Description | XIV, 676 p. 110 illus : online resource |
Abstract Note | The first Nato Advanced Studies Institute entirely devoted to density functional theory was held in Portugal in September 1983. The proceedings of this School, publis?? hed in early 1985, is still used as a standard reference covering the basic development of the theory and applications in atomic, molecular, solid state and nuclear physics. Ho?? wever, astonishing progress has been achieved in the intervening years: The foundations of the theory have been extended to cover excited states and time dependent problems more fully, density functional theory of classical liquids and superconducting systems has been addressed and extensions to relativistic, that is, field theoretical systems, as well as a more thorough discussion of magnetic field problems have been presented. In addition, new functionals have been devised, for instance under the heading of ge?? neralised gradient expansions, and the number of applications in the traditional fields has steadily increased, in particular in chemistry. Applications in new fields, as for instance the structure of atomic clusters and the marriage of density functional theory with molecular dynamics and simulated annealing, have provided additional impetus to the field of density functional theory |

Title | Nonlinear Evolution of Spatio-Temporal Structures in Dissipative Continuous Systems |
Author(s) | Busse, F.H;Kramer, L |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer US, 1990. |
Description | XII, 569 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | This volume contains papers contributed to the NATO Advanced Research Workshop "Nonlinear Evolution of Spatio-Temporal Structures in Dissipative Continuous Systems" held in Streitberg, Fed. Rep. Germany, Sept. 24 through 30, 1989. The purpose of the rather long title has been to focus attention on a particularly fruitful direction of research within the broad field covered by terms like Nonlinear Dynamics or Non-Equilibrium Systems. After physicists have been occupied for several decades mainly with the microscopic structure of matter, recent years have witnessed a resurgence of interest in macroscopic patterns and dynamics. Research on these latter phenomena has not been dormant, of course, since fluid dynamicists interested in the origin of turbulence, meteorologists studying weather patterns and numerous other scientists have continued to advance the understanding of the structures relevant to their disciplines. The recent progress in the dynamics of nonl inear systems wi th few degrees of freedom and the discovery of universal laws such as the Feigenbaum scaling of period-doubling cascades has given rise to new hopes for the understanding of common principles underlying the spontaneous formation of structures in extended continuous systems |

Title | Electron Collisions with Molecules, Clusters, and Surfaces |
Author(s) | Ehrhardt, H;Morgan, L.A |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer US, 1994. |
Description | VIII, 264 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | This volume contains the invited papers and selected contributed papers presented at the biennial International Symposium on ELECTRON COLLISIONS WITH MOLECULES, CLUSTERS AND SURF ACES held at Royal Holloway, University of London from 29th to 30th July, 1993. This Symposium was a Satellite Meeting of the XVIII International Conference on the Physics of Electronic and Atomic Collisions (ICPEAC) and follows a 16 year tradition of Satellite Conferences in related areas of collisions held in association with previous ICPEAC's. In the past each of these electron -molecule symposia covered the broad field of electron-molecule scattering at rather low energies, but also included hot topics. This time as well as covering the whole field, well defined electron collisions with clusters and with particles in the complex potential of a surface were emphasized. Not many details are known about such collisions, although they become more and more important in surface characterisation, plasma-wall interactions, electron induced desorption and reorganisation of adsorbed particles. Recently, much work, theoretical and experimental, has been devoted to electron collisions with rather large carbon, silicon and halogen containing molecules. These problems are of relevance in plasma assisted thin film formation and etching of surfaces and can now be approached with advanced theoretical methods and experimental equipment |

Title | Amorphous Solids and the Liquid State |
Author(s) | March, Norman H;Street, Robert A;Tosi, Mario P |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer US, 1985. |
Description | XX, 540 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book has its origins in the 1982 Spring College held at the Interna?? tional Centre for Theoretical Physics, Miramare, Trieste. The primary aim is to give a broad coverage of liquids and amorphous solids, at a level suitable for graduate students and research workers in condensed-matter physics, physical chemistry, and materials science. The book is intended for experimental workers with interests in the basic theory. While the topics covered are many, it was planned to place special emphasis on both static structure and dynamics, including electronic transport. This emphasis is evident from the rather complete coverage of the determination of static structure from both diffraction experiments and, for amorphous solids especially, from model building. The theory of the structure of liquids and liquid mixtures is then dealt with from the standpoint of, first, basic statistical mechanics and, subsequently, pair potentials constructed from the electron theory of simple metals and their alloys. The discussion of static structure is completed in two chapters with rather different emphases on liquid surfaces and interfaces. The first deals with the basic statistical mechanics of neutral and charged interfaces, while the second is concerned with solvation and double-layer effects. Dynamic structure is introduced by a comprehensive discussion of single-particle motion in liquids. This is followed by the structure and dynamics of charged fluids, where again much basic statistical mechanics is developed |

Title | The Global Geometry of Turbulence : Impact of Nonlinear Dynamics |
Author(s) | Jim??nez, Javier |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer US, 1991. |
Description | XIII, 372 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | The aim of this Advanced Research Workshop was to bring together Physicists, Applied Mathematicians and Fluid Dynamicists, including very specially experimentalists, to review the available knowledge on the global structural aspects of turbulent flows, with an especial emphasis on open systems, and to try to reach a consensus on their possible relationship to recent advances in the understanding of the behaviour of low dimensional dynamical systems and amplitude equations. A lot has been learned during recent years on the non-equilibrium behaviour of low dimen?? sional dynamical systems, including some fluid flows (Rayleigh-Benard, Taylor-Couette, etc. ). These are mostly closed flows and many of the global structural features of the low dimensional systems have been observed in them, including chaotic behaviour, period doubling, intermit?? tency, etc. . It has also been shown that some of these flows are intrinsically low dimensional, which accounts for much of the observed similarities. Open flows seem to be different, and experimental observations point to an intrinsic high dimensionality. However, some of the tran?? sitional features of the low dimensional systems have been observed in them, specially in the intermittent behaviour of subcritical flows (pipes, channels, boundary layers with suction, etc. ), and in the large scale geometry of coherent structures of free shear flows (mixing layers, jets and wakes) |

Title | Polarization Bremsstrahlung |
Author(s) | Tsytovich, V.N;Oiringel, I.M |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer US, 1992. |
Description | XXVI, 370 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book was written by a group of authors and provides a systematic dis?? cussion of questions related to bremsstrahlung in many-particle systems. A number of new results have recently been obtained in this area which require a fundamental revision of the previously existing traditional concepts of bremsstrahlung. This ap?? plies both to complicated atoms containing a large number of electrons and to the additional bremsstrahlung in a system of many particles forming a medium. In fact, the traditional approach was rigorously applicable only either to isolated "structureless" particles (e. g. , to the emission of an electron on a proton) or to par?? ticles radiating in the limit of extremely high frequencies. Polarization effects (either polarization of an atom itself by an incident particle or polarization of the medium surrounding an atomic particle) have a significant effect in the practically important optical and x-ray frequency ranges and sometimes even predominate. The first effect has come to be known as polarization atomic (or dynamic) bremsstrahlung and the second, as polarization transition bremsstrahlung. The au?? thors of this book use a single term: polarization bremsstrahlung. It seems that, in contrast to earlier ideas on the subject, bremsstrahlung during collisions of heavy incident particles with atoms is by no means small and is entirely caused by polar?? ization effects |

Title | Low Reynolds number hydrodynamics : with special applications to particulate media |
Author(s) | Happel, J;Brenner, H |
Publication | Dordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1983. |
Description | XII, 553 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | One studying the motion of fluids relative to particulate systems is soon impressed by the dichotomy which exists between books covering theoretical and practical aspects. Classical hydrodynamics is largely concerned with perfect fluids which unfortunately exert no forces on the particles past which they move. Practical approaches to subjects like fluidization, sedimentation, and flow through porous media abound in much useful but uncorrelated empirical information. The present book represents an attempt to bridge this gap by providing at least the beginnings of a rational approach to fluid?? particle dynamics, based on first principles. From the pedagogic viewpoint it seems worthwhile to show that the Navier-Stokes equations, which form the basis of all systematic texts, can be employed for useful practical applications beyond the elementary problems of laminar flow in pipes and Stokes law for the motion of a single particle. Although a suspension may often be viewed as a continuum for practical purposes, it really consists of a discrete collection of particles immersed in an essentially continuous fluid. Consideration of the actual detailed boundary?? value problems posed by this viewpoint may serve to call attention to the limitation of idealizations which apply to the overall transport properties of a mixture of fluid and solid particles |

Title | Diagnostics for Experimental Thermonuclear Fusion Reactors |
Author(s) | Gorini, Giuseppe;Sindoni, Elio;Stott, Peter E |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer US, 1996. |
Description | 652 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book of proceedings collects the papers presented at the Workshop on Diagnostics for ITER, held at Villa Monastero, Varenna (Italy), from August 28 to September 1, 1995. The Workshop was organised by the International School of Plasma Physics "Piero Caldirola. " Established in 1971, the ISPP has organised over fifty advanced courses and workshops on topics mainly related to plasma physics. In particular, courses and workshops on plasma diagnostics (previously held in 1975, 1978, 1982, 1986, and 1991) can be considered milestones in the history of this institution. Looking back at the proceedings of the previous meetings in Varenna, one can appreciate the rapid progress in the field of plasma diagnostics over the past 20 years. The 1995 workshop was co-organised by the Istituto di Fisica del Plasma of the National Research Council (CNR). In contrast to previous Varenna meetings on diagnostics, which have covered diagnostics in present-day tokamaks and which have had a substantial tutorial component, the 1995 workshop concentrated specifically on the problems and challenges of ITER diagnostics. ITER (the International Thennonuclear Experimental Reactor, a joint venture of Europe, Japan, Russia, and the United States, presently under design) will need to measure a wide range of plasma parameters in order to reach and sustain high levels of fusion power. A list of the measurement requirements together with the parameter ranges, target measurement resolutions, and accuracies provides the starting point for selecting a list of candidate diagnostic systems |
