Title | Self-Organizing Maps |
Author(s) | Kohonen, Teuvo |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1995. |
Description | XVI, 362 p. 1 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | The Self-Organizing Map (SOM) algorithm was introduced by the author in 1981. Its theory and many applications form one of the major approaches to the contemporary artificial neural networks field, and new technolgies have already been based on it. The most important practical applications are in exploratory data analysis, pattern recognition, speech analysis, robotics, industrial and medical diagnostics, instrumentation, and control, and literally hundreds of other tasks. In this monograph the mathematical preliminaries, background, basic ideas, and implications are expounded in a clear, well-organized form, accessible without prior expert knowledge. Still the contents are handled with theoretical rigor |

Title | Automatic Speech Analysis and Recognition : Proceedings of the NATO Advanced Study Institute held at Bonas, France, June 29???July 10, 1981 |
Author(s) | Haton, Jean-Paul |
Publication | Dordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1982. |
Description | XII, 371 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book is the result of the second NATO Advanced Study Institute on speech processing held at the Chateau de Bonas, France, from June 29th to July 10th, 1981. This Institute provided a high-level coverage of the fields of speech transmission, recognition and understanding, which constitute important areas where research activity has re?? cently been associated with actual industrial developments. This book will therefore include both fundamental and applied topics. Ten survey papers by some of the best specialists in the field are included. They give an up-to-date presentation of several important problems in automatic speech processing. As a consequence the book can be considered as a reference manual on some important areas of automatic speech processing. The surveys are indicated by 'a * in the table of contents. This book also contains research papers corresponding to original works, which were presented during the panel sessions of the Institute. For the sake of clarity the book has been divided into five sections : 1. Speech Analysis and Transmission: An emphasis has been laid on the techniques of linear prediction (LPC), and the problems involved in the transmission of speech at various bit rates are addressed in details. 2. Acoustics and Phonetics : One'of the major bottleneck in the development of speech recogni?? tion systems remains the transcription of the continuous speech wave into some discrete strings or lattices of phonetic symbols. Two survey papers discuss this problem from different points of view and several practical systems are also described |

Title | Fractals |
Author(s) | Feder, Jens |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer US, 1988. |
Description | XXVI, 284 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | This lovely little book will take off and fly on its own power, but the author has asked me to write a few words, and one should not say no to a friend. Specific topics in fractal geometry and its applications have already benefited from several excellent surveys of moderate length, and gossip and preliminary drafts tell us that we shall soon see several monographic treatments of broader topics. For the teacher, however, these surveys and monographs are not enough, and an urgent need for more helpful books has been widely recognized. To write such a book is no easy task, but Jens Feder meets the challenge head on. His approach combines the old Viking's willingness to attack many difficulties at the same time, and the modern Norwegian's ability to achieve fine balance between diverging needs. lowe him special gratitude for presenting the main facts about R/ S analysis of long-run dependence; now a wide scientific public will have access to a large group of papers of mine that had until this day remained fairly confidential. Last but not least, we are all grateful to Jens for not having allowed undue personal modesty to deprive us of accounts of his own group's varied and excellent work. He did not attempt to say everything, but what he said is just fine. Benoit B. Mandelbrot Physics Department, IBM Thomas J |

Title | Cosmology, Physics, and Philosophy : Including a New Theory of Aesthetics |
Author(s) | Gal-Or, Benjamin |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer New York, 1987. |
Description | XXXVI, 522 p. 43 illus : online resource |
Abstract Note | What is unorthodox in this book? Much has happened in the last few years, especially in terms of the somewhat surpris?? ing rate at which the theories presented herein have been gaining increasing acceptance and support even by the most skeptical professionals. Nevertheless, the purpose of this up-dated Preface is not to tell the biographical and acceptance story behind this book, but to bring together some non-physical and non?? technical conclusions for those readers who find the physico-mathematical sections of this book too difficult to follow. A secondary purpose is to present here some newer conclu?? sions, especially in general philosophy and in aesthetics. Yet, the main physico?? philosophical conclusions presented in this book are not to be summarized here. For that purpose one must tum to the text itself. * * * The theories presented here have been developed in total isolation. They were never presented in "professional conferences", as most current writers do. Whether or not that was important remains to be seen. Hence, all I can state to critics and enthusiastic follow?? ers alike is the fact that I do not belong to any 'formal discipline', 'pressure group', or 'pro?? fessional organization' |

Author(s) | Simon, J.C;Haralick, R |
Publication | Dordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1981. |
Description | 603 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book is the consequence of a NATO ASI held at the Chateau de BONAS, from June 23 to July 4, 1980. It contains the tutorial lectures and some papers presented at the Institute. The book is divided in four sections: Issue.s-, of general interest. Some topics are broader than the proper techniques of image processing, such as complexity, clustering, topology, physiology; but they may be of interest ... Feature detect'ion and evaluation. The first level feature detections are examined: edges and textures. Reorganization and improvement of the results are obtained by relaxation and opti?? mization process. Cooperative process are examined. Scenes and shapes. concerns higher level problems, and representation of images such as map and line-drawings. Applications in remote sensing, scene analysis, of one or of a sequence of images. It is hoped that this book will serve to update a domain In fast evolution. Acknowledgment: This ASI, and this book, have been made possible by the financial support of the NATO Scientific Affairs Division, and the material support of INRIA and the Institut de Programmation of the Universite P. et M. Title | Fractals and Disordered Systems |
Author(s) | Bunde, Armin;Havlin, Shlomo |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1991. |
Description | XIV, 350 p. 163 illus : online resource |
Abstract Note | Fractals and disordered systems have recently become the focus of intense interest in research. This book discusses in great detail the effects of disorder on mesoscopic scales (fractures, aggregates, colloids, surfaces and interfaces, glasses, and polymers) and presents tools to describe them in mathematical language. A substantial part is devoted to the development of scaling theories based on fractal concepts. In 10 chapters written by leading experts in the field, including E. Stanley and B. Mandelbrot, the reader is introduced to basic concepts and techniques in disordered systems and is lead to the forefront of current research. In each chapter the connection between theory and experiment is emphasized, and a special chapter entitled "Fractals and Experiments" presents experimental studies of fractal systems in the laboratory. The book is written pedagogically. It can be used as a textbook for graduate students, by university teachers to prepare courses and seminars, and by active scientists who want to become familiar with a fascinating new field |
