Title | Nuclear Threats and Security Challenges |
Author(s) | Apikyan, Samuel;Diamond, David |
Publication | Dordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 2015. |
Description | IX, 285 p. 64 illus., 54 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | With the dissolution of the Soviet Union the nuclear threats facing the world are constantly evolving and have grown more complex since the end of the Cold War. The diversion of complete weapon systems or nuclear material to rogue nations and terrorist organizations has increased. The events of the past years have proved the necessity to reevaluate these threats on a level never before considered.?? In recognition that no single country possesses all of the answers to the critical scientific, institutional and legal questions associated with combating nuclear and radiological terrorism, the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on ???Preparedness for Nuclear and Radiological Threats??? and this proceeding was structured to promote wide-ranging, multi-national exploration of critical technology needs and underlying scientific challenges to reducing the threat of nuclear/radiological terrorism; to illustrate through country-specific presentations how resulting technologies were used in national programs; and to outline the role of legal, policy and institutional frameworks in countering nuclear/radiological terrorism. One key outcome of this book is better understanding of the interdependent contributions from across the international community of the scientific and technological components and the legal, policy and institutional components to combating nuclear and radiological threats |

Title | Terahertz and Mid Infrared Radiation : Generation, Detection and Applications |
Author(s) | Pereira, Mauro F;Shulika, Oleksiy |
Publication | Dordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 2011. |
Description | XXVIII, 202 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | Terahertz (THz) and Mid-Infrared (MIR) radiation?? (TERA-MIR) can be transmitted through nearly any material without causing biological harm. Novel and rapid methods of detection can be created with devices operation in these spectral ranges allowing scanning for weapons, detecting hidden explosives (including plastic landmines), controlling the quality of food and a host of other exciting applications.?? This book focuses on mathematical and physical aspects of the field, on unifying these two spectral domains (THz and MIR) with regard to common sources, detectors, materials and applications, and on key interdisciplinary topics. The main THz and MIR source is the quantum cascade laser (QCL). Thus significant attention is paid to the challenge of turning this advanced technology into affordable commercial devices so as to exploit its enormous potential. However other alternatives to THz QCLs are also presented, e.g.?? sub-terahertz imaging from avalanching GaAs bipolar transistors, Josephson junctions as THz sources, semiconductor materials for pulsed THz sources,?? superconducting THz electronics with Josephson vortices.?? In summary this book delivers a global picture of the state of the art in TERA-MIR generation, detection and applications |

Title | Physics of Societal Issues : Calculations on National Security, Environment, and Energy |
Author(s) | Hafemeister, David |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer New York, 2014. |
Description | XX, 668 p. 109 illus., 38 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book provides the reader with essential tools needed to analyze complex societal issues and demonstrates the transition from physics to modern-day laws and treaties. This second edition features new equation-oriented material and extensive data sets drawing upon current information from experts in their fields. Problems to challenge the reader and extend discussion are presented on three timely issues: ?? ????????????????? National Security: Weapons, Offense, Defense, Verification, Nuclear Proliferation, Terrorism ????????????????? Environment: Air/Water, Nuclear, Climate Change, EM Fields/Epidemiology ????????????????? Energy: Current Energy Situation, Buildings, Solar Buildings, Renewable ??Energy, Enhanced End-Use Efficiency, Transportation, Economics ?? Praise for the first edition: "This insight is needed in Congress and the Executive Branch. Hafemeister, a former Congressional fellow with wide Washington experience, has written a book for physicists, chemists and engineers who want to learn science and policy on weapons, energy, and the environment. Scientists who want to make a difference will want this book." Richard Scribner, first Director, Congressional Science and Engineering Fellow Program, AAAS ?? "Hafemeister shows how much one can understand about nuclear weapons and missile issues through simple back-of-the-envelope calculations. He also provides compact explanations of the partially successful attempts that have been made over the past 60 years to control these weapons of mass destruction. Hopefully, Physics of Societal Issues will help interest a new generation of physicists in continuing this work." Frank von Hippel, Professor, Princeton, former Assistant Director, National Security, White House, OSTP ?? "Energy policy must be quantitative. People who don't calculate economic tradeoffs often champion simplistic hardware. ???The solution is more... nuclear power, or electric cars, or photovoltaics, etc.??? Some simple physics will show that the true solution matches supply and demand as an ???integrated resource plan.??? Physics of Societal Issues is a good place to begin this journey." Arthur Rosenfeld, former California Energy Commissioner, Professor-emeritus, U. of California-Berkeley |
