Title | The Theory of Sprays and Finsler Spaces with Applications in Physics and Biology |
Author(s) | Antonelli, P.L;Ingarden, Roman S;Matsumoto, M |
Publication | Dordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1993. |
Description | XVI, 312 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | The present book has been written by two mathematicians and one physicist: a pure mathematician specializing in Finsler geometry (Makoto Matsumoto), one working in mathematical biology (Peter Antonelli), and a mathematical physicist specializing in information thermodynamics (Roman Ingarden). The main purpose of this book is to present the principles and methods of sprays (path spaces) and Finsler spaces together with examples of applications to physical and life sciences. It is our aim to write an introductory book on Finsler geometry and its applications at a fairly advanced level. It is intended especially for graduate students in pure mathemat?? ics, science and applied mathematics, but should be also of interest to those pure "Finslerists" who would like to see their subject applied. After more than 70 years of relatively slow development Finsler geometry is now a modern subject with a large body of theorems and techniques and has math?? ematical content comparable to any field of modern differential geometry. The time has come to say this in full voice, against those who have thought Finsler geometry, because of its computational complexity, is only of marginal interest and with prac?? tically no interesting applications. Contrary to these outdated fossilized opinions, we believe "the world is Finslerian" in a true sense and we will try to show this in our application in thermodynamics, optics, ecology, evolution and developmental biology. On the other hand, while the complexity of the subject has not disappeared, the modern bundle theoretic approach has increased greatly its understandability |

Title | Ocean Resources : Volume II Subsea Work Systems and Technologies |
Author(s) | Ardus, D.A;Champ, M.A |
Publication | Dordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1990. |
Description | XVI, 240 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | Ocean engineering is generally considered to be concerned with studies on the effects of the ocean on the land and with the design, construction and operation of vehicles, structures and systems for use in the ocean or marine environment. The practice of engineering differs from that of science in both motivations and objectives. Science seeks understanding of the principles of nature in terms of generalizations expressed as laws and classifications. Engineering seeks the application of knowledge of the physical and natural world to produce a benefit expressed as a device, system, material, and/or process. From the standpoint of the financial sponsors of an engineering project, the ideal approach is one of minimal risk in which only proven knowledge, materials and procedures are employed. There is frequent departure from this ideal in anticipation of the increased benefit expected from a large increase in performance of a structure or device. The process of acquiring this new capability is engineering research. Historically, ocean engineering developed with the application of engineering principles and processes to the design of ships and, later, to the machinery that propels them. In most societies, naval architecture and marine engineering are recognised as the origin of ocean engineering. In fact, the design of a ship constitutes the original systems engineering programme involving hydrodynamics/fluid flow, structural design, machinery design, electrical engineering and so on as well as requiring knowledge of the ocean environment (waves, corrosion, etc.) |

Title | Mechanisms of Migration in Fishes |
Author(s) | McCleave, James D |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer US, 1984. |
Description | X, 574 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | The last major synthesis of our knowledge of fish migration and the underlying transport and guidance phenomena, both physical and biological, was "Fish Migration" published 16 years ago by F.R. Harden Jones (1968). That synthesis was based largely upon what could be gleaned by classical fishery-biology techni.ques, such as tagging and recapture studies, commercial fishing statistics, and netting and trapping studies. Despite the fact that Harden Jones also provided, with a good deal of thought and speculation, a theoretical basis for studying the various aspects of fish migration and migratory orientation, progress in this field has been, with a few excepti.ons, piecemeal and more disjointed than might have been expected. Thus we welcomed the approach from the NATO Marine Sciences Programme Panel and the encouragement from F.R. Harden Jones to develop a proprosal for, and ultimately to organize, a NATO Advanced Research Institute (ARI) on mechanisms of fish migration. Substantial progress had been made with descriptive, analytical and predictive approaches to fish migration since the appearance of "Fish ~ligration." Both because of the progress and the often conflicting results of research, we felt that the time was again right and the effort justified to synthesize and to critically assess our knowledge. Our ultimate aim was to identify the gains and shortcomings and to develop testable hypotheses for the next decade or two |

Title | Primary Productivity and Biogeochemical Cycles in the Sea |
Author(s) | Falkowski, Paul G;Woodhead, Avril D |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer US, 1992. |
Description | X, 550 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | Biological processes in the oceans play a crucial role in regulating the fluxes of many important elements such as carbon, nitrogen, sulfur, oxygen, phosphorus, and silicon. As we come to the end of the 20th century, oceanographers have increasingly focussed on how these elements are cycled within the ocean, the interdependencies of these cycles, and the effect of the cycle on the composition of the earth's atmosphere and climate. Many techniques and tools have been developed or adapted over the past decade to help in this effort. These include satellite sensors of upper ocean phytoplankton distributions, flow cytometry, molecular biological probes, sophisticated moored and shipboard instrumentation, and vastly increased numerical modeling capabilities. This volume is the result of the 37th Brookhaven Symposium in Biology, in which a wide spectrum of oceanographers, chemists, biologists, and modelers discussed the progress in understanding the role of primary producers in biogeochemical cycles. The symposium is dedicated to Dr. Richard W. Eppley, an intellectual giant in biological oceanography, who inspired a generation of scientists to delve into problems of understanding biogeochemical cycles in the sea. We gratefully acknowledge support from the U.S. Department of Energy, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, the National Science Foundation, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the Electric Power Research Institute, and the Environmental Protection Agency. Special thanks to Claire Lamberti for her help in producing this volume |

Title | Marine Pelagic Cyanobacteria: Trichodesmium and other Diazotrophs |
Author(s) | Carpenter, E.J;Capone, D.G |
Publication | Dordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1992. |
Description | XII, 358 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | Planktonic marine cyanobacteria are abundant and significant in the biogeochemistry of the sea. This volume focuses on the filamentous cyanobacteria, particularly those in the genus Trichodesmium which are common in tropical and subtropical seas. A portion of this book also concerns bloom-forming cyanobacteria in the Baltic Sea area. Filamentous cyanobacteria are important as primary producers and for the fixation of atmospheric nitrogen and thus are significant in global cycling of both of these elements. In recent years, through the application of new techniques and intensive multi-disciplinary research programs, progress has been made in understanding both the biology of these cyanobacteria and their place in the marine food web. A broad range of topics is covered in this book, ranging from molecular biology, physiology, ultrastructure, enzyme localization, toxicology, remote sensing, buoyancy, herbivory and the ecology of these organisms in the marine food web. This volume is an outgrowth of a NATO-sponsored meeting held in May 1991 in Bamberg, Germany, and represents the latest synthesis on these marine phytoplankters |

Title | Pesticides in Aquatic Environments |
Author(s) | Khan, Mohammad |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer US, 1977. |
Description | XIV, 257 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | Water covers about two-thirds of the surface of earth, but only 0.627 percent of this water is the sweet surface and subsurface water available for the survival of freshwater organisms including man (1,2). Some of this fresh or sweet water lies in practically uninhabitable regions (rivers: }1ackenzie in Canada; Amazon in Central America; Ob, Yenesey, and Lenta in Siberia, etc.). Also, most of the major rivers (the Mississippi in U.S.A., the Rhine in Europe, the Volga in U.S.S.R., the Ganges in India, etc.), because they flow through agricultural land or urban and industrial areas, have become highly contaminated with chemicals (3). This leaves us with shrinking resources of sweet surface water. In the United States, the dependable supplies of this water are already dwindling in cities like New York and Los Angeles and states like New Mexico and Texas (3) |

Title | Hydrogen in Disordered and Amorphous Solids |
Author(s) | Bambakidis Jr., Gust;Bowman, Robert C |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer US, 1986. |
Description | X, 428 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | This is the second volume in the NATO ASI series dealing with the topic of hydrogen in solids. The first (V. B76, Metal Hydrides) appeared five years ago and focussed primarily on crystalline phases of hydrided metallic systems. In the intervening period, the amorphous solid state has become an area of intense research activity, encompassing both metallic and non-metallic, e.g. semiconducting, systems. At the same time the problem of storage of hydrogen, which motivated the first ASI, continues to be important. In the case of metallic systems, there were early indications that metallic glasses and disordered alloys may be more corrosion resistant, less susceptible to embrittlement by hydrogen and have a higher hydrogen mobility than ordered metals or intermetallics. All of these properties are desirable for hydrogen storage. Subsequent research has shown that thermodynamic instability is a severe problem in many amorphous metal hydrides. The present ASI has provided an appropriate forum to focus on these issues |

Title | Ocean Resources : Volume I: Assessment and Utilisation |
Author(s) | Ardus, D.A;Champ, M.A |
Publication | Dordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1990. |
Description | XVI, 330 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | Today western nations consume annually only a small percentage of their resources from the sea, despite the proclamation of Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZ) by many. In contrast, most Pacific Basin Countries obtain more than a quarter of their annual needs from the ocean. Determination of greater rewards from the development of marine resources is markedly inhibited by the limited technical abilities available to locate and assess them. Knowledge of Exclusive Economic Zone resources is schematic and generalised, and a detailed understanding of the geology and processes relating to the economic use of the seafloor is both fragmentary and very basic. Technology for mapping the mineral resources of continental shelves and ocean areas, except in active offshore hydrocarbon provinces, has been largely developed in pursuit of scientific objectives and competence to rapidly appraise economic potential is limited. Similarly, the capability to characterise and evaluate the other resources of the seas is rudimentary. The development of ocean resources will become increasingly urgent as the growth of the world population and the depletion of land reserves combine to enhance demand. Also, increasing environmental constraints will limit the availability of traditional land-based resources; nevertheless, new offshore development must proceed in a manner whereby the marine environment is not plundered but protected and conserved. The challenge to develop ocean resources with responsible environmental stewardship will require greater leadership than the development of the technologies of exploitation |

Title | Harvesting Polluted Waters : Waste Heat and Nutrient-Loaded Effluents in the Aquaculture |
Author(s) | Devik, O |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer US, 1976. |
Description | XII, 324 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | Waste heat from thermal power generation and waste minerals from domestic sewage are polluting rivers and coastal waters. It would thus be an important step forward if these pollutants could be made productive in aquaculture. The proposal to call a meeting of experts on Waste Heat and Nutrient-Loaded Efflu?? ents in Aquaculture came from Dr. Ole Devik. His proposal was accepted and sponsored by the Special Program Panel on Eco-Sciences, a subsidiary body of the NATO Science Committee. NATO has extensive programs in the scientific and environmental fields, and I would like to take this opportunity to give you a short outline of these programs. Collaboration and consultation between member countries of the Alliance have been of major concern to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization ever since it was established. In the mid-fifties a serious attempt was made to imple?? ment the collaboration in nonmilitary fields, and a report* from a committee of foreign ministers-Lester B. Pearson (Canada), Gaetano Martino (Italy), and Halvard Lange (Norway)-named scientific and technological cooperation as especially important. As a consequence of this report, a position as science adviser to the secretary-general of NATO (later changed to Assistant Secretary?? General for Scientific and Environmental Affairs) and a science committee composed of one highly qualified scientist from each of the member countries of the Alliance was established in 1958 |
