TitleSearch for the Pentaquark ??+ via the ?????p ??? K???X Reaction at J-PARC
Author(s)Moritsu, Manabu
PublicationSingapore, Springer Singapore, 2016.
DescriptionXIII, 123 p. 86 illus., 38 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis theses reports on an experimental search for an exotic hadron, ??+(1540) pentaquark, which is a genuine exotic hadron with a five-quark system of uuddsbar. The results of this book support that the existence of ??+ was strongly constrained. The ??+ pentaquark was searched for via the ??- p ??? K- X reaction using a beam momentum of 2.01 GeV/c at the J-PARC hadron experimental facility, taking advantage of high-statistics and high-resolution compared with previous experiments, some of which claimed the evidence of ??+. In order to realize a good missing-mass resolution of 2 MeV, the beam spectrometer and superconducting kaon spectrometer were constructed. No clear peak was observed in the missing mass spectrum of the ??- p ??? K- X reaction, and the upper limit of the production cross section was found to be less than 0.28 ??b/sr at the 90% confidence level in a mass region of 1500???1560 MeV/c2. This upper limit is an order of magnitude smaller than that of the previous KEK experiment. Compared with a theoretical calculation using the effective Lagrangian approach, the decay width of ??+ was evaluated. The upper limits on the decay width were estimated to be 0.36 and 1.9 MeV for the ??+ spin-parity of 1/2+ and 1/2-, respectively. These are quite small for a width of ordinary hadron resonances, and the existence of ??+ was strongly constrained and is doubtful

TitleProbing Cosmic Dark Matter and Dark Energy with Weak Gravitational Lensing Statistics
Author(s)Shirasaki, Masato
PublicationSingapore, Springer Singapore, 2016.
DescriptionXI, 136 p. 31 illus., 6 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteIn this book the applicability and the utility of two statistical approaches for understanding dark energy and dark matter with gravitational lensing measurement are introduced. For cosmological constraints on the nature of dark energy, morphological statistics called Minkowski functionals (MFs) to extract the non-Gaussian information of gravitational lensing are studied. Measuring lensing MFs from the Canada???France???Hawaii Telescope Lensing survey (CFHTLenS), the author clearly shows that MFs can be powerful statistics beyond the conventional approach with the two-point correlation function. Combined with the two-point correlation function, MFs can constrain the equation of state of dark energy with a precision level of approximately 3???4 % in upcoming surveys with sky coverage of 20,000 square degrees. On the topic of dark matter, the author studied the cross-correlation of gravitational lensing and the extragalactic gamma-ray background (EGB). Dark matter annihilation is among the potential contributors to the EGB. The cross-correlation is a powerful probe of signatures of dark matter annihilation, because both cosmic shear and gamma-ray emission originate directly from the same dark matter distribution in the universe. The first measurement of the cross-correlation using a real data set obtained from CFHTLenS and the Fermi Large Area Telescope was performed. Comparing the result with theoretical predictions, an independent constraint was placed on dark matter annihilation. Future lensing surveys will be useful to constrain on the canonical value of annihilation cross section for a wide range of mass of dark matter

TitleGeneral Theory of Light Propagation and Imaging Through the Atmosphere
Author(s)McKechnie, T. Stewart
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2016.
DescriptionXXIX, 624 p. 190 illus., 13 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book lays out a new, general theory of light propagation and imaging through Earth???s turbulent atmosphere. Current theory is based on the ??? now widely doubted ??? assumption of Kolmogorov turbulence. The new theory is based on a generalized atmosphere, the turbulence characteristics of which can be established, as needed, from readily measurable properties of point-object, or star, images. The pessimistic resolution predictions of Kolmogorov theory led to lax optical tolerance prescriptions for large ground-based astronomical telescopes which were widely adhered to in the 1970s and 1980s. Around 1990, however, it became clear that much better resolution was actually possible, and Kolmogorov tolerance prescriptions were promptly abandoned. Most large telescopes built before 1990 have had their optics upgraded (e.g., the UKIRT instrument) and now achieve, without adaptive optics (AO), almost an order of magnitude better resolution than before. As well as providing a more comprehensive and precise understanding of imaging through the atmosphere with large telescopes (both with and without AO), the new general theory also finds applications in the areas of laser communications and high-energy laser beam propagation

TitleStatistical Methods for Data Analysis in Particle Physics
Author(s)Lista, Luca
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2016.
DescriptionXIX, 172 p. 63 illus., 59 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis concise set of course-based notes provides the reader with the main concepts and tools to perform statistical analysis of experimental data, in particular in the field of high-energy physics (HEP). First, an introduction to probability theory and basic statistics is given, mainly as reminder from advanced undergraduate studies, yet also in view to clearly distinguish the Frequentist versus Bayesian approaches and interpretations in subsequent applications. More advanced concepts and applications are gradually introduced, culminating in the chapter on upper limits as many applications in HEP concern hypothesis testing, where often the main goal is to provide better and better limits so as to be able to distinguish eventually between competing hypotheses or to rule out some of them altogether. Many worked examples will help newcomers to the field and graduate students to understand the pitfalls in applying theoretical concepts to actual data

TitleHigh Precision Optical Spectroscopy and Quantum State Selected Photodissociation of Ultracold 88Sr2 Molecules in an Optical Lattice
Author(s)McDonald, Mickey
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2018.
DescriptionXVII, 183 p. 60 illus., 57 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis thesis unites the fields of optical atomic clocks and ultracold molecular science, laying the foundation for optical molecular measurements of unprecedented precision. Building upon optical manipulation techniques developed by the atomic clock community, this work delves into attaining surgical control of molecular quantum states. The thesis develops two experimental observables that one can measure with optical-lattice-trapped ultracold molecules: extremely narrow optical spectra, and angular distributions of photofragments that are ejected when the diatomic molecules are dissociated by laser light pulses. The former allows molecular spectroscopy approaching the level of atomic clocks, leading into molecular metrology and tests of fundamental physics. The latter opens the field of ultracold chemistry through observation of quantum effects such as matter-wave interference of photofragments and tunneling through reaction barriers. The thesis also describes a discovery of a new method of thermometry that can be used near absolute zero temperatures for particles lacking cycling transitions, solving a long-standing experimental problem in atomic and molecular physics
