TitleUsing MSC/NASTRAN : Statics and Dynamics
Author(s)Cifuentes, Arturo O
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer New York, 1989.
DescriptionXIV, 458 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe idea of writing this book came up one night while having dinner with Ventura at the Crocodile Cafe in Pasadena. This was really a joint project, that could have turned into a nightmare without her support, encouragement, and expertise in personal computers. For all these things, and for tolerating my sometimes single-minded attention, I am very grateful to her. I am also very much indebted to six good friends, Paul Burridge, Mladen Chargin, Gary Dilley, Carl Hennrich, Hector Jensen and Mark Miller, who read the entire manuscript of this book and made many useful suggestions. I also want to thank Burt Alperson for his guidance and advice during the preparation of this book. Finally, I thank the Department of Civil Engineering of the University of Southern California for the support provided during the course of this project, and my students of all these years for asking tough questions. TitleBuckling of Shells : Proceedings of a State-of-the-Art Colloquium, Universit??t Stuttgart, Germany, May 6???7, 1982
Author(s)Ramm, Ekkehard
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1982.
DescriptionXV, 672 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThin shells are very popular structures in many different branches of engineering. There are the domes, water and cooling towers, the contain?? ments in civil engineering, the pressure vessels and pipes in mechanical and nuclear engineering, storage tanks and platform components in marine and offshore engineering, the car bodies in the automobile industry, planes, rockets and space structures in aeronautical engineering, to mention only a few examples of the broad spectrum of application. In addition there is the large applied mechanics group involved in all the computational and experimental work in this area. Thin shells are in a way optimal structures. They play the role of??the "primadonnas" among all kinds of structures. Their performance can be extraordinary, but they can also be very sensitive. The susceptibility to buckling is a typical example. David Bushnell says in his recent review paper entitled "Buckling of Shells - Pitfall for DeSigners": "To the layman buckling is a mysterious, perhaps even awe inspiring phenomenon that transforms objects originally imbued with symmetrical beauty into junk"

Abstract NoteThe idea of having a conference in Padova describing the results obtained by the Galileo spacecraft and the characteristics of the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo began in 1995, when a number of colleagues from both sides of the Atlantic began exchanging suggestions and ideas. Looking at the schedules of the two teams, it was clear that the beginning of January 1997 would be a good time to hold the conference; these dates also luckily coincided with the dates of the memorable discovery of the Medicean moons of Jupiter by Galileo Galilei in Padova in 1610. To emphasize these three elements, the name of the conference was then proposed and accepted by the involved parties: NASA and JPL in the United States, the German space agency DARA, the University of Padova, and the Astronomical Observatory in Padova. I wish to recall a few key dates: In January 1610, Galileo--from his house in Padova--had the first hint of three and then four stars connected to Jupiter. In December 1995, the probe released from the spacecraft entered the atmosphere of Jupiter, and the spacecraft entered orbit about Jupiter. These extraordinary events were followed at JPL by a number of representatives of many institutions and space agencies. In June 1996, the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo was inaugurated by the King of Spain Juan Carlos I, in the presence of Prof. Luigi Berlinguer, Minister of University and Science. These ceremonies occurred as the spacecraft started touring the moon Europa

PublicationNew York, NY, Springer New York, 1986.
DescriptionXII, 511 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe Joint Institute for Aeronautics and Acoustics at Stanford University was established in October 1973 to provide an academic environment for long-term cooperative research between Stanford and NASA Ames Research Center. Since its establishment, the Institute has conducted theoretical and experimental work in the areas of aerodynamics, acoustics, fluid mechanics, flight dynamics, guidance and control, and human factors. This research has involved Stanford faculty, research associates, graduate students, and many distinguished visitors in collaborative efforts with the research staff of NASA Ames Research Center. The occasion of the Institute's tenth anniversary was used to reflect back on where that research has brought us, and to consider where our endeavors should be directed next. Thus, an International Symposium was held to review recent advances in the fields relevant to the activities of the Institute and to discuss the areas of research to be undertaken in the future. This anniversary was also chosen as an opportunity to honor one of the Institute's founders and its director, Professor Krishnamurty Karamcheti. It has been his crea?? tive inspiration that has provided the ideal research environment at the Joint Institute

TitleHigh Reynolds Number Flows Using Liquid and Gaseous Helium : Discussion of Liquid and Gaseous Helium as Test Fluids Including papers from The Seventh Oregon Conference on Low Temperature Physics, University of Oregon, October 23???25, 1989
Author(s)Donnelly, Russell J
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer New York, 1991.
DescriptionXI, 284 p : online resource
Abstract NoteLiquid helium has been studied for its intrinsic interest through much of the 20th century. In the past decade, much has been learned about heat transfer in liquid helium because of the need to cool superconducting magnets and other devices. The topic of the Seventh Oregon Conference on Low Temperature Physics was an applied one, namely the use of liquid and gaseous helium to generate high Reynolds number flows. The low kinematic viscosity of liquid helium automatically makes high Reynolds numbers accessible and the question addressed in this conference was to explore various possibilities to see what practical devices might be built using liquid or gaseous helium. There are a number of possibilities: construction of a wind tunnel using critical helium gas, free surface testing, low speed flow facilities using helium I and helium ll. At the time of the conference, most consideration had been given to the last possibility because it seemed both possible and useful to build a flow facility which could reach unprecedented Reynolds numbers. Such a device could be useful in pure research for studying turbulence, and in applied research for testing models much as is done in a water tunnel. In order to examine these possibilities in detail, we invited a wide range of experts to Eugene in October 1989 to present papers on their own specialties and to listen to presentations on the liquid helium proposals

TitleHigh Angle of Attack Aerodynamics : Subsonic, Transonic, and Supersonic Flows
Author(s)Rom, Josef
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer New York, 1992.
DescriptionXIII, 399 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe aerodynamics of aircraft at high angles of attack is a subject which is being pursued diligently, because the modern agile fighter aircraft and many of the current generation of missiles must perform well at very high incidence, near and beyond stall. However, a comprehensive presentation of the methods and results applicable to the studies of the complex aerodynamics at high angle of attack has not been covered in monographs or textbooks. This book is not the usual textbook in that it goes beyond just presenting the basic theoretical and experimental know-how, since it contains reference material to practical calculation methods and technical and experimental results which can be useful to the practicing aerospace engineers and scientists. It can certainly be used as a text and reference book for graduate courses on subjects related to high angles of attack aerodynamics and for topics related to three-dimensional separation in viscous flow courses. In addition, the book is addressed to the aerodynamicist interested in a comprehensive reference to methods of analysis and computations of high angle of attack flow phenomena and is written for the aerospace scientist and engineer who is familiar with the basic concepts of viscous and inviscid flows and with computational methods used in fluid dynamics

TitleIUTAM Symposium on Nonlinear Instability and Transition in Three-Dimensional Boundary Layers : Proceedings of the IUTAM Symposium held in Manchester, U.K., 17???20 July 1995
Author(s)Duck, Peter W;Hall, Philip
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1996.
DescriptionXVIII, 446 p : online resource
Abstract NoteMost fluid flows of practical importance are fully three-dimensional, so the non-linear instability properties of three-dimensional flows are of particular interest. In some cases the three-dimensionality may have been caused by a finite amplitude disturbance whilst, more usually, the unperturbed state is three-dimensional. Practical applications where transition is thought to be associated with non-linearity in a three- dimensional flow arise, for example, in aerodynamics (swept wings, engine nacelles, etc.), turbines and aortic blood flow. Here inviscid `cross-flow' disturbances as well as Tollmien-Schlichting and G??rtler vortices can all occur simultaneously and their mutual non-linear behaviour must be understood if transition is to be predicted. The non-linear interactions are so complex that usually fully numerical or combined asymptotic/numerical methods must be used. Moreover, in view of the complexity of the instability processes, there is also a growing need for detailed and accurate experimental information. Carefully conducted tests allow us to identify those elements of a particular problem which are dominant. This assists in both the formulation of a relevant theoretical problem and the subsequent physical validation of predictions. It should be noted that the demands made upon the skills of the experimentalist are high and that the tests can be extremely sophisticated - often making use of the latest developments in flow diagnostic techniques, automated high speed data gathering, data analysis, fast processing and presentation

TitleStudies in Nonlinear Aeroelasticity
Author(s)Dowell, Earl H;Ilgamov, Marat
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer New York, 1988.
DescriptionXVI, 455 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe great bulk of the literature on aeroelasticity is devoted to linear models. The?? oretical work relies heavily on linear mathematical concepts, and experimental results are commonly interpreted by assuming that the physical model behaves in a linear manner. Nevertheless, significant work has been done in nonlinear aero?? elasticity, and one may expect this trend to accelerate for several reasons: our ability to compute has increased at an astonishing rate; as linear concepts have been assimilated widely, there is a natural increase in interest in the foundations of nonlinear modeling; and, finally, some phenomena long recognized to be of interest, but beyond the effective range of linear models, are now known to be essentially nonlinear in nature. In this volume, an exhaustive review of the literature is not attempted. Rather the emphasis is on fundamental ideas and a representative selection of problems. Despite obvious successes in research on problems of aeroelasticity and the existence of a broad literature, including a number of excellent monographs, up to now little attention has been devoted to a general nonlinear theory of interac?? tion. For the most part nonlinearity has been considered either solely in the description of the behavior of a shell or in the description of the motion of a gas
