TitleAir Lasing
Author(s)Polynkin, Pavel;Cheng, Ya
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2018.
DescriptionXII, 143 p. 107 illus., 95 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book presents the first comprehensive, interdisciplinary review of the rapidly developing field of air lasing. In most applications of lasers, such as cutting and engraving, the laser source is brought to the point of service where the laser beam is needed to perform its function. However, in some important applications such as remote atmospheric sensing, placing the laser at a convenient location is not an option. Current sensing schemes rely on the detection of weak backscattering of ground-based, forward-propagating optical probes, and possess limited sensitivity. The concept of air lasing (or atmospheric lasing) relies on the idea that the constituents of the air itself can be used as an active laser medium, creating a backward-propagating, impulsive, laser-like radiation emanating from a remote location in the atmosphere. This book provides important insights into the current state of development of air lasing and its applications

TitleNonequilibrium Dynamics of Collective Excitations in Quantum Materials
Author(s)Baldini, Edoardo
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2018.
DescriptionLIV, 316 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book studies the dynamics of fundamental collective excitations in quantum materials, focusing on the use of state-of-the-art ultrafast broadband optical spectroscopy. Collective behaviour in solids lies at the origin of several cooperative phenomena that can lead to profound transformations, instabilities and phase transitions. Revealing the dynamics of collective excitations is a topic of pivotal importance in contemporary condensed matter physics, as it provides information on the strength and spatial distribution of interactions and correlation. The experimental framework explored in this book relies on setting a material out-of-equilibrium by an ultrashort laser pulse and monitoring the photo-induced changes in its optical properties over a broad spectral region in the visible or deep-ultraviolet. Collective excitations (e.g. plasmons, excitons, phonons???) emerge either in the frequency domain as spectral features across the probed range, or in the time domain as coherent modes triggered by the pump pulse. Mapping the temporal evolution of these collective excitations provides access to the hierarchy of low-energy phenomena occurring in the solid during its path towards thermodynamic equilibrium. This methodology is used to investigate a number of strongly interacting and correlated materials with an increasing degree of internal complexity beyond conventional band theory

TitleThe Iodine Molecule : Insights into Intra- and Intermolecular Perturbation in Diatomic Molecules
Author(s)Lukashov, Sergey;Petrov, Alexander;Pravilov, Anatoly
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2018.
DescriptionXVI, 199 p. 81 illus., 43 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book presents experimental and theoretical spectroscopic studies performed over the last 25 years on the iodine molecule???s excited states and their perturbations. It is going to be of interest to researchers who study intra- and intermolecular perturbations in diatomic molecules and more complex systems. The book offers a detailed treatment of the nonadiabatic perturbations of valence, ion pair and Rydberg states induced by intramolecular as well as intermolecular interactions in collisions or in weakly-bound complexes. It also provides an overview of current instrumentation and techniques as well as theoretical approaches describing intra- and intermolecular perturbations. The authors are experts in the use of spectroscopy for the study of intrinsic and collision-induced perturbations in diatomic iodine. They introduced new methods of two- and three-step optical population of the iodine ion-pair states. The iodine molecule has 23 valence states correlating with three dissociation limits, 20 so-called ion-pair states, nestled in four tiers and a multitude of Rydberg states. All the states have different angular momenta, parities and very dense rovibronic levels. Moreover, perturbations caused by atomic or molecular partners lead to effective nonadiabatic transitions. For these reasons the authors propose this molecule as a model system for spectroscopic studies of intra- and intermolecular perturbations in other diatomic molecules

TitleAngle Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy of Delafossite Metals
Author(s)Sunko, Veronika
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2019.
DescriptionXVII, 198 p. 122 illus., 104 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis thesis describes the results of angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy experiments on delafossite oxide metals, and theoretical work explaining these observations. The study was motivated by the extraordinarily high conductivity of the non-magnetic delafossites PdCoO2 and PtCoO2, the measurement of whose electronic structure is reported and discussed. Two unexpected effects were observed in the course of the investigation; each is described and analysed in detail. Firstly, a previously unrecognised type of spectroscopic signal, allowing the non-magnetic probe of photoemission to become sensitive to spin-spin correlations, was observed in the antiferromagnetic PdCrO2. Its origin was identified as the Kondo-like coupling of itinerant and Mott insulating electrons. Furthermore, surface states exhibiting an unusually large Rashba-like spin-splitting were observed on the transition metal terminated surfaces of delafossites. The large inversion symmetry breaking energy scale, a consequence of the unusual structure of the surface layer, is identified as the origin of the effect
