TitleThe Mechanics and Thermodynamics of Continuous Media
Author(s)Silhavy, Miroslav
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1997.
DescriptionXIV, 504 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book presents the non-linear theories of continuum thermomechanics. Throughout, the author emphasizes issues that are foundational in nature and seeks results common to materials of arbitrary symmetry. The central part of the book deals with thermoelastic bodies with heat conduction and viscosity, including the inviscid or ideal dissipationless bodies. A surprising variety of phenomena can be modeled within this framework. Moreover, the main ideas can be transferred into more complicated theories of materials with memory or microstructure. A large portion is an extension of Gibbs' ideas to bodies of general symmetry by the methods of the calculus of variations. A progress there is recent. The interplay between the convexity properties of the stored energy functions, the resulting equations, and the physics of the phenomena are leading themes

Abstract NoteThis volume contains the written texts of the papers presented at a Symposium on Buckling of Structures held at Harvard University in June 1974. This symposium, one of several on various topics sponsored annually by the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Me?? chanics (IUTAM), was organized by a Scientific Committee consisting of B. Budiansky (Chairman), A. H. Chilver, W. T. Koiter, and A. S. Vol'?? mir. Participation was by invitation of the Scientific Committee, and specific lecturers were invited to speak in the areas of experimental research, buckling and post-buckling calculations, post-buckling mode interaction, plasticity and creep effects, dynamic buckling, stochastic problems, and design. A total of 29 lectures were delivered, including a general opening lecture by Professor Koiter, and there were 93 reg?? istered participants from 16 different countries. Financial support for the symposium was provided by IUTAM, in the form of partial travel support for a number of participants, and also by the National Science Foundation, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, and the Air Force Office of Scientific Re?? search, for additional travel support and administrative expenses. Meeting facilities and services were efficiently provided by the Science Center of Harvard University, and administrative support was gen?? erously provided by the Division of Engineering and Applied Physics of Harvard University. The scientific chairman enjoyed the invaluable assistance of his colleagues Professors J. W. Hutchinson and J. L

TitleThermomechanics of Continua
Author(s)Wilmanski, Krzysztof
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1998.
DescriptionXI, 276 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThis textbook is for engineering and physics students and contains, in a concise form, the foundations of both continuum mechanics and modern continuum thermodynamics. It originates from numerous courses delivered by the author at various universities. In contrast to other books on these subjects, it is self-contained and has examples and remarks scattered throughout the text to illustrate the chosen procedures or definitions. Also exercises help the reader to understand the applicability and the limitations of thermodynamical models. The book is an excellent introduction to rational extended thermodynamics

DescriptionVIII, 375 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe Colloquium on Creep in Structures was organized as part of the activities of the International Union on Theoretical and Applied Mecha?? nies. It was supported financiaHy by IUTAM, as weH as by the National Science Foundation, Washington, D. C., U. S. A. The Scientific Commit?? tee charged with the work of organization consisted of the foHowing persons: NICHOLAS J. HOFF, Stanford University, Stanford, California, Chair?? man FOLKE K. G. ODQVIST, Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, Sweden, Vice-Chairman R. MAZET, Office National d'Etudes et de Recherehes Aeronautiques, Chatillon-sous-Bagneux, France Y. N. RABOTNOV, Academy of Sciences, Novosibirsk, U. S. S. R. SHUJI TAIRA, Kyoto University, Kyoto, Japan. The details of the organization of the sessions were entrusted to the Local Committee consisting of the following persons: MAX ANLIKER W. H. HORToN K. BINFORD B. LEMPRIERE C.C.CHAO L. NICKEL W. G. FL??GGE In order to insure good discussion and, in general, a broad exchange of ideas among the participants in the meeting, the number of persons invited to attend was kept to a minimum. Participants not living in the Stanford area were housed in Donner House of Stern Hall on the Stanford campus, and were served meals in the dining room of Donner House. The speakers and observers started to arrive on July 9 and the last ones left on July 18

TitleChaos and Quantum Chaos : Proceedings of the Eighth Chris Engelbrecht Summer School on Theoretical Physics, Held at Blydepoort, Eastern Transvaal, South Africa, 13???24 January 1992
Author(s)Heiss, W.Dieter
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1992.
DescriptionXIV, 330 p. 43 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteUntil now the important concept of quantum chaos has remained somewhat ill defined. This volume tackles the ubiquitous borderline between classical andquantum mechanics, studying in particular the semiclassical limit of chaotic systems. The effects of disorder from dynamics and their relation to stochastic systems, quantum coherence effects in mesoscopic systems, and the relevant theoretical approaches are fruitfully combined in this volume. The major paradigms of what is called quantum chaos, random matrix theory and applications to condensed matter and nuclear physics are presented. Detailed discussions of experimental work with particular emphasis on atomic physics are included. The book is highly recommended for graduate-student seminars

TitleStress Waves in Anelastic Solids : Symposium Held at Brown University, Providence, R. I., April 3???5, 1963
Author(s)Kolsky, Herbert;Prager, William
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1964.
DescriptionXII, 342 p : online resource
Abstract NoteAlthough the subject of wave propagation in solids has a long history, the classical theory of elastic waves having been developed in the nine?? teenth century by STOKES, POISSON, RAYLEIGH and KELVIN, the last two decades have seen a remarkable revival of interest in this subject among both theoreticians and experimenters. There' are a number of reasons for this; first, experimental methods for the generation and detection of high frequency mechanical waves have become available only with the advent of electronic techniques and of high speed photo?? graphic recording apparatus. Secondly, the appearan

TitleImpulse Time-Domain Electromagnetics of Continuous Media
Author(s)Shvartsburg, Alex
PublicationBoston, MA, 1. Birkh??user Boston 2. Imprint: Birkh??user, 1999.
DescriptionXV, 168 p : online resource
Abstract Notetion of fields as a product of coordinate-dependent and time-dependent factors. The temporal variations of both media and fields are given by Fourier expansions. The successes of radiotechnique provided fertile ground for the dominance of sinusoidal waves in wave physics. This approach proved to be a powerful the?? oretical tool, since researchers were dealing with long trains of slowly varying quasi-monochromatic waves. However, the success of this concept and the stan?? dardizability of related designs engendered a peculiar psychological hypnosis of Fourier electromagnetics, which took over as a model for wave phenomena in such cross-discipIlnary areas of physics as optics and acoustics. Yet in providing a description of alternating fields, the presentation of such fields in terms of traveling waves with frequency wand wave number k is not a law of nature. One can see that such a presentation is not even a logical corollary of Maxwell's equations. What is more, this approach has become inadequate today for the analysis of fields excited by ultrashort transients in continuous media
