TitleOrdered Sets : Proceedings of the NATO Advanced Study Institute held at Banff, Canada, August 28 to September 12, 1981
Author(s)Rival, Ivan
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1982.
Description978 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThis volume contains all twenty-three of the principal survey papers presented at the Symposium on Ordered Sets held at Banff, Canada from August 28 to September 12, 1981. The Symposium was supported by grants from the NATO Advanced Study Institute programme, the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, the Canadian Mathematical Society Summer Research Institute programme, and the University of Calgary. tve are very grateful to these Organizations for their considerable interest and support. Over forty years ago on April 15, 1938 the first Symposium on Lattice Theory was held in Charlottesville, U.S.A. in conjunction with a meeting of the American Mathematical Society. The principal addresses on that occasion were Lattices and their applications by G. Birkhoff, On the application of structure theory to groups by O. Ore, and The representation of Boolean algebras by M. H. Stone. The texts of these addresses and three others by R. Baer, H. M. MacNeille, and K. Menger appear in the Bulletin of the American Mathematical Society, Volume 44, 1938. In those days the theory of ordered sets, and especially lattice theory was described as a "vigorous and promising younger brother of group theory." Some early workers hoped that lattice?? theoretic methods would lead to solutions of important problems in group theory

TitleMacMath 9.2 : A Dynamical Systems Software Package for the Macintosh???
Author(s)Hubbard, John H;West, Beverly H
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer New York, 1993.
DescriptionVII, 162 p. 1 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteMacMath is a scientific toolkit for the Macintosh computer consisting of twelve graphics programs. It supports mathematical computation and experimentation in dynamical systems, both for differential equations and for iteration. The MacMath package was designed to accompany the textbooks Differential Equations: A Dynamical Systems Approach Part I & II. The text and software was developed for a junior-senior level course in applicable mathematics at Cornell University, in order to take advantage of excellent and easily accessible graphics. MacMath addresses differential equations and iteration such as: analyzer, diffeq, phase plane, diffeq 3D views, numerical methods, periodic differential equations, cascade, 2D iteration, eigenfinder, jacobidraw, fourier, planets. These versatile programs greatly enhance the understanding of the mathematics in these topics. Qualitative analysis of the picture leads to quantitative results and even to new mathematics. This new edition includes the latest version of the Mac Math diskette, 9.2

TitleGrid Generation Methods
Author(s)Liseikin, Vladimir D
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1999.
DescriptionXVI, 363 p. 1 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book is an introduction to structured and unstructured grid methods in scientific computing, addressing graduate students, scientists as well as practitioners. Basic local and integral grid quality measures are formulated and new approaches to mesh generation are reviewed. In addition to the content of the successful first edition, a more detailed and practice oriented description of monitor metrics in Beltrami and diffusion equations is given for generating adaptive numerical grids. Also, new techniques developed by the author are presented, in particular a technique based on the inverted form of Beltrami???s partial differential equations with respect to control metrics. This technique allows the generation of adaptive grids for a wide variety of computational physics problems, including grid clustering to given function values and gradients, grid alignment with given vector fields, and combinations thereof. Applications of geometric methods to the analysis of numerical grid behavior as well as grid generation based on the minimization of functionals of smoothness, conformality, orthogonality, energy, and alignment complete the second edition of this outstanding compendium on grid generation methods

TitleLattice-Ordered Groups : An Introduction
Author(s)Anderson, M.E;Feil, T.H
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1988.
Description204 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe study of groups equipped with a compatible lattice order ("lattice-ordered groups" or "I!-groups") has arisen in a number of different contexts. Examples of this include the study of ideals and divisibility, dating back to the work of Dedekind and continued by Krull; the pioneering work of Hahn on totally ordered abelian groups; and the work of Kantorovich and other analysts on partially ordered function spaces. After the Second World War, the theory of lattice-ordered groups became a subject of study in its own right, following the publication of fundamental papers by Birkhoff, Nakano and Lorenzen. The theory blossomed under the leadership of Paul Conrad, whose important papers in the 1960s provided the tools for describing the structure for many classes of I!-groups in terms of their convex I!-subgroups. A particularly significant success of this approach was the generalization of Hahn's embedding theorem to the case of abelian lattice-ordered groups, work done with his students John Harvey and Charles Holland. The results of this period are summarized in Conrad's "blue notes" [C]

TitleGraph Symmetry : Algebraic Methods and Applications
Author(s)Hahn, Gena;Sabidussi, Gert
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1997.
DescriptionXX, 418 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe last decade has seen two parallel developments, one in computer science, the other in mathematics, both dealing with the same kind of combinatorial structures: networks with strong symmetry properties or, in graph-theoretical language, vertex-transitive graphs, in particular their prototypical examples, Cayley graphs. In the design of large interconnection networks it was realised that many of the most fre?? quently used models for such networks are Cayley graphs of various well-known groups. This has spawned a considerable amount of activity in the study of the combinatorial properties of such graphs. A number of symposia and congresses (such as the bi-annual IWIN, starting in 1991) bear witness to the interest of the computer science community in this subject. On the mathematical side, and independently of any interest in applications, progress in group theory has made it possible to make a realistic attempt at a complete description of vertex-transitive graphs. The classification of the finite simple groups has played an important role in this respect

TitleDifference Sets, Sequences and their Correlation Properties
Author(s)Pott, A;Kumar, P. Vijay;Helleseth, Tor;Jungnickel, Dieter
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1999.
DescriptionVIII, 448 p. 7 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteThe explanation of the formal duality of Kerdock and Preparata codes is one of the outstanding results in the field of applied algebra in the last few years. This result is related to the discovery of large sets of quad?? riphase sequences over Z4 whose correlation properties are better than those of the best binary sequences. Moreover, the correlation properties of sequences are closely related to difference properties of certain sets in (cyclic) groups. It is the purpose of this book to illustrate the connection between these three topics. Most articles grew out of lectures given at the NATO Ad?? vanced Study Institute on "Difference sets, sequences and their correlation properties". This workshop took place in Bad Windsheim (Germany) in August 1998. The editors thank the NATO Scientific Affairs Division for the generous support of this workshop. Without this support, the present collection of articles would not have been realized

TitleComputational Electromagnetics and Its Applications
Author(s)Campbell, Thomas G;Nicolaides, Roy A;Salas, Manuel D
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1997.
DescriptionVIII, 320 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThis volume contains the proceedings of the first ICASE/LaRC Work?? shop on Computational Electromagnetics and Its Applications conducted by the Institute for Computer Applications in Science and Engineering and NASA Langley Research Center. We had several goals in mind when we decided, jointly with the Elec?? tromagnetics Research Branch, to organize this workshop on Computa?? tional Electromagnetics ( CEM). Among our goals were a desire to obtain an overview of the current state of CEM, covering both algorithms and ap?? plications and their effect on NASA's activities in this area. In addition, we wanted to provide an attractive setting for computational scientists with expertise in other fields, especially computational fluid dynamics (CFD), to observe the algorithms and tools of CEM at work. Our expectation was that scientists from both fields would discover mutually beneficial inter?? connections and relationships. Another goal was to learn of progress in solution algorithms for electromagnetic optimization and design problems; such problems make extensive use of field solvers and computational effi?? ciency is at a premium. To achieve these goals we assembled the renowned group of speakers from academia and industry whose talks are contained in this volume. The papers are printed in the same order in which the talks were pre?? sented at the meeting. The first paper is an overview of work currently being performed in the Electromagnetic Research Branch at the Langley Research Center

TitleMaximum Entropy and Bayesian Methods : Boise, Idaho, USA, 1997 Proceedings of the 17th International Workshop on Maximum Entropy and Bayesian Methods of Statistical Analysis
Author(s)Erickson, G;Rychert, Joshua T;Smith, C.R
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1998.
DescriptionIX, 302 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThis volume has its origin in the Seventeenth International Workshop on Maximum Entropy and Bayesian Methods, MAXENT 97. The workshop was held at Boise State University in Boise, Idaho, on August 4 -8, 1997. As in the past, the purpose of the workshop was to bring together researchers in different fields to present papers on applications of Bayesian methods (these include maximum entropy) in science, engineering, medicine, economics, and many other disciplines. Thanks to significant theoretical advances and the personal computer, much progress has been made since our first Workshop in 1981. As indicated by several papers in these proceedings, the subject has matured to a stage in which computational algorithms are the objects of interest, the thrust being on feasibility, efficiency and innovation. Though applications are proliferating at a staggering rate, some in areas that hardly existed a decade ago, it is pleasing that due attention is still being paid to foundations of the subject. The following list of descriptors, applicable to papers in this volume, gives a sense of its contents: deconvolution, inverse problems, instrument (point-spread) function, model comparison, multi sensor data fusion, image processing, tomography, reconstruction, deformable models, pattern recognition, classification and group analysis, segmentation/edge detection, brain shape, marginalization, algorithms, complexity, Ockham's razor as an inference tool, foundations of probability theory, symmetry, history of probability theory and computability. MAXENT 97 and these proceedings could not have been brought to final form without the support and help of a number of people

TitlePolytopes : Abstract, Convex and Computational
Author(s)Bisztriczky, Tibor;McMullen, Peter;Schneider, Rolf;Weiss, Asia Ivic
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1994.
DescriptionXIX, 507 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe aim of this volume is to reinforce the interaction between the three main branches (abstract, convex and computational) of the theory of polytopes. The articles include contributions from many of the leading experts in the field, and their topics of concern are expositions of recent results and in-depth analyses of the development (past and future) of the subject. The subject matter of the book ranges from algorithms for assignment and transportation problems to the introduction of a geometric theory of polyhedra which need not be convex. With polytopes as the main topic of interest, there are articles on realizations, classifications, Eulerian posets, polyhedral subdivisions, generalized stress, the Brunn--Minkowski theory, asymptotic approximations and the computation of volumes and mixed volumes. For researchers in applied and computational convexity, convex geometry and discrete geometry at the graduate and postgraduate levels
