TitleProceedings of the 7th International Conference on Discrete Element Methods
Author(s)Li, Xikui;Feng, Yuntian;Mustoe, Graham
PublicationSingapore, Springer Singapore, 2017.
DescriptionXLIX, 1455 p. 966 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book presents the latest advances in Discrete Element Methods (DEM) and technology. It is the proceeding of 7th International Conference on DEM which was held at Dalian University of Technology on August 1 - 4, 2016. The subject of this book are the DEM and related computational techniques such as DDA, FEM/DEM, molecular dynamics, SPH, Meshless methods, etc., which are the main computational methods for modeling discontinua. In comparison to continua which have been already studied for a long time, the research of discontinua is relatively new, but increases dramatically in recent years and has already become an important field. This book will benefit researchers and scientists from the academic fields of physics, engineering and applied mathematics, as well as from industry and national laboratories who are interested in the DEM.

TitleA Far-Infrared Spectro-Spatial Space Interferometer : Instrument Simulator and Testbed Implementation
Author(s)Juanola-Parramon, Roser
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2016.
DescriptionXV, 156 p. 100 illus., 72 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis thesis describes the physics and computational aspects of an end-to-end simulator to predict the performance of a Space-based Far Infrared Interferometer. The present thesis also includes, the science capabilities and instrumental state-of-the art. The latter is the ambitious next step which the Far-Infrared Astrophysical community needs to take to improve in anyway on the results of the most recent and current space telescopes in this wavelength region. This thesis outlines the requirements involved in such a mission and describes the most promising technique to capture most of the astrophysical information by combining spectroscopy to spatial interferometer. The simulation of such a system is extremely complex requiring multiple Fourier transforms each of which is subject to instrument non-idealities and appropriate optimization techniques. As a conclusion, the thesis provides an example of the basic performance achievable with such an instrument when targeting a young star formation region

TitleCountdown to a Moon Launch : Preparing Apollo for Its Historic Journey
Author(s)Ward, Jonathan H
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2015.
DescriptionXXVI, 435 p. 271 illus., 78 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThousands of workers labored at Kennedy Space Center around the clock, seven days a week, for half a year to prepare a mission for the liftoff of Apollo 11. This is the story of what went on during those hectic six months. Countdown to a Moon Launch provides an in-depth look at the carefully choreographed workflow for an Apollo mission at KSC. Using the Apollo 11 mission as an example, readers will learn what went on day by day to transform partially completed stages and crates of parts into a ready-to-fly Saturn V. Firsthand accounts of launch pad accidents, near misses, suspected sabotage, and last-minute changes to hardware are told by more than 70 NASA employees and its contractors. A companion to Rocket Ranch, it includes many diagrams and photographs, some never before published, to illustrate all aspects of the process. NASA???s groundbreaking use of computers for testing and advanced management techniques are also covered in detail. This book will demystify the question of how NASA could build and launch Apollo missions using 1960s technology. You???ll discover that there was no magic involved ??? just an abundance of discipline, willpower, and creativity

TitleField Models in Electricity and Magnetism
Author(s)Di Barba, Paolo;Savini, Antonio;Wiak, Slawomir
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 2008.
DescriptionX, 174 p : online resource
Abstract NoteCovering the development of field computation in the past forty years, Field Models in Electricity and Magnetism intends to be a concise, comprehensive and up-to-date introduction to field models in electricity and magnetism, ranging from basic theory to numerical applications. The approach assumed throughout the whole book is to solve field problems directly from partial differential equations in terms of vector quantities. Theoretical issues are illustrated by practical examples. In particular, a single example is solved by different methods so that, by comparison of results, limitations and advantages of the various methods are made clear. The subjects of the synthesis of fields and of the optimal design of devices, which are growing in research and so far have not been adequately covered in textbooks, are developed in addition to more classical subjects of analysis. Topics covered include: vector fields: electrostatics, magnetostatics, steady conduction; analytical methods for solving boundary-value problems; numerical methods for solving boundary-value problems; time-varying electromagnetic field; inverse problems; optimization. Field Models in Electricity and Magnetism results from the cooperation of three authors in teaching electromagnetic theory at various levels and in different countries

TitleNumerical Methods for Metamaterial Design
Author(s)Diest, Kenneth
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 2013.
DescriptionXVI, 213 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book describes a relatively new approach for the design of electromagnetic metamaterials.?? Numerical optimization routines are combined with electromagnetic simulations to tailor the broadband optical properties of a metamaterial to have predetermined responses at predetermined wavelengths. After a review of both the major efforts within the field of metamaterials and the field of mathematical optimization, chapters covering both gradient-based and derivative-free design methods are considered.?? Selected topics including surrogate-base optimization, adaptive mesh search, and genetic algorithms are shown to be effective, gradient-free optimization strategies.?? Additionally, new techniques for representing dielectric distributions in two dimensions, including level sets, are demonstrated as effective methods for gradient-based optimization.?? Each chapter begins with a rigorous review of the optimization strategy used, and is followed by numerous examples that combine the strategy with either electromagnetic simulations or analytical solutions of the scattering problem.?? Throughout the text, we address the strengths and limitations of each method, as well as which numerical methods are best suited for different types of metamaterial designs.?? This book is intended to provide a detailed enough treatment of the mathematical methods used, along with sufficient examples and additional references, that senior level undergraduates or graduate students who are new to the fields of plasmonics, metamaterials, or optimization methods; have an understanding of which approaches are best-suited for their work and how to implement the methods themselves
