Title | The Machine as Metaphor and Tool |
Author(s) | Haken, Hermann;Karlqvist, Anders;Svedin, Uno |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1993. |
Description | IX, 165 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | The chapters in this book centre around one main theme, the concept of the machine and its use as metaphor in a variety of contexts. This concept is deeply rooted in western culture and is frequently used to interpret complex systems in nature and society. With the advent of electronic computers, the machine metaphor applied to thinking and the brain has becOIne even more pertinent. The idea of a machine has changed over time. In this book these transformations are made trans?? parent, various aspects of the machine metaphor are discussed and limitations and pitfalls of the metaphor are elaborated. The chapters are written in a non-technical fashion and are accessible to a large readership of scientists and also laymen interested in the scientific per?? spectives and logical foundations of the machine concept that has been so influential in western thinking. The idea of the book has its origin in a workshop held at the Sci?? entific Station in Abisko, Sweden, in May 1990, where several of the present authors participated. The meeting was organized and spon?? sored by the Swedish Council for Planning and Coordination of Re?? search (FRN). Since 1983, the FRN has actively promoted a series of such annual events at Abisko, all of which have been devoted to the exploration of various aspects of complex systems and their evolution |

Title | The Study of Time : Proceedings of the First Conference of the International Society for the Study of Time Oberwolfach (Black Forest) ??? West Germany |
Author(s) | Fraser, J. T;Haber, F. C;M??ller, G. H |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1972. |
Description | VIII, 550 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | The First Conference of the International Society for the Study of Time was held at the Mathematisches Forschungsinstitut at Oberwolfach in the Black Forest, Federal Republic of Germany from Sunday, 31 August to Saturday, 6 September, 1969. The origin of this conference and the formation of the Society goes back to a proposal due to J. T. Fraser that was discussed at a conference on "Interdisciplinary Perspectives of Time" held by the New York Academy of Sciences in January, 1966. It was unanimously agreed than that an international society should be formed on an interdisciplinary basis with the object of stimulating interest in all problems concerning 'time and that this object could best be attained by means of conferences held at regular intervals. J. T. Fraser was elected Secretary, S. Watanabe Treasurer, and I was elected President. It was agreed, at my suggestion, that the organization of the first conference of the newly formed Society be left to a committee of these three officers, on the understanding that they would invite authorities on the role of time in the various special sciences and humanities to form an Advisory Board to assist them. One of the main difficulties in seeking support for an interdisciplinary conference is that most foundations confine their interest exclusively either to the sciences or to the humanities |

Title | Science and Synthesis : An International Colloquium organized by Unesco on the Tenth Anniversary of the Death of Albert Einstein and Teilhard de Chardin |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1967. |
Description | XVI, 208 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | This volume is a collection of the lectures and discussions at an international colloquium organized by Unesco on the theme of Science and Synthesis to mark the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the death of both Einstein and Teilhard de Chardin, also the 50th anniversary of the theory of general relativity. Despite the great gulf which lies between the work of Einstein and Teilhard de Chardin, the coincidence in the dates provided an opportunity to examine the urge towards a synthesis of the scientific and philosophical approaches which lies at the very heart of the work of these two great men. It was, indeed, their common desire for an all-embracing concept of the universe which led them both to try to construct a cosmology for the modern world. So it seemed that the best way of honoring Einstein and Teilhard de Chardin was to arrange a free discussion of the current likelihood of effecting a syn?? thesis of scientific knowledge which would bring together some of today's most eminent scholars, inspired by the wish to make their research more meaningful by philosophic reflection. The resulting give and take of ideas would go far beyond mere commemoration; it would bring their ideas to life by setting them against the present state of science |

Title | Laser Processing and Analysis of Materials |
Author(s) | Duley, Walter W |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer US, 1983. |
Description | XIV, 464 p. 86 illus : online resource |
Abstract Note | It has often been said that the laser is a solution searching for a problem. The rapid development of laser technology over the past dozen years has led to the availability of reliable, industrially rated laser sources with a wide variety of output characteristics. This, in turn, has resulted in new laser applications as the laser becomes a familiar processing and analytical tool. The field of materials science, in particular, has become a fertile one for new laser applications. Laser annealing, alloying, cladding, and heat treating were all but unknown 10 years ago. Today, each is a separate, dynamic field of research activity with many of the early laboratory experiments resulting in the development of new industrial processing techniques using laser technology. Ten years ago, chemical processing was in its infancy awaiting, primarily, the development of reliable tunable laser sources. Now, with tunability over the entire spectrum from the vacuum ultraviolet to the far infrared, photo?? chemistry is undergoing revolutionary changes with several proven and many promising commercial laser processing operations as the result. The ability of laser sources to project a probing beam of light into remote or hostile environments has led to the development of a wide variety of new analytical techniques in environmental and laboratory analysis. Many of these are reviewed in this book |

Title | Atomic and Nuclear Physics : An Introduction |
Author(s) | Littlefield, Thomas Albert |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer US, 1979. |
Description | XV, 487 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | After the death of Dr. Littlefield it was decided that I should undertake the revision ofthe whole of Atomic and Nuclear Physics: an Introduction for the third edition, and it was soon apparent that major changes were necessary. I am confident that these changes would have had Dr. Littlefield's approval. The prime consideration for the present edition has been to modernize at a minimum cost. As much as possible of the second edition has therefore been retained, but where changes have been made they have been fairly drastic. Thus the chapters on fine structure, wave mechanics, the vector model of the atom, Pauli's principle and the Zeeman effect have been completely restructured. The chapters on nuclear models, cosmic rays, fusion systems and fundamental particles have been brought up to date while a new chapter on charm and the latest ideas on quarks has been included. It is hoped that the presentation of the last named will give readers a feeling that physics research can be full of adventure and surprises |
