TitleNonlinear Equations in Physics and Mathematics : Proceedings of the NATO Advanced Study Institute held in Istanbul, Turkey, August 1???13, 1977
Author(s)Barut, P
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1978.
DescriptionX, 474 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThis is the third Volume in a series of books devoted to the interdisciplinary area between mathematics and physics, all ema?? nating from the Advanced Study Institutes held in Istanbul in 1970, 1972 and 1977. We believe that physics and mathematics can develop best in harmony and in close communication and cooper?? ation with each other and are sometimes inseparable. With this goal in mind we tried to bring mathematicians and physicists together to talk and lecture to each other-this time in the area of nonlinear equations. The recent progress and surge of interest in nonlinear ordi?? nary and partial differential equations has been impressive. At the same time, novel and interesting physical applications mul?? tiply. There is a unifying element brought about by the same characteristic nonlinear behavior occurring in very widely differ?? ent physical situations, as in the case of "solitons," for exam?? ple. This Volume gives, we believe, a very good indication over all of this recent progress both in theory and applications, and over current research activity and problems. The 1977 Advanced Study Institute was sponsored by the NATO Scientific Affairs Division, The University of the Bosphorus and the Turkish Scientific and Technical Research Council. We are deeply grateful to these Institutions for their support, and to lecturers and participants for their hard work and enthusiasm which created an atmosphere of lively scientific discussions

TitleImportant Developments in Soliton Theory
Author(s)Fokas, A.S;Zakharov, V.E
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1993.
DescriptionIX, 559 p : online resource
Abstract NoteIn the last ten to fifteen years there have been many important developments in the theory of integrable equations. This period is marked in particular by the strong impact of soliton theory in many diverse areas of mathematics and physics; for example, algebraic geometry (the solution of the Schottky problem), group theory (the discovery of quantum groups), topology (the connection of Jones polynomials with integrable models), and quantum gravity (the connection of the KdV with matrix models). This is the first book to present a comprehensive overview of these developments. Numbered among the authors are many of the most prominent researchers in the field

TitleApproximation Theory, Spline Functions and Applications
Author(s)Singh, S.P
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1992.
DescriptionXVI, 479 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThese are the Proceedings of the NATO Advanced Study Institute on Approximation Theory, Spline Functions and Applications held in the Hotel villa del Mare, Maratea, Italy between April 28,1991 and May 9, 1991. The principal aim of the Advanced Study Institute, as reflected in these Proceedings, was to bring together recent and up-to-date developments of the subject, and to give directions for future research. Amongst the main topics covered during this Advanced Study Institute is the subject of uni?? variate and multivariate wavelet decomposition over spline spaces. This is a relatively new area in approximation theory and an increasingly impor?? tant subject. The work involves key techniques in approximation theory?? cardinal splines, B-splines, Euler-Frobenius polynomials, spline spaces with non-uniform knot sequences. A number of scientific applications are also highlighted, most notably applications to signal processing and digital im?? age processing. Developments in the area of approximation of functions examined in the course of our discussions include approximation of periodic phenomena over irregular node distributions, scattered data interpolation, Pade approximants in one and several variables, approximation properties of weighted Chebyshev polynomials, minimax approximations, and the Strang?? Fix conditions and their relation to radial functions. I express my sincere thanks to the members of the Advisory Commit?? tee, Professors B. Beauzamy, E. W. Cheney, J. Meinguet, D. Roux, and G. M. Phillips. My sincere appreciation and thanks go to A. Carbone, E. DePas?? cale, R. Charron, and B

TitleOperational Quantum Physics
Author(s)Busch, Paul;Grabowski, Marian;Lahti, Pekka J
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1995.
DescriptionXI, 232 p. 10 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteOperational Quantum Physics offers a systematic presentation of quantum mechanics which makes exhaustive use of the full probabilistic structure of this theory. Accordingly the notion of an observable as a positive operator valued (POV) measure is explained in great detail, and the ensuing quantum measurement theory is developed and applied both to a resolution of long-standing conceptual and interpretational puzzles in the foundations of quantum mechanics, and to an analysis of various recent fundamental experiments. The book, or different parts of it, may be of interest to advanced students or researchers in quantum physics, to philosophers of physics, and to mathematicians working on operator valued measures

TitleIntegrable Systems and Applications : Proceedings of a Workshop Held at Ol??ron, France, June 20???24, 1988
Author(s)Balabane, Mikhael;Lochak, Pierre;Sulem, Catherine
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1989.
DescriptionVII, 344 p. 24 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteIn this volume nonlinear systems related to integrable systems are studied. Lectures cover such topics as the application of integrable systems to the description of natural phenomena, the elaboration of perturbation theories, and the statistical mechanics of ensembles of objects obeying integrable equations. The more physical lectures center largely around the three paradigmatic equations: Korteweg de Vries, Sine-Gordon and Nonlinear Schr??dinger, especially the latter. These have long been of great mathematical interest, and also exhibit a "universality" which places them among the most frequently encountered integrable equations in the description of physical systems. Tidal waves, optical fibers and laser beams are among the topics discussed. Lectures are also devoted to multidimensional solitons, integrability of Hamiltonian systems of ODEs and dissipative systems of PDEs

TitleBoundary Value Problems for Linear Evolution Partial Differential Equations : Proceedings of the NATO Advanced Study Institute held in Li??ge, Belgium, September 6???17, 1976
Author(s)Garnir, H.G
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1977.
DescriptionXIV, 473 p : online resource
Abstract NoteMost of the problems posed by Physics to Mathematical Analysis are boundary value problems for partial differential equations and systems. Among them, the problems concerning linear evolution equations have an outstanding position in the study of the physical world, namely in fluid dynamics, elastodynamics, electromagnetism, plasma physics and so on. This Institute was devoted to these problems. It developed essentially the new methods inspired by Functional Analysis and specially by the theories of Hilbert spaces, distributions and ultradistributions. The lectures brought a detailed exposition of the novelties in this field by world known specialists. We held the Institute at the Sart Tilman Campus of the University of Liege from September 6 to 17, 1976. It was attended by 99 participants, 79 from NATO Countries [Belgium (30), Canada (2), Denmark (I), France (15), West Germany (9), Italy (5), Turkey (3), USA (14)] and 20 from non NATO Countries [Algeria (2), Australia (3), Austria (I), Finland (1), Iran (3), Ireland (I), Japan (6), Poland (1), Sweden (I), Zair (1)]. TitleModeling Nature : Cellular Automata Simulations with Mathematica??
Author(s)Gaylord, Richard J;Nishidate, Kazume
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer New York, 1996.
DescriptionXVIII, 260 p. 82 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteThis is the first volume in a suite of short, inexpensive, paperbound volumes intended for student usage as textbooks, or course supplements, and for purchase as single-copy reference works for professionals in specific disciplines, and, in some cases, for interdisciplinary use. This title focuses on cellular automata simulations while using Mathematica, thus its audience is a generally broad one, although physicists, life scientists and engineers will find this title to be of particular interest. Those familiar with Gaylord's previous book, coauthored with Paul Wellin, "Computer Simulations with Mathematica - Explorations in Complex Biological and Physical Systems", also published by TELOS, will find this new title to be an in-depth extension of some topics dealt with in that book. Modeling Nature: Cellular Automata Simulations with Mathematica, however, contains simulations not found in the Gaylord-Wellin volume. This book will have a DOS-diskette packaged with it, enabling cross-platform access to the code. These data files will also be made accessible online via the Internet at telospub.com FTP and WWW sites
