TitleThe Private Practice of Behavior Therapy : A Guide for Behavioral Practitioners
Author(s)Kaplan, Sheldon J
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer US, 1986.
DescriptionXVI, 289 p : online resource
Abstract NoteEntering a full-time private practice and forsaking the comforts of a regular paycheck was a difficult decision for me. Fortunately, I was able to begin my practice on a part-time basis in space rented from two physician friends. By using my behavior skills for self-management and organization, I was then able to help my practice grow so that, with some trepidation, I moved into a full-time practice. I have continued to maintain my practice according to the same ethical, professional, and business assumptions discussed in this book. One of the reasons for my writing this book is that, at the time I was beginning my practice, there was no one text that helped me begin or to explain what "nuts and bolts" issues I needed to consider. As my practice has grown, I continued to see a need for a resource text to help the beginning therapist get started. I decided to describe the assump?? tions, methods, and issues that I have used so as to present a discussion of timely issues relevant to the practice of behavior therapy

TitleTreating Child-Abusive Families : Intervention Based on Skills-Training Principles
Author(s)Kelly, Jeffrey A
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer US, 1983.
DescriptionXIV, 220 p : online resource
Abstract NoteDuring the past ten years, the problem of child abuse has been the subject of increased attention both in the professional community and among the general public. The reasons for this widespread recogni?? tion are clear. First, professionals of many disciplines deal with child?? abusive families and do so in a variety of ways: Physicians, hospital staff, and teachers are often the first to assess a child as the victim of abuse; social workers and child-protective personnel investigate cases of suspected abuse; court and legal authorities make determinations concerning the needs of an abused child; and mental health profes?? sionals, including psychologists, social workers, and family coun?? selors, often have responsibility for treating abusive families. Few clinical problems have received this kind of widespread interdisci?? plinary recognition and, given the nature and seriousness of child?? abusive behavior, few problems receive such intensive attention within each profession's literature. A second factor responsible for increased study of child abuse is the fact that violence directed toward children is probably the most extreme form of family dysfunction seen by counselors, therapists, and other practitioners. While other types of child-management and anger-control problems occur far more frequently, the consequences of child-abusive behavior are much more serious than the conse?? quences of other problems seen in child or family clinics. It has been v vi PREFACE estimated that as many as 550,000 children are the targets of parental abuse in the country each year (Helfer & Kemper, 1976)

TitleBehavioral Assessment and Rehabilitation of the Traumatically Brain-Damaged
Author(s)Edelstein, Barry A;Couture, Eugene T
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer US, 1984.
DescriptionXVIII, 348 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book developed out of the editors' longstanding interest in the retraining of traumatically brain-damaged adults and the management of their behavior by family members. A search for relevant experimental evidence to support the clinical use of behavioral principles for retrain?? ing, which began in 1977, turned up little empirical support. Moreover, the literature on retraining was dispersed among a variety of journals published in various countries. Nowhere was there a compendium of literature that addressed issues of assessment and retraining. There was no place to turn if one wanted to move from a standard neuropsy?? chological evaluation to the retraining of skill deficits revealed in the evaluation. We have attempted to edit a book that represents what we had hoped to find in the literature and could be used by professionals in clinical psychology, clinical neuropsychology, rehabilitation medicine, physical therapy, speech therapy, and other disciplines that address rehabilitation of brain-damaged adults-a book that addresses assess?? ment and rehabilitation issues and is sufficiently detailed to offer the reader a starting point in developing behavioral assessment and re?? habilitation programs. The book contains conceptual foundations, re?? views of research, descriptions of successful rehabilitation programs, and relatively detailed approaches to the retraining of specific skills. A shift from an assessment-based practice to one encompassing both prescriptive assessment and treatment has become a recognized transition in the neuropsychological literature and was best articulated in an article by Gerald Goldstein in March of 1979

DescriptionXII, 340 p : online resource
Abstract NoteUpon the request of the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (IUTAM) the Swedish National Committee for Mechanics organized a colloquium on fatigue, which was held at the Royal Institute of Technology (Kung!. Tekniska Hogskolan) in Stock?? holm, May 25-27, 1955. 35 lectures were delivered, principally dealing with problems of statistical and basic nature. Among the topics were to be found statis?? tical theory of fatigue, cumulative damage, mechanism of fatigue, me?? tallurgical aspects on fatigue, velocity of fatigue cracks, fatigue at elevated temperature, and fatigue at combined stresses. Lectures were going on simultaneously in two sections. Each lecturer had 15 minutes for presentation of his communication, and afterwards 15 minutes were reserved for discussion. Abstracts of the lectures were distributed about a month before the colloquium. The colloquium was attended by 149 participants from the follow?? ing countries: Denmark (1), Finland (2), France (5), Germany (6), Italy (2), Netherlands (2), Norway (2), Poland (2), Saar (1), Spain (3), Sweden (100), Switzerland (1), United Kingdom (10), USA (8), USSR (3), and Yugoslavia (1). A complete list of the participants will be found below. The languages of the Colloquium were English, French, German and Italian. No lectures were delivered in Italian. Also, all contributions to the discussions have been translated to one of the first three languages. Statements and opinions advanced are always those of the individual authors or participants in the discussions

TitleHandbook of Treatment Approaches in Childhood Psychopathology
Author(s)Matson, Johnny L
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer US, 1988.
Description612 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe treatment of psychopathology in children has been a centerpiece of the overall field of problem behaviors in children. Therefore, a considerable number of data have been accumulated, particularly in recent years. These efforts have expanded at such a rate as to result in the publication of several new journals, such as the Journal of Clinical Child Psychology and Education and Treatment of Children. Similarly, many standard general clinical journals have begun to de?? vote more attention to children. Despite these efforts, few books have emerged that are devoted directly and specifically to treatment in childhood psychopath?? ology. This volume's scope is broad in that it reviews not only behavior therapy, but also the rapidly expanding efforts in psychopathology and traditional psy?? chotherapy, and at an advanced level. It is designed to provide an in-depth scholarly review of the empirical evidence, including an overview and analysis of the available techniques, their effectiveness, and the limitations and complica?? tions arising from the use of these treatment methods with the full range of psychopathology displayed by children. Many nationally and internationally recognized experts have agreed to contribute chapters to this book, and we hope that what has emerged is an up-to-date and authoritative volume

TitleHandbook of the Brief Psychotherapies
Author(s)Wells, Richard A;Giannetti, Vincent J
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer US, 1990.
DescriptionXX, 604 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe last two decades have seen unprecedented increases in health care costs and, at the same time, encouraging progress in psychotherapy research. On the one hand, accountability, cost-effectiveness, and efficiency have now become commonplace terms for providers of mental health services whereas, on the other hand, an increasingly voluminous literature has emerged supporting the effectiveness of a number of types of psychotherapies. There now exists the possibility for the design and delivery of mental health services that-drawing upon this literature-more closely approximate empirically established data concerning the appropriateness and effectiveness of psychotherapy. The Handbook of the Brief Psychotherapies is intended to capture one major thrust of this movement: the development of a group of empirically grounded, time-limited therapies all sharing a common interest in the clinical utilization of a structured focus and an emphasis on time and action. For many years, professional self-interest, competing theoretical para?? digms, and the vagaries of practice, wisdom, and clinical myth have influenced the practice of psychotherapy. A critical questioning of the resulting, predomi?? nantly nondirective, open-ended, and global therapies has led to a growing emphasis on action-oriented, problem-focused, time-limited therapies. Yet, ironically, this interest in the brief psychotherapies has not so much involved a radical departure from traditional therapeutic modalities as it has emphasized a new pragmatism about how time, action, and structure operate in life as well as in therapy

TitleSexual Behavior : Problems and Management
Author(s)McConaghy, Nathaniel
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer US, 1993.
DescriptionXII, 414 p : online resource
Abstract NoteMany issues remain unresolved in sexuality. In some cases this is because the infor?? mation is not available to resolve them. In others it is, but the available conclusions the information supports block its acceptance, because they conflict with the posi?? tions of dominant groups in the politics of sexuality. Possibly the most obvious example is the determination of many theorists to ignore the evidence that while men rarely report being sexually assaulted, when questioned in community surveys, they make up a third of the victims, and a quarter of the perpetrators of sexual assault are women. These findings are incompatible with the feminist theory that sexual assault is not a sexual act, but normal male behavior motivated politically, to maintain men's dominance of women. Most research supporting the theory investigated women only as victims and men only as aggressors. Some feminists have dismissed the need for any research to support their beliefs on the ground that such research is "busy work" establishing what women already know. One belief considered not to require re?? search is that heterosexual pornography made for a male audience increases the prevalence of rape by encouraging rape-supportive attitudes of male aggression and female submission. No criticism has been directed at the soft-core pornography of "Mills and Boon" stories written for women that promote similar attitudes

TitleSocial Skills Assessment and Training with Children : An Empirically Based Handbook
Author(s)Michelson, Larry;Sugai, Don P;Wood, Randy P;Kazdin, Alan E
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer US, 1983.
DescriptionXIV, 268 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe purpose of this book is to provide readers with sufficient knowledge regard?? ing social skills assessment and training with children so that they can imple?? ment and evaluate social skills programs on their own. Increased interest in promoting children's social skills has stemmed in part from advances in research that have shown the importance of childhood social competency for adjustment in both childhood and adulthood. There is a growing need for assessment and training methods that can be utilized by diverse groups of professionals and paraprofessionals. This book is intended for mental health workers, teachers, educators, clinicians, and child-care personnel. The book thoroughly reviews the literature to acquaint readers with relevant findings on social skills and to pro?? vide discussion regarding contemporary issues and assessment techniques. Sub?? sequently, comprehensive procedures in the training of children's social skills are presented. Readers are also provided with 16 detailed training modules, each of which comprises a rationale, instructions, Scripts, and homework assign?? ments. These modules are designed to permit effective implementation of social skills training programs. Moreover, they provide a structured and program?? matically designed format that builds in clinical flexibility for their use with individual children or groups of children. These modules are followed by a clinical-issues section designed to address potential obstacles to effective training. Following these major sections, two appendixes have been included in the book. The first appendix is a step-by-step description of how to conduct an assessment

TitleClinical Psychology : Historical and Research Foundations
Author(s)Walker, C. Eugene
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer US, 1991.
DescriptionXIV, 540 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe purpose of this book is to provide the reader with a survey of some of the major areas of clinical psychology. No attempt has been made to include every area relevant to clinical psychology; the choices are selective but represent the wide range of areas touched by clinical psychologists. For some years I have felt the need for a book that provides students with more of a historical introduction and context from which to view current clinical psychology than is included in most textbooks. The issues and problems of clinical psychology have been with us since the beginning of time; however, most psychological literature is written with the bias that anything older than five or ten years is not relevant. Those who attempt to take a long-range view of clinical psychology are sometimes able to recall the early development of the field in the 1930s and 1940s. In this text, I asked the authors to begin with a brief survey of ancient and medieval history to set the stage for a discussion of current research and developments in the field. I hope that a presentation of this sort will provide the reader-whether advanced undergraduate, graduate, or professional-with a sense of perspective and context from which to view and understand clinical psychology

TitleA Primer of Human Behavioral Pharmacology
Author(s)Poling, Alan
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer US, 1986.
DescriptionXVI, 246 p : online resource
Abstract Notevii Drugs and sex are two topics about which most people have strong opinions and weak understanding. Knowledge of each can be gained in many ways, all with associated rewards and risks. Like all textbooks, this one was written in the belief that reading can foster learning. The book is intended to introduce principles of behavioral pharmacology to readers with little or no knowledge of the discipline but with an interest in how drugs affect human behavior. Gleaning anything of value from the text requires two things from the reader. The first is a willingness to accept an analysis of drug effects that shares little with folklore or common sense no?? tions of drug action. The second is a willingness to accept the fact that the behavioral effects of drugs are complex and depend upon a sizable number of pharmacological and behavioral variables. Unless one is aware of these factors and how they determine a drug's actions, the behavioral effects of drugs can be neither pre?? dicted nor meaningfully explained. If it does nothing else, this volume will make it obvious that the behavioral effects of drugs are lawful and can be predicted and understood on the basis of well-established relations between empirical phenomena. De?? scribing these relations and exploring how they allow behavioral ix x PREFACE pharmacologists to make sense of drug effects that are otherwise incomprehensible was a major goal in preparing the text
