Title | Information Dynamics : In Classical and Quantum Systems |
Author(s) | Dittrich, Thomas |
Publication | Cham, 1. Imprint: Springer
2. Springer International Publishing, 2022. |
Description | XV, 557 p. 195 illus., 124 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This wide-ranging book introduces information as a key concept not only in physics, from quantum mechanics to thermodynamics, but also in the neighboring sciences and in the humanities. The central part analyzes dynamical processes as manifestations of information flows between microscopic and macroscopic scales and between systems and their environment. Quantum mechanics is interpreted as a reconstruction of mechanics based on fundamental limitations of information processing on the smallest scales. These become particularly manifest in quantum chaos and in quantum computing. Covering subjects such as causality, prediction, undecidability, chaos, and quantum randomness, the book also provides an information-theoretical view of predictability. More than 180 illustrations visualize the concepts and arguments. The book takes inspiration from the author's graduate-level topical lecture but is also well suited for undergraduate studies and is a valuable resource for researchers and professionals |

Title | Karl Popper's Science and Philosophy |
Author(s) | Parusnikov??, Zuzana;Merritt, David |
Publication | Cham, Springer International Publishing, 2021. |
Description | X, 367 p. 18 illus., 10 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | Of all philosophers of the 20th century, few built more bridges between academic disciplines than Karl Popper. He contributed to a wide variety of fields in addition to the epistemology and the theory of scientific method for which he is best known. This book illustrates and evaluates the impact, both substantive and methodological, that Popper has had in the natural and mathematical sciences. The topics selected include quantum mechanics, evolutionary biology, cosmology, mathematical logic, statistics, and cognitive science. The approach is multidisciplinary, opening a dialogue across scientific disciplines and between scientists and philosophers |

Title | The Quantum Labyrinth |
Author(s) | Hoekzema, D.J |
Publication | Dordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1993. |
Description | XVI, 281 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | At the outset of the research leading to this book I held a position somewhere close to 'the standard Copenhagen interpretation' of QM. I was strongly attracted to, in particular, the philosophy of Niels Bohr. However, being aware of some of the problematic sides and ambiguities of his views and of new developments which have taken place in QM after his time, the main challenge would be to develop a more up to date version version of his approach and express it in a philosophically unobjectionable way. Traces of this original attitude can still be found in views I hold nowadays. For instance, I think that I now know a satisfactory and correct way of dealing with features like 'complementarity', and I still see this as a relevant subject. In many other respects, however, there have been major changes in my position. In fact, during certain stages of my research my views simply started moving and kept on doing so at an irritating pace and for uncomfortably long periods of time. I learned, for example that at least some of the classical ideas about theory structure are much better than I had realized, and cannot just be pushed aside for anything even as impressive as empirical success |

Title | Theorems and counterexample in mathematics |
Author(s) | Bernard R. Gelbaum;John M.H. Olmsted |
Publication | New Delhi, Springer (India) Pvt. Ltd., 1990. |
Description | xxxiv, 305p. |
Series | (Problem books in mathematics) |
Abstract Note | Book provides graduate and advanced undergraduate students as well as the general mathematical public with a modern treatment of various theorems and examples in mathematics. A carefully arranged mixture of theorems, examples, exercises, hints and discussions sharpens and highlights many of the fundamental aspects of the subject matter, and constitutes a rounding out and elaboration of the standard parts of algebra, analysis, geometry, logic, probability, set theory, and topology. Essentially self-contained, the book presents this material with a treatment sensitive to the progress mathematics has made in the last 25 years. |
