TitleNeuronal Cooperativity
Author(s)Kr??ger, J??rgen
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1991.
DescriptionXII, 302 p : online resource
Abstract NoteSoon after the technique of micro electrode recording had become a routine method in the 1950s, many researchers felt that an obvious next step was to in?? vestigate the behaviour of larger networks of interacting cells. However, despite many early efforts, very little progress was made in that direction: a conceptual basis had not yet evolved, and the computer as an analytical tool was not avail?? able. This has now changed, with the result that the cooperation of neurons is again becoming a focus of interest. In 1987, with the support of the Volkswagen Foundation, I was able to organize a conference on the subject of neuronal cooperativity near Freiburg, W. Germany, bringing together theoreticians and experimentalists working in this field. It became clear that many new theoretical concepts had evolved since the early days but that experiments on the subject were still difficult. Later, with the encouragement of Professor H. Haken, editor of the Springer Series in Synergetics, I decided to ask a number of experimentalists, many of whom had participated in the conference, to contribute to a book. The aim was not to focus exclusively on the newest results but rather to give an overall idea of how the difficult question of cooperativity can be approached experimentally

TitleSupramolecular Structure and Function
Author(s)Pifat, Greta
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer US, 1983.
DescriptionVIII, 366 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe molecular basis of life has been a rapidly growing field of science. There is perhaps no other field where such diverse profiles of scientists, ranging from applied mathematicians and theoretical physicists to experimental biologists and medical doctors (physicians), are compelled to communicate and even to col?? laborate. This diversity makes the exchange of information richer but at the same time more cumbersome. One way to facilitate the exchange of information and to overcome the barriers between the different languages used by physicists, chemists and biologists is to organize a meeting on a subject of common interest. A par?? ticularly suitable form of such a meeting for younger scientists is a school at an undergraduate or postgraduate level. This volume contains a collection of lectures presented at the International Summer School in Biophysics, held under the title "Supramolecular Structure and Function" in Dubrovnik, Yugoslavia, in September 1981. The topics discussed at the school were inter- and intramolecular interactions in biological systems, and structure, organization and function of biological macromole?? cules and supramolecular structures. Although not all the lectures could be prepared in a written form on time for publication, we hope that the present volume contains valuable up-to-date infor?? mation on various aspects of the molecular basis of life. We wish to express our gratitude to the eminent authors and to state that, having received so much valuable assistance from them, we as editors can only attach our names to apologies for any erro~s that may remain

TitleCooperative Dynamics in Complex Physical Systems : Proceedings of the Second Yukawa International Symposium, Kyoto, Japan, August 24???27, 1988
Author(s)Takayama, Hajime
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1989.
DescriptionXVI, 340 p : online resource
Abstract NoteMany novel cooperative phenomena found in a variety of systems studied by scientists can be treated using the uniting principles of synergetics. Examples are frustrated and random systems, polymers, spin glasses, neural networks, chemical and biological systems, and fluids. In this book attention is focused on two main problems. First, how local, topological constraints (frustrations) can cause macroscopic cooperative behavior: related ideas initially developed for spin glasses are shown to play key roles also for optimization and the modeling of neural networks. Second, the dynamical constraints that arise from the nonlinear dynamics of the systems: the discussion covers turbulence in fluids, pattern formation, and conventional 1/f noise. The volume will be of interest to anyone wishing to understand the current development of work on complex systems, which is presently one of the most challenging subjects in statistical and condensed matter physics

PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1998.
DescriptionXIX, 383 p. 400 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book contains state-of-the-art reviews and up-to-date progress reports in the field of X-ray microscopy and spectromicroscopy, including related new X-ray optics and X-ray sources. It reflects the lively activities in a relatively new field of science which combines the development of new instruments and methods with their applications to numerous topical scientific questions. The applications range from biological and medical topics, colloid physics, and soil sciences to solid-state physics, material sciences, and surface sciences. The book appeals to researchers who are active in microscopic and spectromicroscopic studies

TitleModels of Neural Networks
Author(s)Domany, Eytan;Hemmen, J. Leo van;Schulten, Klaus
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1991.
DescriptionXVI, 347 p : online resource
Abstract NoteOne of the great inteJlectual cha1lenges for the next few decades is the question of brain organization. What is the basic mechanism for storage of memory? What are the processes that serve as the interphase between the basically chemical processes of the body and the very specific and nonstatistical operations in the brain? Above all. how is concept formation achieved in the human brain? I wonder whether the spirit of the physics that will be involved in these studies will not be akin to that which moved the founders of the ''rational foundation of thermodynamics". CN. Yangl 10 The human brain is said 10 have roughly 10 neurons connected through about 14 10 synapses. Each neuron is itself a complex device which compares and integrates incoming electrical signals and relays a nonlinear response to other neurons. The brain certainly exceeds in complexity any system which physicists have studied in the past. Nevertheless, there do exist many analogies of the We have witnessed during the last decade brain to simpler physical systems

TitlePhotoacoustic, Photothermal and Photochemical Processes at Surfaces and in Thin Films
Author(s)Hess, Peter
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1989.
DescriptionXIV, 376 p : online resource
Abstract NoteReview articles by leading scientists in their fields are brought together in this volume to provide a comprehensive treatment of photoacoustic, photothermal and photochemical processes at surfaces and in thin films. The articles introduce the fields, review present knowledge and conclude with latest developments and future prospects. Topics covered include laser-induced desorption, ablation and surface damage; surface acoustic waves; photothermal and photoacoustic characterization of thin films and interfaces; depth profiling in the frequency and time domains; remote testing and nondestructive evaluation; materials characterization; and new theoretical approaches using fractals. The book will interest newcomers to photoacoustics, since it gives an overview of current research and details of experimental methods. It will also be a source of information for those already in the field due to its clear presentation of theory and experimental results. All relevant literature references in this rapidly expanding field are included
