Abstract NoteIt is often said that these days there are too many conferences on general areas of computational mechanics. mechanics. and numer ical methods. vJhile this may be true. the his tory of scientific conferences is itself quite short. According to Abraham Pais (in "Subtle is the Lord ...??? " Oxford University Press. 1982. p.80). the first international scientific conference ever held was the Karlsruhe Congress of Chemists. 3-5 September 1860 in Karlsruhe. Germany. There were 127 chemists in attendance. and the participants came from Austria. Belgium. France. Germany. Great Britain. Italy. Mexico. Poland. Russia. Spain. Sweden. and Switzerland. At the top of the agenda of the points to be discussed at this conference was the question: "Shall a difference be made between the expressions molecule and atom?" Pais goes on to note: "The conference did not at once succeed in bringing chemists closer together ... It is possible that the older men were offended by the impetuous behavior and imposing manner of the younger scientists" (see references cited in Pais' book). It may be observed that history. in general. repeats itself. However. at ICCM-86 in Tokyo. roughly 500 participants from both the West and the East were in attendance; there were only scholarly exchanges; the young tried to learn from the more experienced. and a spirit of international academic cooperation prevailed

TitleAdvances in Superconductivity VIII : Proceedings of the 8th International Symposium on Superconductivity (ISS '95), October 30 - November 2, 1995, Hamamatsu
Author(s)Hayakawa, Hisao;Enomoto, Youichi
PublicationTokyo, Springer Japan, 1996.
DescriptionXL, 1382 p : online resource
Abstract NoteSince the discovery of superconductivity with trans1tton temperatures above 77 K, concentrated research activities toward the exploration of practical applica?? tions of these materials have been carried out. Currently, a remarkable improve?? ment in superconducting properties has been achieved due to the fine optimization of fabrication processes, and this has attracted industrial interest for future applications. In the case of NdBa Cu 0 materials, a new pinning mecha?? 2 3 7 nism was found which enhances the critical current under applied magnetic fields. In single crystals of these materials, oxygen control results in an increase in the growth rate. The metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) film quality has been improved by using a new liquid raw material. Simultaneously, real demands from the viewpoint of the market start to be a motivation force, es?? pecially in electronics application where some products are already being sold. At the same time, interesting physical properlies have been obtained from a new superconducting single crystal which has a layered perovskite structure without copper. In addition, various precision measurement techniques have confirmed the d-wave mechanism and the existence of intrinsicJosephson junctions in single crystals. These new phenomena challenge the existing theoretical models but also open the way for new applications. These significant areas of progress in materials science have led high-Tc super?? conductivity research into the next phase of activity, while fundamental research continues to be very important. I sincerely hope that this volume will give further impetus to this development

TitlePhysics and Astrophysics of Neutrinos
Author(s)Fukugita, Masataka;Suzuki, Atsuto
PublicationTokyo, Springer Japan, 1994.
DescriptionXIII, 934 p : online resource
Abstract NoteObservations of neutrinos being emitted by the supernova SN1987A, star neutrinos, and atmospheric neutrinos by means of underground detectors have provided new insights into astronomy. These observations have brought to light new unresolved phenomena such as the solar neutrino problem, spurring investigative studies among particle physicists and astrophysicists. Today, intense interaction and continual cooperation between specialists in the field of particle physics and astronomy/cosmology are a pre-requisite for conducting further studies. This book provides detailed elaborations on selected topics. One of the most important features of this book is its enumeration of a number of basic properties of neutrinos and their relationship to Grand Unified Theories. It does not cover all aspects of neutrino theory, but rather focuses on the origin of the neutrino's mass and the generation mixing of neutrinos. The neutrino experiments described were carried out mainly by Japanese researchers. All the kamiokande results, detector performances, and complete references are included. Experiments regarding the neutrino's mass are represented in the direct mass measurement, the double beta-decay experiment, and the neutrino oscillation experiment. The detection of low-energy astrophysical neutrinos is discussed. Particle acceleration mechanisms in astrophysics and the detection of high-energy gamma-rays and neutrinos are also represented

Abstract NoteThe 11th International Symposium on Superconductivity was held November 16-19, 1998, in Fukuoka, Japan. Convened annually since 1988, the symposium covers the whole field of superconductivity from fundamental physics and chemistry to new applications. At the 11th Symposium, there was increased interest reported in the development of trial devices using bismuth wires and yttrium-based bulk materials. Among the presentations were those that clearly defined the development targets for next-generation yttrium-based wires and bulk materials and single-flux quantum (SFQ) circuits. Other popular topics were high-temperature superconductivity applications such as SQUIDs, microwave filters, and cryocooler-cooled magnets. With more than 600 participants from 18 countries, the symposium provided an excellent forum for exchanges of the most recent information in the field of superconductivity

TitleNear-field Nano/Atom Optics and Technology
Author(s)Ohtsu, Motoichi
PublicationTokyo, Springer Japan, 1998.
DescriptionXIV, 302 p : online resource
Abstract NoteIntrinsic features of the optical near field open a new frontier in optical science and technology by finally overcoming the diffraction limit to reach nanometric dimensions. But this book goes beyond near-field optical microscopy to cover local spectroscopy, nanoscale optical processing and storage, quantum near-field optics, and atom manipulation. Near-Field Nano/Atom Optics and Technology provides the first complete and systematically compiled account of the science and technology required to generate the near field, and features applications including imaging of biological specimens and diagnostics for semiconductor nanomaterials and devices. This monograph will be invaluable to researchers who want to implement near-field technology in their own work, and it can also be used as a textbook for graduate or undergraduate students

TitleThe Biokinetics of Flying and Swimming
Author(s)Azuma, Akira
PublicationTokyo, Springer Japan, 1992.
DescriptionXVIII, 265 p : online resource
Abstract NoteFrom a mechanical perspective, an animal's shape and the topological connection of its organs are important factors in locomotion. This book describes the physical relationships between form, habitat, way of life, and movement in living creatures. It includes in-depth mechanical and mathematical analyses of the way in which creatures move about, and it also investigates dispersal modes of plants and animals within the framework of flying and swimming. The book is written from the viewpoint of mechanics, specifically fluid dynamics and flight dynamics, rather than from that of physiology and ecology. It will prove a useful reference for aeronautical and mechanical engineers as well as for biologists who use mechanical analyses in the study of behaviour, function, and locomotion

Author(s)Kawata, Kozo;Shioiri, Jumpei
PublicationTokyo, Springer Japan, 1996.
DescriptionXVIII, 240 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe IUTAM Symposium on Constitutive Relation in High/Very High Strain Rates (CRHVHSR) was held October 16 - 19, 1995, at Seminar House, Science University of Tokyo, under the sponsorship of IUTAM, Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, The Commemorative Association for the Japan World Exposition (1970), Inoue Foundation for Science, The Japan Society for Aeronautical and Space Sciences, and Science University of Tokyo. The proposal to hold the symposium was accepted by the General Assembly of IUT AM held in Haifa, Israel, in August 1992, and the scientists mentioned below were appointed by the Bureau of IUTAM to serve as members of the Scientific Committee. The main object of the symposium was to make a general survey of recent developments in the research of constitutive relations in high and very high strain rates and related problems in high velocity solid mechanics, and to explore further new ideas for dealing with unresolved problems of a fundamental nature as well as of practical importance. The subjects covered theoretical, experimental, and numerical fields in the above-mentioned problems in solids, covering metals, polymers, ceramics, and composites. Emphasis was given to the following fields: 1. Material characterization of solids in high velocity deformation, experimental techniques, typical data obtained by these techniques, modeling, and constitutive relations 2. Strain rate dependent elasto-visco-plastic stress waves 3. Crack initiation, propagation, and dynamic fracture toughness 4. Dynamic stress concentration 5. Structural dynamics in impact and constitutive relations of solids 6

TitleAdvances in Superconductivity X : Proceedings of the 10th International Symposium on Superconductivity (ISS ???97), October 27???30, 1997, Gifu Volume 1???3
Author(s)Osamura, Kozo;Hirabayashi, Izumi
PublicationTokyo, Springer Japan, 1998.
DescriptionLIX, 1472 p. 1657 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteThe International Symposium on Superconductivity, which has been held annu?? ally since 1988, is a forum for presenting the most up-to-date information about a broad range of research and development in superconductivity, from funda?? mental aspects to applications. More than 10 years have passed since the discovery of oxide superconductors and since various developments of applications began. It may be said that the prospects for application of oxide superconductors recently have opened up. Great progress has been made toward practical use, for example, of the flywheel, which uses bulk materials, and the high-performance cryo-cooled magnet made of bismuth wire. These were the results of persistent efforts to develop materials from the viewpoint of materials science and engineering. Also important is the progress in comprehensive understanding of high?? temperature superconductivity. Unique electronic properties of cuprates such as the non-Fermi liquid normal state, spin-charge separation, spin gap, and d-wave symmetry were discussed at the symposium, as were the unique electromagnetic properties resulting from the low dimensionality of cuprates. In the field of new superconductors, many exotic materials have been discovered since 1986. A decade of work with cuprate superconductors is reviewed in this proceedings, and several of the newest materials are presented. These papers will be instructive for many researchers and for students who are to enter this field

TitleShock Waves in Materials Science
Author(s)Sawaoka, Akira B
PublicationTokyo, Springer Japan, 1993.
DescriptionXIV, 227 p. 49 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteIn this volume, the shock compression technology of materials is described in parallel with the latest research results and their background. In the past, this type of technology was developed in connection with military techniques by certain particular research organizations. For this reason, researchers of materials in general have had less opportunity to make use of the technology. The conventional technology of shock compression has now been established, and is recognized as being remarkably useful as a means of materials science study. The feasibility of shock compression technology is dealt with in this book, as well as the latest research results for general material scientists. The shock synthesis of ceramics and intermetallic compounds, as well as shock compression behavior, are also described. In contrast to conventional works of this kind, this book describes shock compression studies performed by material scientists
