TitleAccretion of Extraterrestrial Matter Throughout Earth???s History
Author(s)Peucker-Ehrenbrink, Bernhard;Schmitz, Birger
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer US, 2001.
DescriptionXXVI, 466 p : online resource
Abstract NoteEvery year Earth is bombarded with about 40,000 tons of extraterrestrial material. This includes microscopic cosmic dust particles shed by comets and asteroids in outer space, meteorites, as well as large comets and asteroids that have led to catastrophic events in the geologic past. Originally considered only a curiosity, extraterrestrial matter found on Earth provides the only samples we have from comets, asteroids and other planets. Only recently mankind has started to actively collect extraterrestrial matter in space (Apollo program, Stardust mission) rather than to wait for its delivery to Earth. Still, most of our knowledge of the origin and evolution of our solar system is based on careful studies of meteorites, cosmic dust, and traces of large impact events in the geologic record such as the mass extinction that terminated the Cretaceous Period and led to the extinction of the dinosaurs. This book summarizes our current knowledge of the properties, origin, orbital evolution and accretion mechanism of extraterrestrial matter accreted on Earth and sheds light on accretion processes and fluxes in the geologic past. The chapters in the first part of the book are arranged in order to follow extraterrestrial matter from its origin in space, its orbital evolution on its way to Earth, its interaction with the Earth magnetosphere and atmosphere to its more or less violent collision with the Earth's surface. In the second part of the book several chapters deal with the present?day flux of cosmic dust and meteorites to Earth. Finally, several chapters deal with the reconstruction of the accretion history of extraterrestrial matter on Earth, starting with the most recent geologic past and ending with the very early, violent accretion period shortly after the formation of Earth, Moon and other solid planets in our solar system

TitleFrom Dirac to Neutrino Oscillations
Author(s)Ahrens, Tino
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer US, 2000.
DescriptionXV, 175 p : online resource
Abstract Note1bis text is meant to be a view of the quantum mechanical fonnalism as it develops with the successive introduction of different types oftransfonnations. In particular, it is meant to help the readers with three tasks: acquainting themselves with a general and direct approach to the quantum mechanics of spin?? one-half and spin-one particles, primarily leptons, photons and massive vector bosons, and to some extent quarks; finding out what some of the related areas of current research interest are; and, last and foremost, trying to understand the subject, beginning with and stressing the principles involved. The exposition is based on finite-dimensional representations of the homogeneous Lorentz group, and the subsequent introduction of gauge transformations, of the Abelian and non?? Abelian varieties. Reference to classical mechanics is avoided. Acting on the simple basis spinors and vectors, Lorentz transfonnations generate wave and field functions. Equations are obtained by the relativistic generalization of the addition of angular momenta, the wave or field functions being the solutions. For zero mass the equations may be obtained as the limits of the equations for the massive cases or by the application of the Euclidian group in two dimensions. The latter approach is illuminating in that it uncovers a loss in generality resulting from the former. Identifying momenta as eigenvalues of translations demonstrates covariance under the inhomogeneous Lorentz or Poincare group. Various representations of wave and field functions are given

TitleCMOS Imagers : From Phototransduction to Image Processing
Author(s)Yadid-Pecht, Orly;Etienne-Cummings, Ralph
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer US, 2004.
DescriptionXVI, 242 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe idea of writing a book on CMOS imaging has been brewing for several years. It was placed on a fast track after we agreed to organize a tutorial on CMOS sensors for the 2004 IEEE International Symposium on Circuits and Systems (ISCAS 2004). This tutorial defined the structure of the book, but as first time authors/editors, we had a lot to learn about the logistics of putting together information from multiple sources. Needless to say, it was a long road between the tutorial and the book, and it took more than a few months to complete. We hope that you will find our journey worthwhile and the collated information useful. The laboratories of the authors are located at many universities distributed around the world. Their unifying theme, however, is the advancement of knowledge for the development of systems for CMOS imaging and image processing. We hope that this book will highlight the ideas that have been pioneered by the authors, while providing a roadmap for new practitioners in this field to exploit exciting opportunities to integrate imaging and ???smartness??? on a single VLSI chip. The potential of these smart imaging systems is still unfulfilled. Hence, there is still plenty of research and development to be done

TitleCoherent Domain Optical Methods : Biomedical Diagnostics, Environment and Material Science
Author(s)Tuchin, Valery V
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer US, 2004.
DescriptioneReference : online resource
Abstract NoteFor the first time in one set of books, coherent-domain optical methods are discussed in the framework of various applications, which are characterized by a strong light scattering. A few chapters describe basic research containing the updated results on coherent and polarized light non-destructive interactions with a scattering medium, in particular, diffraction, interference, and speckle formation at multiple scattering. These chapters allow for understanding coherent-domain diagnostic techniques presented in later chapters. A large portion of Volume I is dedicated to analysis of various aspects of optical coherence tomography (OCT) - a very new and growing field of coherent optics. Two chapters on laser scanning confocal microscopy give insight to recent extraordinary results on in vivo imaging and compare the possibilities and achievements of confocol, excitation multiphoton, and OCT microscopy. This two volume reference contains descriptions of holography, interferometry and optical heterodyning techniques in their application for diagnostics of turbid materials. The most prospective methods of coherent and polarization optical imaging and spectroscopy, including polarization-sensitive optical coherent tomography, polarization diffusion wave spectroscopy, and elastic and quasi-elastic light scattering spectroscopies and image techniques, are presented. Handbook of Coherent Domain Optical Methods will be of interest to researchers, postgraduate and undergraduate students, laser engineers, biomedical engineers and physicians who are interested in the design and application of laser and coherent optical methods and instruments for medicine, material and environmental science

TitleThermal Conductivity : Theory, Properties, and Applications
Author(s)Tritt, Terry M
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer US, 2004.
DescriptionXXI, 290 p : online resource
Abstract NoteIt has been almost thirty years since the publication of a book that is entirely dedicated to the theory, description, characterization and measurement of the thermal conductivity of solids. The recent discovery of new materials which possess more complicated crystal structures and thus more complicated phonon scattering mechanisms have brought innovative challenges to the theory and experimental understanding of these new materials. With the development of new and novel solid materials and new measurement techniques, this book will serve as a current and extensive resource to the next generation researchers in the field of thermal conductivity. Professor Terry M. Tritt is considered a prominent researcher in the field of thermoelectric materials, in which he has worked over the last decade. Understanding the theoretical and experimental aspects of thermal conduction in new materials is the key to developing the next generation thermoelectric materials. Professor Tritt has edited seven books, authored several review articles, and over 120 scientific publications in his career. Terry M. Tritt, is Professor of Physics in the Department of Physics and Astronomy, Clemson University, South Carolina

TitleSemiconductor Materials : An Introduction to Basic Principles
Author(s)Yacobi, B.G
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer US, 2003.
DescriptionIX, 228 p. 37 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteThe technological progress is closely related to the developments of various materials and tools made of those materials. Even the different ages have been defined in relation to the materials used. Some of the major attributes of the present-day age (i.e., the electronic materials??? age) are such common tools as computers and fiber-optic telecommunication systems, in which semiconductor materials provide vital components for various mic- electronic and optoelectronic devices in applications such as computing, memory storage, and communication. The field of semiconductors encompasses a variety of disciplines. This book is not intended to provide a comprehensive description of a wide range of semiconductor properties or of a continually increasing number of the semiconductor device applications. Rather, the main purpose of this book is to provide an introductory perspective on the basic principles of semiconductor materials and their applications that are described in a relatively concise format in a single volume. Thus, this book should especially be suitable as an introductory text for a single course on semiconductor materials that may be taken by both undergraduate and graduate engineering students. This book should also be useful, as a concise reference on semiconductor materials, for researchers working in a wide variety of fields in physical and engineering sciences
