Title | Cataclysmic Variables and Related Objects : Proceedings of the 158th Colloquium of the International Astronomical Union, Held at Keele, United Kingdom, June 26???30, 1995 |
Author(s) | Evans, A;Wood, Janet H |
Publication | Dordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1996. |
Description | XVI, 490 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | In 1993 we began to consider the possibility of holding a conference on Catacysmic Variables (CVs) at Keele University. There have been several meetings in the area of CVs recently (e. g. Eilat, Abano-Padova, Capetown). However as preparations for the Keele meeting progressed we realized that, while there had been a number of IAU meetings devoted to related and to peripheral topics (such as IAU Colloquium 122 on Classical Novae in 1989, IAU Colloquium 129 on Accretion Disks in 1990), there had been no IAU-sponsored conferences in the area of cataclysmi/: variables (CVs) for a number of years. We felt therefore that the time was ripe to have an IAU meeting de?? voted to an overview of CVs and related objects and the SOC organized the conference such that there was an emphasis on invited reviews of the most recent advances in the field. The conference covered both CVs and LMXBs and the inter-relations between them. The meeting was held at a time when powerful satellite observatories, and rapid improvements in ground based instrumentation, had led to many advances in both CV and LMXB research. The conference provided a forum to review observations from ASCA, EUVE, ROSAT, Ginga and the recently-refurbished HST. Photo?? metric, spectroscopic and polarimetric observations of CVs and LMXBs have thrown new light on the distribution of matter and the nature of the stellar components in these systems |

Title | Large Scale Structure and Motions in the Universe : Proceeding of an International Meeting Held in Trieste, Italy, April 6???9, 1988 |
Author(s) | Mezzetti, Marino;Giuricin, G;Mardirossian, F;Ramella, M |
Publication | Dordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1989. |
Description | 500 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | The 1980's have been times of great excitement in Astrophysics and Cosmology. Professors Dennis Sciama and Fabio Mardirossian and all the other Members of the Organizing Committees are to be congratulated for having given us a taste of this excitement in Trieste, by inviting the leaders of the subject to the meeting they have organized. The excitement has corne from the new observations of the three-dimensional structure of the universe through a large number of new measurements of redshifts. These have revealed that clusters of galaxies are distributed on the surface of big empty bubbles of diameters of the order of 20-50 Mpc. Additionally, there is some evidence for invisible dark matter (whose composition is not known) as well as evidence for the gravitational lens effect. To cap this has corne the supernova of 1987, an event which last occurred 383 years ago. For the first time in history, the neutrino flux from the supernova was measured, giving limits to neutrino masses and numbers of neutrino types. (The dark matter problem is related to Particle Physics - beyond this standard model). It is good to be alive when all this happens and to try to comprehend this. Once again, our appreciation to the organisers and to those who presented their beautiful results |

Title | The New Cosmos |
Author(s) | Uns??ld, A;Baschek, B |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer New York, 1983. |
Description | XIV, 479 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | to the Second Edition The development of astronomy in the last ten years has been nothing short of explosive. This second edition of The New Cosmos, considerably revised and enlarged, tries to share this development with its readers. Let us mention a few key words: from mo on landings, planetary probes, aild continental drift through pulsars, X-ray and y-ray sources, interstellar molecules, quasars, and the structure and evolution of stars and stellar systems right up to cosmological models. As before, the most important task of this book is to give a not too difficult introduction to present-day astronomy and astrophysics, both to the student of astronomy and to the specialist from a neighboring discipline. We therefore draw to the attention of the reader, as an essential part of our description, the numerous illustrations-many of them new-and their detailed captions. As far as possible we link a description of important observations with basic features of the theory. On the other hand, when it comes to detail we often content ourselves with abrief description, leaving the detailed explanation to the specialist literature. The transition to the specialist literature should be eased by the Bibliography at the end of the book. Important new investigations are noted in the text by their year, not so much for historical reasons as to enable the original work to be found in the Astronomy and Astrophysics Abstracts (1969 on) |

Title | The New Cosmos |
Author(s) | Uns??ld, A |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer New York, 1969. |
Description | XII, 374 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book may serve to present the modern view of the universe to a large number of readers whose over-full professional commit?? ments leave them no time for the study of larger monographs ... Such a book should not be too compendious. Accordingly, the author has been at pains to allow the leading ideas of the various domains of astronomical investigation to stand out plainly in their scientific and historical settings; the introductory chapters of the three parts of the book ... , in the framework of historical surveys, should assist the general review. With that in mind, the title was chosen following Alexander von Humboldt's well known book "Kosmos, Entwurf einer physischen Weltbeschreibung" (1827-1859). On the other hand, particular results - which admittedly first lend colour to the picture - are often simply stated without attempting any thorough justification. The reader seeking further information will find guidance in the Bibliography. This makes no pretentions to completeness or historical balance. References in the text or in captions for the figures, by quoting authors and years, make it possible for the reader to trace the relevant publications through the standard abstracting journals. I wish to thank my colleagues V. WEIDEMANN, E. RICHTER and B. BASCHEK for their critical reading of the book and for much helpful counsel, and H. HOLWEGER for his tireless collaboration with the proofs. Similarly, my thanks are due to Miss ANTJE WAGNER for the careful preparation of the typescript |

Title | Mass Loss from Red Giants : Proceedings of a Conference held at the University of California at Los Angeles, U.S.A., June 20???21, 1984 |
Author(s) | Morris, Mark;Zuckerman, Arie J |
Publication | Dordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1985. |
Description | XVI, 320 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | Red giant and supergiant stars have long been favorites of professional 6 and amateur astronomers. These enormous stars emit up to 10 times more energy than the Sun and, so, are easy to study. Some of them, specifically the pulsating long-period variables, significantly change their size, brightness, and color within about a year, a time scale of interest to a single human being. Some aspects of the study of red giant stars are similar to the study of pre-main-sequence stars. For example, optical astronomy gives us a tantalizing glimpse of star forming regions but to really investi?? gate young stars and protostars requires infrared and radio astronomy. The same is true of post-main-sequence stars that are losing mass. Optical astronomers can measure the atomic component of winds from red giant stars that are undergoing mass loss at modest rates 6 (M $ 10- M9/yr.). But to see dust grains and molecules properly, 5 especially in stars with truly large mass loss rates, ~ 10- M9/yr, one requires IR and radio astronomy. As this stage of copious mass loss only lasts for ~105 years one might be tempted to ask, "who cares?" |

Title | The Impact of Long-Term Monitoring on Variable Star Research : Astrophysics, Instrumentation, Data Handling, Archiving |
Author(s) | Sterken, C;de Groot, Mart |
Publication | Dordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1994. |
Description | XVI, 457 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | Long-term monitoring is of fundamental significance in solving many important problems in astrophysics and, furthermore, has unequalled value in extending observational runs with small telescopes for the education of young astronomers in order to teach them how to secure high-quality observational data over many years. The Impact of Long-Term Monitoring on Variable Star Research contains reports based on the analysis of data collected in the visible, IR and radio measurement ranges, as well as the design and history of well known photometric systems. Though the reporting of novel results forms an important part of the book, there are also reports of eight discussion sessions covering more general areas, such as extinction monitoring, the problems of archival storage of astronomical data, service observation, the role played by long-term monitoring in graduate teaching and thesis supervision, the interplay between the great observational effort and theory, the contribution of LTM to new knowledge of fundamental data, and the increasing decommissioning of telescopes of modest aperture |
