TitleEconophysics and Sociophysics: Recent Progress and Future Directions
Author(s)Frederic Abergel (ed.);Hideaki Aoyama (ed.);Bikas K. Chakrabarti (ed.);Anirban Chakraborti (ed.);Deo, Nivedita;Raina, Dhruv;Vodenska, Irena
PublicationCham 2017.
DescriptionVIII, 256 p. 85 illus., 77 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book presents the proceedings from ECONOPHYS-2015, an international workshop held in New Delhi, India, on the interrelated fields of "econophysics" and "sociophysics", which have emerged from the application of statistical physics to economics and sociology. Leading researchers from varied communities, including economists, sociologists, financial analysts, mathematicians, physicists, statisticians, and others, report on their recent work, discuss topical issues, and review the relevant contemporary literature. A society can be described as a group of people who inhabit the same geographical or social territory and are mutually involved through their shared participation in different aspects of life. It is possible to observe and characterize average behaviors of members of a society, an example being voting behavior. Moreover, the dynamic nature of interaction within any economic sector comprising numerous cooperatively interacting agents has many features in common with the interacting systems of statistical physics. It is on these bases that interest has grown in the application within sociology and economics of the tools of statistical mechanics. This book will be of value for all with an interest in this flourishing field

TitleInformation Handling in Astronomy
Author(s)Heck, Andre
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 2000.
DescriptionX, 242 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe pilot boat just moved away and'its lights are already fading towards the coast of Northeastern Queensland over which Saturn is going to set. There is still quite some time to go before dawn. The big ship has now regained her cruise speed following its roughly northwesterly route in the South Coral Sea along the chain of nearby reefs. Few people are around at this time, except a dozen early birds sharing some 'shipshaping' exercise on the top deck and taking advantage of the relative coolness of the night. On my way down to the stateroom, I cannot but stop once more in front of that elegant composition by British artist Brigid Collins (1963-) hanging in the monumental staircase between Decks 7 and 8. That piece 2 of art, a 1.8x 1.8m oil on canvas plus collage entitled Berinl in honour of the Danish explorer, gathers together many navigation-related themes of the time: Suns, Moons, planets, sky maps, astrolabes, small telescopes, as well as drawings, diagrams and charts of all kinds. It is somehow a digest of how astronomical information was then collected, made available, and used

TitleProbability, Statistical Optics, and Data Testing : A Problem Solving Approach
Author(s)Frieden, Roy
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2001.
DescriptionXXIV, 494 p. 20 illus., 1 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteScientists in optics are increasingly confronted with problems that are of a random nature and that require a working knowledge of probability and statistics for their solution. This textbook develops these subjects within the context of optics using a problem-solving approach. All methods are explicitly derived and can be traced back to three simple axioms given at the outset. Students with some previous exposure to Fourier optics or linear theory will find the material particularly absorbing and easy to understand. This third edition contains many new applications to optical and physical phenomena. This includes a method of estimating probability laws exactly, by regarding them as laws of physics to be determined using a new variational principle

TitleEmpirical Science of Financial Fluctuations : The Advent of Econophysics
Author(s)Takayasu, Hideki
PublicationTokyo, Springer Japan, 2002.
DescriptionX, 352 p : online resource
Abstract NoteFinancial fluctuations were generally neglected in classical ecnomics and their basic statistical properties have only recently been elucidated in the emerging field of econophysics, a new science that analyzes data using methods developed by statistical physics, such as chaos, fractals, and phase transitions. This volume is the proceedings of a workshop at which leading international researchers in this discipline discussed their most recent results and examined the validity of the empirical laws of econophysics. Topics include stock market prices and foreign exchange rates, income distribution, market anomalies, and risk management. The papers herein relate econophysics to other models, present new models, and illustrate the mechanisms by which financial fluctuations occur using actual financial data. Containing the most recent econophysics results, this volume will serve as an indispensable reference for economic theorists and practitioners alike

TitleThe Science of Disasters : Climate Disruptions, Heart Attacks, and Market Crashes
Author(s)Bunde, Armin;Kropp, J??rgen;Schellnhuber, Hans-Joachim
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2002.
DescriptionXX, 453 p : online resource
Abstract NoteAre there universal laws governing the persistence of weather, and is it possible to predict climate transitions as generated by natural or man-made perturbations? How can one quantify the roller-coaster dynamics of stock markets and anticipate mega-crashes? Can we diagnose the health condition of patients from heartbeat time-series analysis which may even form the basis for infarct prevention? This book tackles these questions by applying advanced methods from statistical physics and related fields to all types of non-linear dynamics prone to disaster. The transdisciplinary analysis is organized in some dozen review articles written by world-class scientists

TitleAsteroseismology Across the HR Diagram : Proceedings of the Asteroseismology Workshop Porto, Portugal 1???5 July 2002
Author(s)Thompson, Michael J;Cunha, Margarida S;Monteiro, M??rio J.P.F.G
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 2003.
DescriptionXVIII, 294 p : online resource
Abstract NoteWe stand at the threshold of an exciting era of Asteroseismology. In a few months' time, the Canadian small-satellite asteroseismology mission MOST will be laun?? ched. Danish and French missions MONS and COROT should follow, with the ESA mission Eddington following in 2007/8. Helioseismology has proved spec?? tacularly successful in imaging the internal structure and dynamics of the Sun and probing the physics of the solar interior. Ground-based observations have detected solar-like oscillations on alpha Centauri A and other Sun-like stars, and diagnostics similar to those used in helioseismology are now being used to test and constrain the physics and evolutionary state of these stars. Multi-mode oscillations are being observed in an abundance of other stars, including slowly pulsating B stars (SPB stars), delta Scuti stars, Ap stars and the pulsating white dwarfs. New classes of pulsators continue to be discovered across the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram. For good reason it was decided to entitle our conference 'Asteroseismology Across the HR Diagram' . Yet the challenges still to be faced to make asteroseismology across the HR diagram a reality are formidable. Observation, data analysis and theory all pose hard problems to be overcome. In conceiving this meeting, the aim of the organisers was to facilitate a cross-fertilization of ideas and approaches between researchers working on different pulsators and with different areas of expertise. We venture to suggest that in this the conference was a great success

TitleStatistical Physics : An Advanced Approach with Applications Web-enhanced with Problems and Solutions
Author(s)Honerkamp, Josef
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2002.
DescriptionXIV, 517 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe application of statistical methods to physics is essential. This unique book on statistical physics offers an advanced approach with numerous applications to the modern problems students are confronted with. Therefore the text contains more concepts and methods in statistics than the student would need for statistical mechanics alone. Methods from mathematical statistics and stochastics for the analysis of data are discussed as well. The book is divided into two parts, focusing first on the modeling of statistical systems and then on the analysis of these systems. Problems with hints for solution help the students to deepen their knowledge. The second edition has been updated and enlarged with new material on estimators based on a probability distribution for the parameters, identification of stochastic models from observations, and statistical tests and classification methods (Chaps. 10-12). Moreover, a customized set of problems with solutions is accessible on the Web. The author teaches and conducts research on stochastic dynamical systems at the University of Freiburg, Germany

TitleBayesian Inference : Parameter Estimation and Decisions
Author(s)Harney, Hanns L
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2003.
DescriptionXIII, 263 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe book provides a generalization of Gaussian error intervals to situations where the data follow non-Gaussian distributions. This usually occurs in frontier science, where the observed parameter is just above background or the histogram of multiparametric data contains empty bins. Then the validity of a theory cannot be decided by the chi-squared-criterion, but this long-standing problem is solved here. The book is based on Bayes' theorem, symmetry and differential geometry. In addition to solutions of practical problems, the text provides an epistemic insight: The logic of quantum mechanics is obtained as the logic of unbiased inference from counting data. However, no knowledge of quantum mechanics is required. The text, examples and exercises are written at an introductory level

TitleThe Statistical Mechanics of Financial Markets
Author(s)Voit, Johannes
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2001.
DescriptionXII, 220 p. 22 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteFrom the reviews - "Provides an excellent introduction for physicists interested in the statistical properties of financial markets. Appropriately early in the book the basic financial terms such as shorts, limit orders, puts, calls, and other terms are clearly defined. Examples, often with graphs, augment the reader???s understanding of what may be a plethora of new terms and ideas??? [This is] an excellent starting point for the physicist interested in the subject. Some of the book???s strongest features are its careful definitions, it detailed examples, and the connection it establishes to physical systems." PHYSICS TODAY, August 2002 "This book is excellent at illustrating the similarities of financial markets with other non-equilibrium physical systems. [...] In summary, a very good book that offers more than just qualitative comparisons of physics and finance." (www.quantnotes.com) This textbook describes parallels between statistical physics and finance - both those established in the 100-year-long interaction between these disciplines, as well as new research results on capital markets. The random walk, well known in physics, is also the basic model in finance, upon which are built, for example, the Black-Scholes theory of option pricing and hedging, or methods of risk control using diversification. Here the underlying assumptions are discussed using empirical financial data and analogies to physical models such as fluid flows, turbulence, or superdiffusion. On this basis, new theories of derivative pricing and risk control can be formulated. Computer simulations of interacting agent models of financial markets provide insights into the origins of asset price fluctuations. Stock exchange crashes can be modelled in ways analogous to phase transitions and earthquakes. These models allow for predictions. This study edition has been updated with a presentation of several new and significant developments, e.g. the dynamics of volatility smiles and implied volatility surfaces, path integral approaches to option pricing, a new and accurate simulation scheme for options, multifractals, the application of nonextensive statistical mechanics to financial markets, and the minority game
