irreversibiblity

TitleComputer Simulation Studies in Condensed Matter Physics III : Proceedings of the Third Workshop Athens, GA, USA, February 12???16, 1990
Author(s)Landau, David P;Mon, K.K;Sch??ttler, Heinz-Bernd
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1991.
DescriptionVIII, 215 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe contribution of computer simulation studies to our understanding of the prop?? erties of a wide range of condensed matter systems is now weIl established. The Center for Simulational Physics of the University of Georgia has been hosting a series of annual workshops with the intent of bringing together experienced prac?? titioners in the field, as weIl as relative newcomers, to provide a forum for the exchange of ideas and recent results. This year's workshop, the third in the series, was held February 12-16, 1990. These proceedings are arecord of the workshop and are published with the goal of timely dissemination of the papers to a wider audience. The proceedings are divided into four parts. The first contains invited pa?? pers dealing with simulational studies of classical systems and also includes an introduction to some new simulation techniques. Aseparate section is devoted to invited papers on quantum systems, including new results for strongly correlated electron and quantum spin models believed to be important for the description of high-Tc superconductors. The third part consists of a single invited paper, which presents a comprehensive treatment of issues associated with high perfor?? mance computing, including differences in architectures and a discussion of access strategies. The contributed papers constitute the final part

TitleMagnetohydrodynamic Equilibrium and Stability of Stellarators
Author(s)Bauer, F;Betancourt, O;Garabedian, P
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer New York, 1984.
DescriptionX, 196 p : online resource
Abstract NoteIn this book, we describe in detail a numerical method to study the equilibrium and stability of a plasma confined by a strong magnetic field in toroidal geometry without two-dimensional symmetry. The principal appli?? cation is to stellarators, which are currently of interest in thermonuclear fusion research. Our mathematical model is based on the partial differential equations of ideal magnetohydrodynamics. The main contribution is a computer code named BETA that is listed in the final chapter. This work is the natural continuation of an investigation that was presented in an early volume of the Springer Series in Computational Physics (cf. [3]). It has been supported over a period of years by the U.S. Department of Energy under Contract DE-AC02-76ER03077 with New York University. We would like to express our gratitude to Dr. Franz Herrnegger for the assistance he has given us with the preparation of the manuscript. We are especially indebted to Connie Engle for the high quality of the final typescript. New York F. BAUER October 1983 O. BETANCOURT P. GARABEDIAN Contents 1. Introduction 1 2. TitleComputer Simulation of Ion-Solid Interactions
Author(s)Eckstein, Wolfgang
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1991.
DescriptionXI, 296 p : online resource
Abstract NoteIn this book the author discusses the investigation of ion bombardment of solids by computer simulation, with the aim of demonstrating the usefulness of this approach to the problem of interactions of ions with solids. The various chapters present the basic physics behind the simulation programs, their structure and many applications to different topics. The two main streams, the binary collision model and the classical dynamics model, are discussed, as are interaction potentials and electronic energy losses. The main topics investigated are backscattering, sputtering and implantation for incident atomic particles with energies from the eV to the MeV range. An extensive overview of the literature is given, making this book of interest to the active reseacher as well to students entering the field

TitleProbability, Statistical Optics, and Data Testing : A Problem Solving Approach
Author(s)Frieden, B.R
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1983.
Descriptiononline resource
Abstract NoteA basic skill in probability is practically demanded nowadays in many bran?? ches of optics, especially in image science. On the other hand, there is no text presently available that develops probability, and its companion fields stochastic processes and statistics, from the optical perspective. [Short of a book, a chapter was recently written for this purpose; see B. R. Frieden (ed. ): The Computer in Optical Research, Topics in Applied Physics, Vol. 41 (Springer, Berlin, Heidelberg, New York 1980) Chap. 3] Most standard texts either use illustrative examples and problems from electrical engineering or from the life sciences. The present book is meant to remedy this situation, by teaching probability with the specific needs of the optical researcher in mind. Virtually all the illustrative examples and applications of the theory are from image science and other fields of optics. One might say that photons have replaced electrons in nearly all considera?? tions here. We hope, in this manner, to make the learning of probability a pleasant and absorbing experience for optical workers. Some of the remaining applications are from information theory, a con?? cept which complements image science in particular. As will be seen, there are numerous tie-ins between the two concepts. Students will be adequately prepared for the material in this book if they have had a course in calculus, and know the basics of matrix manipulation

TitleComputational Techniques for Fluid Dynamics 1 : Fundamental and General Techniques
Author(s)Fletcher, Clive A.J
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1988.
DescriptionXIV, 409 p. 17 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteThe purpose of this two-volume textbook is to provide students of engineer?? ing, science and applied mathematics with the specific techniques, and the framework to develop skill in using them, that have proven effective in the various branches of computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Volume 1 de?? scribes both fundamental and general techniques that are relevant to all branches of fluid flow. Volume 2 provides specific techniques, applicable to the different categories of engineering flow behaviour, many of which are also appropriate to convective heat transfer. An underlying theme of the text ist that the competing formulations which are suitable for computational fluid dynamics, e.g. the finite differ?? ence, finite element, finite volume and spectral methods, are closely related and can be interpreted as part of a unified structure. Classroom experience indicates that this approach assists, considerably, the student in acquiring a deeper understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of the alternative computational methods. Through the provision of 24 computer programs and associated exam?? ples and problems, the present text is also suitable for established research workers and practitioners who wish to acquire computational skills without the benefit of formal instruction. The text includes the most up-to-date techniques and is supported by more than 300 figures and 500 references
