Title | Radio Astronomy : Small Radio Telescopes: Basics, Technology, and Observations |
Author(s) | Lauterbach, Thomas |
Publication | Wiesbaden, 1. Imprint: Springer
2. Springer Fachmedien Wiesbaden, 2022. |
Description | XIV, 55 p. 29 illus : online resource |
Abstract Note | Radio technology enables the extension of astronomical observations beyond light to other frequency ranges. This led to the discovery of numerous cosmic radio sources, the physical causes of which are explained, as is the operation of a radio telescope. Even small radio telescopes can observe radiation from the Sun and other radio sources, as well as 21-cm radiation from the Milky Way. Through interferometry, a much higher resolution can be achieved than with individual radio telescopes. As a result, radio astronomical research can contribute to many current questions in astronomy, cosmology, and physics. This Springer essential is a translation of the original German 1st edition essentials, Radioastronomie by Thomas Lauterbach, published by Springer Fachmedien Wiesbaden GmbH, part of Springer Nature in 2020. The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence (machine translation by the service DeepL.com). A subsequent human revision was done primarily in terms of content, so that the book will read stylistically differently from a conventional translation. Springer Nature works continuously to further the development of tools for the production of books and on the related technologies to support the authors. The Contents Brief outline of the history of radio astronomy and its discoveries. Electromagnetic waves Cosmic radio radiation How a radio telescope works Typical observations with a small radio telescope Interferometry, current research topics in radio astronomy and own entry into radio astronomy The Target Group Anyone who is looking for a compact introduction to radio astronomy, whether at universities, schools, observatories, or out of personal interest. The Author Thomas Lauterbach is professor of physics at the Nuremberg Institute of Technology (Technische Hochschule N??rnberg Georg Simon Ohm) and head of the radio astronomy special interest group of the Astronomical Society in the European Metropolitan Region Nuremberg |

Data science and artificial intelligence research nowadays one of the most important topics for the industry and the security sectors. The autonomy and counter-autonomy research topic are also very interesting. Autonomous cars have become a part of the common days, but their safe and secure application is not assured. The research results in this field want to support and assure safe and secure autonomous applications in our quotidian life. Also, the safe and secure robotics in the industries and the defence assure a high standard of living and the given research results in this area can use to increase it. The researchers work on it and publish the results that can be interesting for the other researchers and the innovators, but also the industrial part members. The researchers work on it and publish the results that can be interesting for the other researchers and the innovators, but also the industrial part members. Communication is a part of our life, but the communication systems mesh all around the world. Communication is the basis of modern life because without it life stop. One other interesting and very important research area is the material sciences. Virtual life cannot exist without hardware and materials. The new technical applications require new materials, that can suffice the mechanical and physical, chemical properties demand. Nowadays a common requirement of the materials the high strength and lightweight. Researchers want to serve the industrial requests and innovate new composite materials or increase the properties of the material through a new technological process. The authors publish the latest results of the security-related research area including the newest innovations and technologies which rise the interest of the defence and the modern industries even the interest of other researchers |

Title | Optical Nonlinearities in Nanostructured Systems |
Author(s) | Torres-Torres, Carlos;Garc??a-Beltr??n, Geselle |
Publication | Cham, 1. Imprint: Springer
2. Springer International Publishing, 2022. |
Description | XVII, 169 p. 47 illus., 46 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book provides readers with a detailed overview of second- and third-order nonlinearities in various nanostructures, as well as their potential applications. Interest in the field of nonlinear optics has grown exponentially in recent years and, as a result, there is increasing research on novel nonlinear phenomena and the development of nonlinear photonic devices. Thus, such a book serves as a comprehensive guide for researchers in the field and those seeking to become familiar with it. This text focuses on the nonlinear properties of nanostructured systems that arise as a result of optical wave mixing. The authors present a review of nonlinear optical processes on the nanoscale and provide theoretical descriptions for second and third-order optical nonlinearities in nanostructures such as carbon allotropes, metallic nanostructures, semiconductors, nanocrystals, and complex geometries. Here, the characterization and potential applications of these nanomaterials are also discussed. The factors that determine the nonlinear susceptibility in these systems are identified as well as the influence of physical mechanisms emerging from resonance and off-resonance excitations. In addition, the authors detail the effects driven by important phenomena such as quantum confinement, localized surface plasmon resonance, Fano resonances, bound states, and the Purcell effect on specific nanostructured systems. Readers are provided with a groundwork for future research as well as new perspectives in this growing field |

Title | The Secrets of Soviet Cosmonauts |
Author(s) | Menzio, Maria Rosa |
Publication | Cham, 1. Imprint: Springer
2. Springer International Publishing, 2022. |
Description | XIII, 219 p. 5 illus., 1 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book sheds new light on an amazing history, only partially known in the west: Russian cosmonautics and its spectacular record. From Laika, the cosmonaut dog, to Yuri Gagarin, the first man in space, to Valentina Tereshkova, the first woman in space, to the first spacewalk, the Soviets set many goals that they subsequently achieved. But there are shadows behind these headline moments, moments involving human loss, some of which are known, others only rumored. Questions remain, such as: ?? What was the ???flying coffin???? ?? What secrets are still hidden inside the Russian archives, despite two rounds of declassification? ?? Why didn???t Marina Popovich (???Madame Mig???) become a cosmonaut? ?? What problems made it necessary to film Valentina Tereshkova's return? ?? What (scientific) hypotheses exist concerning Gagarin's mysterious disappearance? The author addresses all of these issues, with help from the documents now available. This book will benefit a broad readership, from interested laypersons to graduate and undergraduate students to those who merely enjoy good history-based stories |

Title | Flux Pinning in Superconductors |
Author(s) | Matsushita, Teruo |
Publication | Cham, 1. Imprint: Springer
2. Springer International Publishing, 2022. |
Description | XVII, 493 p. 332 illus : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book covers the flux pinning mechanisms and properties and the electromagnetic phenomena caused by the flux pinning common for metallic, high-Tc and MgB2 superconductors. The condensation energy interaction known for normal precipitates or grain boundaries and the kinetic energy interaction proposed for artificial Nb pins in Nb-Ti, etc., are introduced for the pinning mechanism. Summation theories to derive the critical current density are discussed in detail. Irreversible magnetization and AC loss caused by the flux pinning are also discussed. The loss originally stems from the ohmic dissipation of normal electrons in the normal core driven by the electric field induced by the flux motion. The influence of the flux pinning on the vortex phase diagram in high Tc superconductors is discussed, and the dependencies of the irreversibility field are also described on other quantities such as anisotropy of superconductor, specimen size and electric field strength. Recent developments of critical current properties in various high-Tc superconductors and MgB2 are introduced. The 3rd edition has been thoroughly updated, with a new chapter on critical state model. The mechanism of irreversible properties is discussed in detail. The author provides calculations of pinning loss by the equation of motion of flux lines in the pinning potential and hysteresis loss. The readers will learn why the resultant loss is of hysteresis type in spite of such mechanism. This book aims for graduate students and researchers studying superconductivity as well as engineers working in electric utility industry |
