Abstract Note | In this book are reported the main results presented at the "Fourth International Workshop on Data Analysis in Astronomy", held at the Ettore Majorana Center for Scientific Culture, Erice, Sicily, Italy, on April 12-19, 1991. The Workshop was preceded by three workshops on the same subject held in Erice in 1984, 1986 and 1988. The frrst workshop (Erice 1984) was dominated by presentations of "Systems for Data Analysis"; the main systems proposed were MIDAS, AlPS, RIAIP, and SAIA. Methodologies and image analysis topics were also presented with the emphasis on cluster analysis, multivariate analysis, bootstrap methods, time analysis, periodicity, 2D photometry, spectrometry, and data compression. A general presentation on "Parallel Processing" was made which encompassed new architectures, data structures and languages. The second workshop (Erice 1986) reviewed the "Data Handling Systems" planned for large major satellites and ground experiments (VLA, HST, ROSAT, COMPASS-COMPTEL). Data analysis methods applied to physical interpretation were mainly considered (cluster photometry, astronomical optical data compression, cluster analysis for pulsar light curves, coded aperture imaging). New parallel and vectorial machines were presented (cellular machines, PAPIA-machine, MPP-machine, vector computers in astronomy). Contributions in the field of artificial intelligence and planned applications to astronomy were also considered (expert systems, artificial intelligence in computer vision) |

Title | Supersymmetry and Trace Formulae : Chaos and Disorder |
Author(s) | Lerner, Igor V;Keating, Jonathan P;Khmelnitskii, David E |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer US, 1999. |
Description | IX, 404 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | The motion of a particle in a random potential in two or more dimensions is chaotic, and the trajectories in deterministically chaotic systems are effectively random. It is therefore no surprise that there are links between the quantum properties of disordered systems and those of simple chaotic systems. The question is, how deep do the connec?? tions go? And to what extent do the mathematical techniques designed to understand one problem lead to new insights into the other? The canonical problem in the theory of disordered mesoscopic systems is that of a particle moving in a random array of scatterers. The aim is to calculate the statistical properties of, for example, the quantum energy levels, wavefunctions, and conductance fluctuations by averaging over different arrays; that is, by averaging over an ensemble of different realizations of the random potential. In some regimes, corresponding to energy scales that are large compared to the mean level spacing, this can be done using diagrammatic perturbation theory. In others, where the discreteness of the quantum spectrum becomes important, such an approach fails. A more powerful method, devel?? oped by Efetov, involves representing correlation functions in terms of a supersymmetric nonlinear sigma-model. This applies over a wider range of energy scales, covering both the perturbative and non-perturbative regimes. It was proved using this method that energy level correlations in disordered systems coincide with those of random matrix theory when the dimensionless conductance tends to infinity |

Title | Effects of Radiation on Semiconductors |
Author(s) | Vavilov, Viktor S |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer US, 1965. |
Description | XI, 225 p. 1 illus : online resource |
Abstract Note | The effects of electromagnetic radiation and high-energy par?? ticles on semiconductors can be divided into two main processes: (a) the excitation of electrons (the special case is internal ioniza?? tion, i. e. , the generation of excess charge carriers); and(b) dis?? turbance of the periodic structure of the crystal, i. e. , the forma?? tion of "structural radiation defects. " Naturally, investigations of the effects of radiation on semiconductors cannot be considered in isolation. Thus, for example, the problern of "radiation de?? fects" is part of the generalproblern of crystal lattice defects and the influence of such defects on the processes occurring in semi?? conductors. The same is true of photoelectric and similar phe?? nomena where the action of the radiation is only the start of a complex chain of nonequilibrium electronprocesses. Nevertheless, particularly from the point of view of the experimental physicist, the radiation effects discussed in the present book have inter?? esting features: several types of radiation may produce the same resul t (for example, ionization by photons and by charged particles) or one type of radiation may produce several effects (ionization and radiation -defect formation). The aim of the author was to consider the most typical prob?? lems. The subjects discussed differ widely from one another in the extent to which they have been investigated |

Title | Theory of the Inhomogeneous Electron Gas |
Author(s) | Lundqvist, Stig;March, Norman H |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer US, 1983. |
Description | XIV, 396 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | The theory of the inhomogeneous electron gas had its origin in the Thomas?? Fermi statistical theory, which is discussed in the first chapter of this book. This already leads to significant physical results for the binding energies of atomic ions, though because it leaves out shell structure the results of such a theory cannot reflect the richness of the Periodic Table. Therefore, for a long time, the earlier method proposed by Hartree, in which each electron is assigned its own personal wave function and energy, dominated atomic theory. The extension of the Hartree theory by Fock, to include exchange, had its parallel in the density description when Dirac showed how to incorporate exchange in the Thomas-Fermi theory. Considerably later, in 1951, Slater, in an important paper, showed how a result similar to but not identical with that of Dirac followed as a simplification of the Hartree-Fock method. It was Gombas and other workers who recognized that one could also incorporate electron correlation consistently into the Thomas-Fermi-Dirac theory by using uniform electron gas relations locally, and progress had been made along all these avenues by the 1950s |

Title | Helium Cryogenics |
Author(s) | Van Sciver, Steven W |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer US, 1986. |
Description | XXII, 429 p. 39 illus : online resource |
Abstract Note | At least 10 years have elapsed since a comprehensive monograph concer?? ned with the broad subject of cryogenics has been published. During this time a considerable quantity of research and development has been carried out in the field of cryogenics. Furthermore, there has been a certain degree of redirection of effort within the field, mostly driven by the variety of new applications, ranging from superconductive magnet systems to micro?? electronics. Greater emphasis is now being placed on low-temperature cryogenics, particularly that of liquid helium. Until now cryogenic books have provided a broad survey of materials and fluid properties over the entire cryogenic regime, T ::5 150 K. This approach does not allow sufficient detail in any particular area to bring the reader to the current level of understanding in the subject. In addition, the behavior of helium has been lumped with that of other cryogenic fluids, although the properties of helium are quite unique. As a result, a clear relationship has not been established between the fundamental understanding of helium fluids and their potential applications. The present book has been written to fill this void. The approach is to survey the field of cryogenics, specifically as it pertains to helium fluids. This approach is more specialized than that contained in previous cryogenics books. Furthermore, the level of treatment is more advanced and a certain knowledge of fundamental engineering and physics principles has been assumed |

Title | Handbook of Marital Therapy: A Positive Approach to Helping Troubled Relationships |
Author(s) | Liberman, Robert P;Wheeler, Eugene G;de Visser, Louis A.J.M;Kuehnel, Julie;Kuehnel, Timothy |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer US, 1980. |
Description | XV, 262 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | In the treatment of marital problems, behaviorally oriented and com?? munication oriented approaches have been in conflict and seen as con?? trasting and unlikely bed partners. Many therapists, focusing on com?? munication skills, have felt that behaviorists were too structured and uncaring; on the other hand, behaviorists have considered humanistic therapists as being "touchy-feely," vague, and unfocused. However, in the Handbook of Marital Therapy, Liberman, Wheeler, de Visser, and the Kuehnels have wedded these two potent approaches into an inte?? grated framework that makes them loving bed partners. With over a decade of experience in applying behaviorally ori?? ented treatment to couples, Liberman and his co-authors have devel?? oped an educational model that focuses on teaching specific commu?? nication skills to couples. The communication skills they describe have been used extensively in all types of marital therapy, regardless of the therapist's theoretical orientation. The unique contribution of this book is that the authors provide a step-by-step approach to teaching these communication skills within a behavioral framework. Each chapter guides the therapist through the many issues and problems confronting him or her as a change agent. This highly readable book is enhanced by a liberal use of case exam?? ples. Emphasis is given to homework and structured sessions that focus on increasing specific communication skills in a sequential manner. The advantages of working with couples in a group setting are dis?? cussed, and concrete suggestions on how to manage these groups are clearly presented |

Title | Chaos : From Theory to Applications |
Author(s) | Tsonis, A.A |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer US, 1992. |
Description | XII, 274 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | Based on chaos theory two very important points are clear: (I) random?? looking aperiodic behavior may be the product of determinism, and (2) nonlinear problems should be treated as nonlinear problems and not as simplified linear problems. The theoretical aspects ofchaos have been presented in great detail in several excellent books published in the last five years or so. However, while the problems associated with applications of the theory-such as dimension and Lyapunov exponentsestimation, chaosand nonlinear pre?? diction, and noise reduction-have been discussed in workshops and ar?? ticles, they have not been presented in book form. This book has been prepared to fill this gap between theory and ap?? plicationsand to assist studentsand scientists wishingto apply ideas from the theory ofnonlinear dynamical systems to problems from their areas of interest. The book is intended to be used as a text for an upper-level undergraduate or graduate-level course, as well as a reference source for researchers. My philosophy behind writing this book was to keep it simple and informative without compromising accuracy. I have made an effort to presentthe conceptsby usingsimplesystemsand step-by-stepderivations. Anyone with an understanding ofbasic differential equations and matrix theory should follow the text without difficulty. The book was designed to be self-contained. When applicable, examples accompany the theory. The reader will notice, however, that in the later chapters specific examples become less frequent. This is purposely done in the hope that individuals will draw on their own ideas and research projects for examples |
