TitleMolecular Orientation and Emission Characteristics of Ir Complexes and Exciplex in Organic Thin Films
Author(s)Moon, Chang-Ki
PublicationSingapore, Springer Singapore, 2019.
DescriptionXXIX, 76 p. 37 illus., 32 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis thesis considers molecular orientation in thin films and introduces an optical model describing this orientation as applied to organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). It also describes the electronic structure of intermolecular charge transfer excitons correlated to molecular orientation in solids. It has long been known that molecular orientation influences the electrical and optical properties of molecular films. One notable example is in liquid crystals where rigid rod or disk shaped molecules are commonly used. Understanding the origin of the molecular orientation and its control by surface treatment and electric field resulted in the development of liquid crystal displays. The same thing has happened in organic electronics, and considerable effort has been devoted to understanding and controlling molecular orientation in solid films to improve charge carrier mobility and light absorption, ultimately to improve the performance of organic solar cells and thin film transistors. In contrast, less attention has been paid to molecular orientation and its influence on the characteristics of OLEDs, probably because of the use of amorphous films rather than micro-crystalline films, and it is only in recent years that some molecular films are known to have preferred orientation. This thesis addresses this topic, focusing on OLEDs, describing the origin and control of the orientation of phosphorescent Ir complexes possessing spherical shape rather than rod or disk shape, the simulation of the optical characteristics of OLEDs influenced by preferred molecular orientation, and finally the orientation of intermolecular charge transfer excitons and its correlation to electronic structures in thin films

DescriptionXXI, 441 p. 449 illus., 71 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book reviews various topics in optoelectronics and the design of microelectronic circuits. It introduces readers to the essential features of optical absorption and device physics of photodetectors, as well as their integration in modern CMOS and BiCMOS technologies. This information provides the basis for understanding the underlying mechanisms of Optoelectronic Integrated Circuits (OEICs), which are described in the main part of the book. In the second edition of this book, new and outstanding integrated high-bandwidth pin photodiodes as well as avalanche photodiodes in the linear mode and in the Geiger mode are introduced. To cover the topic comprehensively, the book presents detailed descriptions of OEICs for a wide range of applications: from various optical sensors, smart sensors, image sensors, 3D-sensors and optical storage systems, to fiber receivers and receivers for optical wireless communication, as well as single-photon detection. This new edition also reflects the latest trends in OEIC research on integrated optical receivers at the quantum limit and electronic-photonic integration, and highlights outstanding 3D-integrated application examples like a multi-node optical switch, an optical transceiver, and a high-resolution 3D sensor.

TitleShortcut to Superconductivity : Superconducting Electronics via COMSOL Modeling
Author(s)Gulian, Armen
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2020.
DescriptionXVII, 276 p. 178 illus., 75 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis accessible textbook offers a novel, concept-led approach to superconducting electronics, using the COMSOL Multiphysics software to help describe fundamental principles in an intuitive manner. Based on a course taught by the author and aimed primarily at engineering students, the book explains concepts effectively and efficiently, uncovering the ???shortcut??? to understanding each topic, enabling readers to quickly grasp the underlying essence. The book is divided into two main parts; the first part provides a general introduction to key topics encountered in superconductivity, illustrated using COMSOL simulations based on time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equations and avoiding any deeply mathematical derivations. It includes numerous worked examples and problem sets with tips and solutions. The second part of the book is more conventional in nature, providing detailed derivations of the basic equations from first principles. This part covers more advanced topics, including the BCS-Gor'kov-Eliashberg approach to equilibrium properties of superconductors, the derivation of kinetic equations for nonequilibrium superconductors, and the derivation of time-dependent Ginzburg???Landau equations, used as the basis for COMSOL modeling in the first part. Supported throughout by an extensive library of COMSOL Multiphysics animations, the book serves as a uniquely accessible introduction to the field for engineers and others with a less rigorous background in physics and mathematics. However, it also features more detailed mathematical background for those wishing to delve further into the subject.

TitleIntegrated Optics : Theory and Technology
Author(s)Hunsperger, Robert G
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2002.
DescriptionXXII, 446 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book explains the subject of optoelectronic devices and their use in integrated optics and fiber optic systems. The approach taken is to emphasize the physics of how devices work and how they can be (and have been) used in various applications. Mathematical derivations and the development of design equations are provided where necessary to explain phenomena and engineering principles, but a strong effort has been made to not obscure important concepts with mathematical details. Illustrations and references from technical journals have been used to demonstrate the relevance of the theory to currently important topics in industry. By reading this book, scientists, engineers, students and enginering managers can obtain an overall view of the theory and the most recent technology in Integrated Optics. In this fifth edition all chapters have been revised and updated. The chapters on Polymer and Fiber Integrated Optics, Optical Amplifiers, Micro-Optical-Electro-Mechanical Devices, and Photonic and Microwave Wireless Systems are completely new. Problems help the students to deepen their knowledge
