Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2011. |
Description | 119 p. 29 illus., 23 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | Europe???s networked societies of today are shaped by a growing interconnection in almost all areas of life. The complexity of our infrastructures and the concurrent accessibility to means of destruction by terrorist groups and individual perpetrators call for innovative security solutions. However, such evolving innovations inevitably raise fundamental questions of concern in our societies. How do we balance the imperatives of securing our citizens and infrastructures on the one hand, and of protecting of our sacredly held civil liberties on the other? The topical network ???Safety and Security??? of acatech ??? the German Academy of Science and Engineering ??? invited experts from the science academies of various European countries to share their perspectives on security research and the aspect of safety during a two-day workshop hosted by the Fraunhofer Institute for High-Speed Dynamics, Ernst-Mach-Institut in March 2010. This publication is a compilation of contributions made during the workshop |

Author(s) | Buonanno, Roberto |
Publication | Milano, Springer Milan, 2010. |
Description | XII, 228 pagg : online resource |

Author(s) | Curceanu, Catalina Oana |
Publication | Milano, Springer Milan, 2013. |
Description | XI, 322 pagg : online resource |

Title | Collective Phenomena in Synchrotron Radiation Sources : Prediction, Diagnostics, Countermeasures |
Author(s) | Khan, Shaukat |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2006. |
Description | X, 203 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book helps to dispel the notion that collective phenomena, which have become increasingly important in modern storage rings, are an obscure and inaccessible topic. Despite an emphasis on synchrotron light sources, the basic concepts presented here are valid for other facilities as well. Graduate students, scientists and engineers working in an accelerator environment will find this to be a systematic exposition of the principles behind collective instabilities and lifetime-limiting effects. Experimental methods to identify and characterize collective effects are also surveyed. Among other measures to improve the performance of a projected or existing facility, a detailed account of feedback control of instabilities is given |

Title | Computer Simulation and Data Analysis in Molecular Biology and Biophysics : An Introduction Using R |
Author(s) | Bloomfield, Victor |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer New York, 2009. |
Description | XVI, 321 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book provides an introduction, suitable for advanced undergraduates and beginning graduate students, to two important aspects of molecular biology and biophysics: computer simulation and data analysis. It introduces tools to enable readers to learn and use fundamental methods for constructing quantitative models of biological mechanisms, both deterministic and with some elements of randomness, including complex reaction equilibria and kinetics, population models, and regulation of metabolism and development; to understand how concepts of probability can help in explaining important features of DNA sequences; and to apply a useful set of statistical methods to analysis of experimental data from spectroscopic, genomic, and proteomic sources. These quantitative tools are implemented using the free, open source software program R. R provides an excellent environment for general numerical and statistical computing and graphics, with capabilities similar to Matlab??. Since R is increasingly used in bioinformatics applications such as the BioConductor project, it can serve students as their basic quantitative, statistical, and graphics tool as they develop their careers |

Title | From Fossils to Astrobiology : Records of Life on Earth and the Search for Extraterrestrial Biosignatures |
Author(s) | Seckbach, Joseph;Walsh, Maud |
Publication | Dordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 2008. |
Description | XXXVI, 546 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | From Fossils to Astrobiology reviews developments in paleontology and geobiology that relate to the rapidly-developing field of Astrobiology, the study of life in the Universe. Many traditional areas of scientific study, including astronomy, chemistry and planetary science, contribute to Astrobiology, but the study of the record of life on planet Earth is critical in guiding investigations in the rest of the cosmos. In this varied book, expert scientists from 15 countries present peer-reviewed, stimulating reviews of paleontological and astrobiological studies. The overviews of established and emerging techniques for studying modern and ancient microorganisms on Earth and beyond, will be valuable guides to evaluating biosignatures which could be found in the extraterrestrial surface or subsurface within the Solar System and beyond. This volume also provides discussion on the controversial reports of "nanobacteria" in the Martian meteorite ALH84001. It is a unique volume among Astrobiology monographs in focusing on fossil evidence from the geological record and will be valuable to students and researchers alike |

Title | Wrong for the Right Reasons |
Author(s) | Buchwald, Jed Z;Franklin, A |
Publication | Dordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 2005. |
Description | VIII, 230 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | The rapidity with which knowledge changes makes much of past science obsolete, and often just wrong, from the present's point of view. We no longer think, for example, that heat is a material substance transferred from hot to cold bodies. But is wrong science always or even usually bad science? The essays in this volume argue by example that much of the past's rejected science, wrong in retrospect though it may be - and sometimes markedly so - was nevertheless sound and exemplary of enduring standards that transcend the particularities of culture and locale |

Title | Distant Worlds : Milestones in Planetary Exploration |
Author(s) | Bond, Peter |
Publication | New York, NY, 1. Imprint: Copernicus
2. Springer New York, 2007. |
Description | X, 324 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | Peter Bond provides an overview of key, unmanned missions, chapter by chapter, to planets in the twentieth century. He tells the story of the mission planners and engineers who, working mostly in the background, made these unprecedented achievements in scientific exploration possible. Bond???s perspective provides a much-needed overview, but it also details the very human feelings that animated the intense rivalries between the Soviet Union and the United States, and most recently the difficulties that arose in collaborations between NASA and ESA on the Rosetta and Halley's Comet missions |

Title | Exploring the Cosmic Frontier : Astrophysical Instruments for the 21st Century |
Author(s) | Lobanov, A.P;Zensus, J.A;Cesarsky, C;Diamond, Ph |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2007. |
Description | XXIV, 246 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | In the coming decades, astrophysical science will benefit enormously from the construction and operation of several major international ground- and space based facilities, such as ALMA, Herschel/Planck, and SKA in the far infrared to radio band, Extremely Large Telescopes, JWST and GAIA in the optical to near infrared regime, XEUS and Constellation-X in the X-ray, and GLAST in the Gamma-ray regime. These and other new instruments will have a major impact in a wide range of scientific topics including the cosmological epoch of reionization, galactic dynamics and nuclear activity, stellar astronomy, extra-solar planets, gamma-ray bursts, X-ray binaries, and many others. On May 18-21, 2004, the Max-Planck-Society???s Harnack-Haus in Dahlem, Berlin hosted the international symposium "Exploring the Cosmic Frontier: Astrophysical Instruments for the 21st Century". The symposium in Berlin was dedicated to exploring the complementarity and synergies between different branches of astrophysical research, by presenting and discussing the fundamental scientific problems that will be addressed by major future astrophysical facilities in the next few decades. This book contains 70 papers from the meeting and is intended to give a lasting account of a snapshot of an evolving scientific discourse and interaction throughout our field of research |
