TitleEnvironmental Radiation Effects on Mammals : A Dynamical Modeling Approach
Author(s)Smirnova, Olga A
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer New York, 2010.
DescriptionXIII, 214 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThis text is devoted to the theoretical studies of radiation effects on mammals. It uses the framework of developed deterministic mathematical models to investigate the effects of both acute and chronic irradiation in a wide range of doses and dose rates on vital body systems including hematopoiesis, small intestine and humoral immunity, as well as on the development of autoimmune diseases. Thus, these models can contribute to the development of the system and quantitative approaches in radiation biology and ecology. This text is also of practical use. Its modeling studies of the dynamics of granulocytopoiesis and thrombocytopoiesis in humans testify to the efficiency of employment of the developed models in the investigation and prediction of radiation effects on these hematopoietic lines. These models, as well as the properly identified models of other vital body systems, could provide a better understanding of the radiation risks to health. The modeling predictions will enable the implementation of more effective preventive and protective measures for people residing in areas with elevated radiation background and astronauts on long-term space missions. Lastly, the models of the radiation-induced mortality established the theoretical foundations of a new individual-based approach to radiation risk assessment. These models thus enable one to predict the mortality dynamics and average life-span shortening for individuals and populations exposed to acute and low-level chronic radiation. Because of its theoretical and practical benefits, this book is as useful for academics, scientists and researchers working in the field of mathematical modeling of biological systems as it is for those working in the fields of radiation biology, ecology and medicine. It is equally useful for Aerospace companies and various corporations that contend with the problems of environmental protection and radiation safety

TitlePrinciples of Lasers
Author(s)Svelto, Orazio
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer US, 2010.
DescriptionXXII, 620 p. 292 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteThis new Fifth Edition of Principles of Lasers incorporates corrections to the previous edition. The text???s essential mission remains the same: to provide a wide-ranging yet unified description of laser behavior, physics, technology, and current applications. Dr. Svelto emphasizes the physical rather than the mathematical aspects of lasers, and presents the subject in the simplest terms compatible with a correct physical understanding. Praise for earlier editions: "Professor Svelto is himself a longtime laser pioneer and his text shows the breadth of his broad acquaintance with all aspects of the field ??? Anyone mastering the contents of this book will be well prepared to understand advanced treatises and research papers in laser science and technology." (Arthur L. Schawlow, 1981 Nobel Laureate in Physics) "Already well established as a self-contained introduction to the physics and technology of lasers ??? Professor Svelto???s book, in this lucid translation by David Hanna, can be strongly recommended for self-study or teaching at the final-year undergraduate or first-year post-graduate levels." (Physics Bulletin) "A thorough understanding of this book in conjunction with one of the existing volumes on laser safety will go a long way in providing the health physicist with the understanding he needs ??? Highly recommended." (Health Physics) "Introduces laser science and technology with the accessibility appropriate for the nonspecialist and the enthusiasm of the pioneer." (Laser Focus) "A very good introduction to laser theory and practice ??? aimed at upper-level undergraduate students. It is logically organized and easy to read ??? Most of the basic mathematical framework needed to understand this evolving field is presented. Every chapter contains a good set of problems, answers to some of which are given in the back." (Sci-Tech News) Orazio Svelto is Professor of Quantum Electronics at the Polytechnic Institute of Milan and Director of the Quantum Electronics Center of the Italian National Research Council. His research has covered a wide range of activity in the field of laser physics and quantum electronics, starting from the very beginning of these disciplines. This activity includes ultrashort-pulse generation and applications, development of laser resonators and mode-selection techniques, laser applications in biology and medicine, and development of solid-state lasers. Professor Svelto is the author of more than 150 scientific papers and his researches have been the subject of more than 50 invited papers and international conferences. He has served as a program chair of the IX International Quantum Electronics Conference (1976), as a chair of the European program committee for CLEO ???85 and CLEO ???90, and he was general co-chair for the first CLEO-Europe Conference (1994). He is an elected member of the Italian "Accademia dei XL" and a Fellow of the IEEE

TitleRadiation Physics for Medical Physicists
Author(s)Podgorsak, Ervin B
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2006.
DescriptionXXII, 438 p. 115 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book summarizes the radiation physics knowledge that professionals working in medical physics need to master for efficient and safe dealings with ionizing radiation. It contains eight chapters, each chapter covering a specific group of subjects related to radiation physics and is intended as a textbook for a course in radiation physics in medical-physics graduate programs. However, the book may also be of interest to the large number of professionals, not only medical physicists, who in their daily occupations deal with various aspects of medical physics and find a need to improve their understanding of radiation physics. The main target audience for this book is graduate students studying for M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in medical physics, who have to possess the necessary physics and mathematics background knowledge to be able to follow and master the complete textbook. Medical residents, technology students and biomedical engineering students may find certain sections too challenging or esoteric, yet they will find many sections interesting and useful in their studies. Candidates preparing for professional certification exams in any of the medical physics subspecialties should find the material useful, and some of the material would also help candidates preparing for certification examinations in medical dosimetry or radiation-related medical specialties. Numerous textbooks are available covering the various subspecialties of medical physics but they generally make a transition from the elementary basic physics directly into the intricacies of the given medical physics subspecialty. The intent of this textbook is to provide the missing link between the elementary physics on the one hand and the physics of the subspecialties on the other hand

DescriptionXXXIV, 745 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThis well-received textbook and reference summarizes the basic knowledge of atomic, nuclear, and radiation physics that professionals working in medical physics and biomedical engineering need for efficient and safe use of ionizing radiation. Concentrating on the underlying principles of radiation physics, it covers the prerequisite knowledge for medical physics courses on the graduate and post-graduate levels in radiotherapy physics, radiation dosimetry, imaging physics, and health physics, thus providing the link between elementary physics on the one hand and the intricacies of the medical physics specialties on the other hand. This expanded and revised second edition offers reorganized and expanded coverage. Several of the original chapters have been split into two with new sections added for completeness and better flow. New chapters on Coulomb scattering; on energy transfer and energy absorption in photon interactions; and on waveguide theory have been added in recognition of their importance. Others training for professions that deal with ionizing radiation in diagnosis and treatment as well as medical residents, students of technology and dosimetry, and biomedical engineering will find many sections interesting and useful for their studies. It also serves as excellent preparatory materials for candidates taking professional certification examinations in medical physics, medical dosimetry, and in medical specialties such as radiotherapy, diagnostic radiology, and nuclear medicine. From reviews of the first edition: "Any instructor teaching an introductory graduate-level course on the principles of medical physics should consider this book for adoption as a text??? cover[s] the principles themselves, and it covers them very well." (Medical Physics, January 2006) "??? a delight and ready-reference also to seasoned practitioners??? This textbook, based on notes the author ???developed over the past 25 years of teaching radiation physics to MSc and PhD students in medical physics at McGill University??? is a real gem for the bookshelf of anyone already professional working in the radiation sciences???" TitleParticle Accelerators: From Big Bang Physics to Hadron Therapy
Author(s)Amaldi, Ugo
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2015.
DescriptionXVII, 284 p. 145 illus., 28 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteRather than focusing on the contributions of theoretical physicists to the understanding of the subatomic world and of the beginning of the universe - as most popular science books on particle physics do - this book is different in that, firstly, the main focus is on machine inventors and builders and, secondly, particle accelerators are not only described as discovery tools but also for their contributions to tumour diagnosis and therapy. The characters of well-known (e.g. Ernest Lawrence) and mostly unknown actors (e.g. Nicholas Christofilos) are outlined, including many colourful quotations. The overall picture supports the author???s motto: ???Physics is beautiful and useful???. ?? Advance appraisal: ???Accelerators go all the way from the unique and gargantuan Large Hadron Collider to thousands of smaller versions in hospitals and industry. Ugo Amaldi has experience across the range. He has worked at CERN and has for many years been driving the application of accelerators in medicine. This is a must-read introduction to this frontier of modern technology, written beautifully by a world expert.??? Frank Close, Professor of Physics at Oxford University author of "The Infinity Puzzle" ???This book should be read by school teachers and all those interested in the exploration of the microcosm and its relation to cosmology, and in the use of accelerators for medical applications. With a light hand and without formulae the author easily explains complicated matters, spicing up the text with amusing historical anecdotes. His reputation as an outstanding scientist in all the fields treated guarantees high standards.??? Herwig Schopper, former CERN Director General?? author of "LEP - The Lord of the Collider Rings at CERN" ???This book tells the story of modern physics with an unusual emphasis on the machine-builders who made it all possible, and their machines.?? Learning to accelerate?? particles has enabled physicists to probe the subatomic world and gain a deeper understanding of the cosmos.?? It has also brought numerous benefits to medicine, from the primitive X-ray machines of over a century ago to today's developments in hadron therapy for cancer.?? Amaldi tells this story in a most fascinating way.??? Edward Witten, Professor of ??Mathematical Physics at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton;??Fields Medal (1990)
