TitleClassical and Quantum Physics : 60 Years Alberto Ibort Fest Geometry, Dynamics, and Control
Author(s)Marmo, G;Mart??n de Diego, David;Mu??oz Lecanda, Miguel
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2019.
DescriptionXXVI, 374 p. 46 illus., 14 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis proceedings is based on the interdisciplinary workshop held in Madrid, 5-9 March 2018, dedicated to Alberto Ibort on his 60th birthday. Alberto has great and significantly contributed to many fields of mathematics and physics, always with highly original and innovative ideas. Most of Albertos???s scientific activity has been motivated by geometric ideas, concepts and tools that are deeply related to the framework of classical dynamics and quantum mechanics. Let us mention some of the fields of expertise of Alberto Ibort: Geometric Mechanics; Constrained Systems; Variational Principles; Multisymplectic structures for field theories; Super manifolds; Inverse problem for Bosonic and Fermionic systems; Quantum Groups, Integrable systems, BRST Symmetries; Implicit differential equations; Yang-Mills Theories; BiHamiltonian Systems; Topology Change and Quantum Boundary Conditions; Classical and Quantum Control; Orthogonal Polynomials; Quantum Field Theory and Noncommutative Spaces; Classical and Quantum Tomography; Quantum Mechanics on phase space; Wigner-Weyl formalism; Lie-Jordan Algebras, Classical and Quantum; Quantum-to-Classical transition; Contraction of Associative Algebras; contact geometry, among many others. In each contribution, one may find not only technical novelties but also completely new way of looking at the considered problems. Even an experienced reader, reading Alberto's contributions on his field of expertise, will find new perspectives on the considered topic. His enthusiasm is happily contagious, for this reason he has had, and still has, very bright students wishing to elaborate their PhD thesis under his guidance. What is more impressive, is the broad list of rather different topics on which he has contributed

TitleThe Landscape of Theoretical Physics: A Global View : From Point Particles to the Brane World and Beyond in Search of a Unifying Principle
Author(s)Pavsic, M
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 2002.
DescriptionXXII, 374 p : online resource
Abstract NoteToday many important directions of research are being pursued more or less independently of each other. These are, for instance, strings and mem branes, induced gravity, embedding of spacetime into a higher dimensional space, the brane world scenario, the quantum theory in curved spaces, Fock Schwinger proper time formalism, parametrized relativistic quantum the ory, quantum gravity, wormholes and the problem of ???time machines???, spin and supersymmetry, geometric calculus based on Clifford algebra, various interpretations of quantum mechanics including the Everett interpretation, and the recent important approach known as ???decoherence???. A big problem, as I see it, is that various people thoroughly investigate their narrow field without being aware of certain very close relations to other fields of research. What we need now is not only to see the trees but also the forest. In the present book I intend to do just that: to carry out a first approximation to a synthesis of the related fundamental theories of physics. I sincerely hope that such a book will be useful to physicists. From a certain viewpoint the book could be considered as a course in the oretical physics in which the foundations of all those relevant fundamental theories and concepts are attempted to be thoroughly reviewed. Unsolved problems and paradoxes are pointed out. I show that most of those ap proaches have a common basis in the theory of unconstrained membranes. The very interesting and important concept of membrane space, the tensor calculus in and functional transformations in are discussed

TitleClifford Algebras and their Applications in Mathematical Physics : Proceedings of the Third Conference held at Deinze, Belgium, 1993
Author(s)Brackx, F;Delanghe, R;Serras, H
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1993.
DescriptionXII, 411 p. 2 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteThis International Conference on Clifford AlgebrfU and Their Application, in Math?? ematical Phy,ic, is the third in a series of conferences on this theme, which started at the Univer, ity of Kent in Canterbury in 1985 and was continued at the Univer,iU de, Science, et Technique, du Languedoc in Montpellier in 1989. Since the start of this series of Conferences the research fields under consideration have evolved quite a lot. The number of scientific papers on Clifford Algebra, Clifford Analysis and their impact on the modelling of physics phenomena have increased tremendously and several new books on these topics were published. We were very pleased to see old friends back and to wellcome new guests who by their inspiring talks contributed fundamentally to tracing new paths for the future development of this research area. The Conference was organized in Deinze, a small rural town in the vicinity of the University town Gent. It was hosted by De Ceder, a vacation and seminar center in a green area, a typical landscape of Flanders's "plat pays" . The Conference was attended by 61 participants coming from 18 countries; there were 10 main talks on invitation, 37 contributions accepted by the Organizing Com?? mittee and a poster session. There was also a book display of Kluwer Academic Publishers. As in the Proceedings of the Canterbury and Montpellier conferences we have grouped the papers accordingly to the themes they are related to: Clifford Algebra, Clifford Analysis, Classical Mechanics, Mathematical Physics and Physics Models

TitleQuantum and Non-Commutative Analysis : Past, Present and Future Perspectives
Author(s)Araki, Huzihiro;Ito, Keiichi R;Kishimoto, Akitaka;Ojima, Izumi
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1993.
DescriptionXII, 464 p : online resource
Abstract NoteIn the past decade, there has been a sudden and vigorous development in a number of research areas in mathematics and mathematical physics, such as theory of operator algebras, knot theory, theory of manifolds, infinite dimensional Lie algebras and quantum groups (as a new topics), etc. on the side of mathematics, quantum field theory and statistical mechanics on the side of mathematical physics. The new development is characterized by very strong relations and interactions between different research areas which were hitherto considered as remotely related. Focussing on these new developments in mathematical physics and theory of operator algebras, the International Oji Seminar on Quantum Analysis was held at the Kansai Seminar House, Kyoto, JAPAN during June 25-29, 1992 by a generous sponsorship of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science and the Fujihara Foundation of Science, as a workshop of relatively small number of (about 50) invited participants. This was followed by an open Symposium at RIMS, described below by its organizer, A. Kishimoto. The Oji Seminar began with two key-note addresses, one by V.F.R. Jones on Spin Models in Knot Theory and von Neumann Algebras and by A. Jaffe on Where Quantum Field Theory Has Led. Subsequently topics such as Subfactors and Sector Theory, Solvable Models of Statistical Mechanics, Quantum Field Theory, Quantum Groups, and Renormalization Group Ap?? proach, are discussed. Towards the end, a panel discussion on Where Should Quantum Analysis Go? was held

TitleFinite and Locally Finite Groups
Author(s)Hartley, B;Seitz, G.M;Borovik, A.V;Bryant, R.M
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1995.
DescriptionXII, 458 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThis volume contains the proceedings of the NATO Advanced Study Institute on Finite and Locally Finite Groups held in Istanbul, Turkey, 14-27 August 1994, at which there were about 90 participants from some 16 different countries. The ASI received generous financial support from the Scientific Affairs Division of NATO. INTRODUCTION A locally finite group is a group in which every finite set of elements is contained in a finite subgroup. The study of locally finite groups began with Schur's result that a periodic linear group is, in fact, locally finite. The simple locally finite groups are of particular interest. In view of the classification of the finite simple groups and advances in representation theory, it is natural to pursue classification theorems for simple locally finite groups. This was one of the central themes of the Istanbul conference and significant progress is reported herein. The theory of simple locally finite groups intersects many areas of group theory and representation theory, so this served as a focus for several articles in the volume. Every simple locally finite group has what is known as a Kegel cover. This is a collection of pairs {(G , Ni) liE I}, where I is an index set, each group Gi is finite, i Ni

TitleAlgebraic K-Theory and Algebraic Topology
Author(s)Goerss, P.G;Jardine, John F
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1993.
DescriptionXII, 328 p : online resource
Abstract NoteA NATO Advanced Study Institute entitled "Algebraic K-theory and Algebraic Topology" was held at Chateau Lake Louise, Lake Louise, Alberta, Canada from December 12 to December 16 of 1991. This book is the volume of proceedings for this meeting. The papers that appear here are representative of most of the lectures that were given at the conference, and therefore present a "snapshot" of the state ofthe K-theoretic art at the end of 1991. The underlying objective of the meeting was to discuss recent work related to the Lichtenbaum-Quillen complex of conjectures, fro~ both the algebraic and topological points of view. The papers in this volume deal with a range of topics, including motivic cohomology theories, cyclic homology, intersection homology, higher class field theory, and the former telescope conjecture. This meeting was jointly funded by grants from NATO and the National Science Foun?? dation in the United States. I would like to take this opportunity to thank these agencies for their support. I would also like to thank the other members of the organizing com?? mittee, namely Paul Goerss, Bruno Kahn and Chuck Weibel, for their help in making the conference successful. This was the second NATO Advanced Study Institute to be held in this venue; the first was in 1987. The success of both conferences owes much to the professionalism and helpfulness of the administration and staff of Chateau Lake Louise

TitlePerspectives in Ring Theory
Author(s)Van Oystaeyen, Freddy;Bruyn, Lieven le
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1988.
DescriptionXVI, 382 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThis proceedings is composed of the papers resulting from the NATO work-shop "Perspectives in Ring Theory" and the work-shop "Geometry and Invariant The?? ory of Representations of Quivers" . Three reports on problem sessions have been induced in the part corresponding to the work-shop where they belonged. One more report on a problem session, the "lost" problem session, will be published elsewhere eventually. vii Acknowledgement The meeting became possible by the financial support of the Scientific Affairs Division of NATO. The people at this division have been very helpful in the orga?? nization of the meeting, in particular we commemorate Dr. Mario di Lullo, who died unexpectedly last year, but who has been very helpful with the organization of earlier meetings in Ring Theory. For additional financial support we thank the national foundation for scientific research (NFWO), the rector of the University of Antwerp, UIA, and the Belgian Ministry of Education. We also gladly acknowledge support from the Belgian Friends of the Hebrew University and the chairman Prof. P. Van Remoortere who honored Prof. S. Amitsur for his continuous contributions to the mathematical activities at the University of Antwerp. I thank the authors who contributed their paper(s) to this proceedings and the lecturers for their undisposable contributions towards the success of the work-shop. Finally I thank Danielle for allowing me to spoil another holiday period in favor of a congress
