Title | The Large Hadron Collider : Unraveling the Mysteries of the Universe |
Author(s) | Beech, Martin |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer New York, 2010. |
Description | XIII, 218 p. 157 illus., 28 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is the largest engineering project ever undertaken, and one of the most expensive. Why are physicists around the world so excited about it? What secrets of the universe does this gargantuan piece of machinery hope to reveal? What risks are there in operating it? Could the exotic particles that are produced in the collisions???including tiny black holes that should wink into and out of existence??? between subatomic particles be a threat not only to humankind but to the planet itself? In this thorough and engaging review of cutting-edge physics and cosmology, you will learn why the collider was built and how it works. You will find out what scientists are hoping to find out and what current aspects of the Standard Model might need to be revised. You will even learn about the quest to identify so-called dark matter and dark energy, which many now feel make up most of what's out there. This is a wild ride into some very unfamiliar and strange territory, but it is well worth your time to explore, as the Large Hadron Collider is set to change some very fundamental ideas of our universe, from the smallest pieces that make it up to the grandest |

Title | The Doomsday Lobby : Hype and Panic from Sputniks, Martians, and Marauding Meteors |
Author(s) | Bennett, James T |
Publication | New York, NY, 1. Imprint: Copernicus
2. Springer New York, 2010. |
Description | VII, 200 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | From the race-to-space in the 1950s to the current furor over global warming, James Bennett traces the subtle and not-so-subtle ways in which government has co-opted scientific research and reinforced a culture in which challengers to proscribed wisdom are frozen out. Ripped from the headlines, Bennett offers a compelling, entertaining, and thought-provoking perspective on political influence in scientific research and its implications for a democratic society. Praise for The Doomsday Lobby "During the Nineteenth Century, almost entirely on private funding, American science grew from practically nothing to world class. Now, however, over fifty percent of American science is funded by the federal government. Dr. Bennett traces the path, "crisis" after "crisis," by which American science became practically an arm of the federal government. His tale is a cautionary one, warning against future "crisis mongers" who would extend the government's already majority control of American science even further. His warning is a timely one, and it should be heeded." Joseph P. Martino, author of Science Funding: Politics and Porkbarrel "Bennett's latest book offers a challenging interpretation of the rise of the American federal science establishment since World War II. Focusing primarily on the growth of the space program, Bennett argues that crisis, real or imagined, is the source of state power and state funding for science. The Doomsday Lobby offers what no doubt will be viewed as a controversial contribution to the history of American science policy, and more broadly to an understanding of the role of the state in society." James D. Savage, Professor of Politics, University of Virginia, and author of Funding Science in America James T. Bennett is Eminent Scholar and William P. Snavely Professor of Political Economy and Public Policy at George Mason University, and Director of The John M. Olin Institute for Employment Practice and Policy. He is the author or editor of over a dozen books, including Unhealthy Charities, The Politics of American Feminism, Stifling Political Competition, and Not Invited to the Party |

Title | E.T. Talk : How Will We Communicate with Intelligent Life on Other Worlds? |
Author(s) | Ballesteros, Fernando J |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer New York, 2010. |
Description | XIX, 212 p. 82 illus., 15 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | Although we have done extensive studies of the Solar System and thus far found over 300 extrasolar planets ??? planets outside our Solar System ??? we have not yet found life, even primitive life, on any planet other than Earth. Might there be life on some of these newly discovered extrasolar planets? Not likely, as most are gas giants or are too close or too far from their sun. However, of late we are finding more and more Earthlike planets. It is now estimated that about 15 percent of the planets in the galaxy are Earthlike, and many of these will likely orbit their suns at the right distance to support life as we know it. No one knows yet if radio searches or other means of detection will reveal that we are not alone in the universe. But if we do discover intelligent life elsewhere, how will we communicate with it? Are there some ???universal??? methods of communication we can use? Is music or mathematics a universal language? Are there alien intelligences right here on Earth we can use to help us figure out ways of communicating? The answers may surprise you. All of these issues and more are covered in this exciting, readable, and authoritative book on a subject that is not mere idle speculation anymore. We are certainly getting closer to finding out who, if anybody, is out there. This book will not only inform you about the search and the likelihood of finding life, it will also actually teach you how to talk to aliens! |

Title | How James Watt Invented the Copier : Forgotten Inventions of Our Great Scientists |
Author(s) | Schils, Ren?? |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer New York, 2012. |
Description | VII, 170 p. 98 illus., 17 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | Features 25 different scientists and the ideas which may not have made them famous, but made history??? Typically, we remember our greatest scientists from one single invention, one new formula or one incredible breakthrough. This narrow perspective does not give justice to the versatility of many scientists who also earned a reputation in other areas of science. James Watt, for instance, is known for inventing the steam engine, yet most people do not know that he also invented the copier. Alexander Graham Bell of course invented the telephone, but only few know that he invented artificial breathing equipment, a prototype of the ???iron lung???. Edmond Halley, whose name is associated with the comet that visits Earth every 75 years, produced the first mortality tables, used for life insurances. This entertaining book is aimed at anyone who enjoys reading about inventions and discoveries by the most creative minds. Detailed illustrations of the forgotten designs and ideas enrich the work throughout |

Title | Secrets of the Old One : Einstein, 1905 |
Author(s) | Bernstein, Jeremy |
Publication | New York, NY, 1. Imprint: Copernicus
2. Springer New York, 2006. |
Description | VIII, 200 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | In March 1905, at approximately eight week intervals, the Editor of the noted German physics journal, Annalen der Physik, received three hand-written manuscripts from a relatively unknown patent examiner in Bern, Switzerland. This patent examiner was the twenty-six year old Albert Einstein and the three papers would set the agenda for twentieth century physics. A fourth short paper was received in September 1905 and contained Einstein's derivation of the formula E=mc^2. These papers changed our lives in the twentieth century and beyond. While to a professional physicist the mathematics in these papers are quite straight forward, the ideas behind them are not. In fact, none of Einstein's contemporaries fully understood what he had done. In SECRETS OF THE OLD ONE: Einstein, 1905, renowned science writer Jeremy Bernstein makes these ideas accessible to a general reader with a limited background in mathematics. After reading this book, you will understand why 1905 is often designated as Einstein's miracle year |

Title | Thinking in Complexity : The Complex Dynamics of Matter, Mind, and Mankind |
Author(s) | Mainzer, Klaus |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1997. |
Description | XIV, 363 p. 166 illus : online resource |
Abstract Note | Since the second edition sold out again in less than one year, we now present the revised edition of Mainzer's popular book. The theory of nonlinear complex systems has become a successful problem-solving approach in the natural sciences from laser physics, quantum chaos, and meteorology to computer simulations of cell growth in biology. It is now recognized that many of our social, economic, ecological, and political problems are also of a global, complex, and nonlinear nature. And one of the most exciting contemporary topics is the idea that even the human mind is governed largely by the nonlinear dynamics of complex systems. Professor Mainzer, president of the German Society of Complex Systems and Nonlinear Dynamics, discusses, in a nontechnical language, the common framework behind these endeavors. The extended edition also analyzes the new applications of complex systems to materials science, nanotechnology, and artificial life |

Title | The Philosophy Behind Physics |
Author(s) | Brody, Thomas A;Pena, Luis de la;Hodgson, Peter E |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1993. |
Description | XII, 355 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | Thomas Brody had one of the most powerful and wide-ranging intellects of his generation. Although primarily a physicist who worked on statistical prob?? lems in nuclear physics, on probability theory and on computational physics he had an extensive knowledge of the philosophy of science and of philosophy, and was fluent in many languages. He is well-known among physicists for the Brody-Moshinsky transformation but his extensive work on probability and on the philosophy of science remained almost unknown. This was because the originality of his ideas entailed many lengthy battles with uncomprehending referees, and he frequently published in Mexican journals of limited circula?? tion. In addition, his strongly critical spirit inhibited his willingness to publish his ideas. He was always most concerned by the very unsatisfactory situation in the philosophy of physics, that is largely due to the generally poor knowledge that physicists and philosophers have of each other's disciplines. Philosophers of science write at length about physics without any detailed first-hand knowl?? edge of how research is actually carried out. Physicists, for their part, often implicitly assume naive or erroneous philosophical ideas, and this often hinders their scientific work, besides spreading further confusion if they try to give an account of what they are doing |
