Abstract Note | Among the various new directions in modern polymer science, the design and investigation of liquid crystal (LC) polymers have been the ones growing most actively and fruitfully. In spite of that, the possible formation of an anisotropic LC phase was only demonstrated theoretically for the first time in the 1950s by Onsager [1] and Flory [2], and then experimentally verified in the studies with polypeptides solutions. In essence, the studies of these LC lyotropic systems did not deviate from the theme of purely academic interest. It was at the beginning of the 1970s that the experimental "explosion" occurred, when aromatic polyamides were synthesized and their ability to form LC solutions in certain very aggressive solvents was discovered. The search for practical applications of such LC systems was crowned with the successful creation of the new generation of ultrastrong high-modulus ther?? mostable fibers, such as the Kevlar, due to the high degree of order of the macromolecules in the anisotropic LC state. In fact, these investigations coincided with the swift emergence on the practical "scene" of thermotropic low-molar-mass liquid crystals, with the use of these materials in microelectronics and electro optics (figures and let?? ters indicators, displays in personal computers, and flat TV, etc.). Polymer scientists also began to develop methods of synthesizing thermotropic LC polymers by incorporating mesogenic fragments in the main (main-chain LC polymers) or side branchings of the macromolecules (side-chain or comb?? shaped polymers) |

Abstract Note | Edwin J. Vandenberg, a long time researcher at the Research Center of Hercules Incorporated, was the 1981 winner of the American Chemical Society Award in Polymer Chemistry, sponsored by the Witco Chemical Corp. Following is the citation of the accomplishments which led to this award. "In recognition of his pioneering research that advanced polymer science and that led to the discovery and development of isotactic polypropylene, epichlorohydrin and propylene oxide elastomers, new polymerization catalysts, and the hydrogen method of controlling molecular weights of Ziegler polyolefins." It was my pleasure to arrange a symposium to celebrate this award at the Atlanta Meeting of the American Chemical Society on March 30, 1981. In considering the broad range of Vandenberg's contributions to polymer chemistry, it was decided to choose the subject of "Coordination Polymerization" for the symposium. This area is both one to which Vandenberg has made major contributions and one of great industrial and scientific interest. Since Vandenberg has been involved in coordination polymerization in both ring-opening and a-olefin type polymerizations, both were covered in the symposium, whose program follows. 1. "The Polymerization of 1,2-Epoxides Catalyzed by the Condensation Products of Metal-Containing Compounds with Alkylphosphates", T. Description | IX, 405 p. 137 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book is derived from a Symposium held at the 190th National American Chemical Society Meeting, which was held in the Fall of 1985, in Chicago, and was sponsored by the Division of Polymeric Materials: Science & Engineering. This Symposium was, in turn, a follow-up on an earlier one held in Houston, TX, in the Spring of 1980, which was pub?? lished as the book ??Biomedical and Dental Applications of Polymers?? [Plenum Press, New York, 1981]. In that earlier book, our opening Preface passage quoted King David, ??1 will praise Thee; for I am fearfully and made . ?????? ??? (Psalm 139:14). As we noted five years ago, sickness wonderfully of many types does occur in our wonderfully made bodies, but much human suffering can be aided by biomedical polymers. That earlier book con?? sidered much of the fantastic progress that had been made in biomedical polymers during the previous quarter century and brought many of these topics up to date. That Symposium, and book, noted that much help was available for the varied afflictions and problems that sometimes beset, and upset, our God-given bodies, and the promise of new and important advances was held out as a shining ray of hope amidst the gloom of sickness and affliction. The present volume is an update on the advances that have occurred since the 1981 book and sets the stage for even greater advances in the future |

Title | Crystallization of Polymers |
Author(s) | Dosi??re, Marcel |
Publication | Dordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1993. |
Description | XVI, 653 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | Since the discovery that polymer single crystals are composed of chain folded macromolecules in 1957, the crystallization of polymers has attracted considerable interest and still provides fascinating and fruitful areas of research. Only a few books have been fully devoted to the crystallization of polymers in the past. This book contains the proceedings of the NATO ARW devoted to the `Crystallization of Polymers' which took place in September 1992 at the University of Mons-Hainaut (Belgium). In view of the variety of papers devoted to the crystallization of polymers, this book will be used in the next few years as a reference book for scientists concerned in the field of polymer physical chemistry. Crystallization of Polymers is mainly devoted to the experimental and theoretical study of the crystallization of synthetic polymers. As a kinetic study of the growth of polymer crystals should always be preceded by a morphological or a structural investigation, the structure, the morphology of polymer crystals and more particularly the lamellar and supralamellar organizations, as well as the nature of the crystal amorphous interface are reviewed and discussed |
