TitleComputational Fluid Dynamics : An Introduction
Author(s)Wendt, John F
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1992.
DescriptionXII, 291 p. 27 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book is an outgrowth of a von Kannan Institute Lecture Series by the same title first presented in 1985 and repeated with modifications in succeeding years. The objective, then and now, was to present the subject of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to an audience unfamiliar with all but the most basic aspects of numerical techniques and to do so in such a way that the practical application ofCFD would become clear to everyone. Remarks from hundreds of persons who followed this course encouraged the editor and the authors to improve the content and organization year by year and eventually to produce the present volume. The book is divided into two parts. In the first part, John Anderson lays out the subject by first describing the governing equations offluid dynamics, concentration on their mathematical properties which contain the keys to the choice of the numerical approach. Methods of discretizing the equations are discussed next and then transformation techniques and grids are also discussed. This section closes with two examples of numerical methods which can be understood easily by all concerned: source and vortex panel methods and the explicit method. The second part of the book is devoted to four self-contained chapters on more advanced material: Roger Grundmann treats the boundary layer equations and methods of solution; Gerard Degrez treats implicit time-marching methods for inviscid and viscous compressible flows, and Eric Dick treats, in two separate articles, both finite-volume and finite-element methods

TitleSurface Science : Principles and Applications
Author(s)Howe, Russel F;Lamb, Robert N;Wandelt, Klaus
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1993.
DescriptionXII, 301 p : online resource
Abstract NoteSurface science has existed as a recognized discipline for more than 20 years. During this period, the subject has expanded in two important ways. On the one hand, the techniques available for studying surfaces, both experimental and theoretical, have grown in number and in sophistication. On the other hand, surface science has been applied to an increasing number of areas of technology, such as catalysis, semicon?? ductor processing, new materials development, corrosion prevention, adhesion and tribology. . There is, however, no sharp division between fundamental and applied surface science. New techniques can immediately be applied to technologically important problems. Improvements in understanding of fundamental phenomena such as epi?? taxial growth of one metal on another, or the bonding of hydrocarbons to metal sur?? faces, to name just two examples, have direct consequences for technology. Surface science has also become very much an interdisciplinary subject; physics, chemistry, materials science, chemical and electronical engineering all draw upon and contribute to surface science. The intimate relationship between principles and applications of surface science forms the theme of this proceedings volume. The contributions were all presented as invited lectures at an Australian-German Workshop on Surface Science held at Coogee Beach, Sydney, Australia, in December 1991. The contributors, all active surface scientists in their respective countries, were asked to highlight recent develop?? ments in their own areas of activity involving new techniques, advances in funda?? mental understanding or new applications in technology

TitleMechanical Problems in Measuring Force and Mass
Author(s)Wieringa, H
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1986.
DescriptionXIV, 333 p. 207 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteNowadays electrical force transducers, in which various electrical conversion principles are applied, are widely used. Transducers for forces from 1N till 10 MN are commercially available and used for industrial as well as research purposes. They not only serve to measure forces but also for weighing purposes. Directly converting a force into an electrical signal is not possible. This must be done step by step. For instance, in a strain gauge based transducer the conversion chain is: force - stress - strain - resistance change - bridge output. At every conversion point in this chain parasatic influences can interfere with the results and may cause a loss in accuracy. To surmount the problems related to obtaining sufficient accuracy and reliability for these transducers, much research has been done allover the world in the past 35 years. As a result, new materials, new techniques, improved constructional designs and compensation circuits have been found to overcome the parasitic influences. The object of the IMEKO Conferences on behalf of the Technical Committee on Measurement of Force and Mass (TC-3) is to exchange experiences, to discuss problems and to obtain knowledge about practical applications. In this book the papers have been collected that will be discussed at the 11th International Conference on Measurement of Force and Mass. The topic of this conference is "Mechanical Problems in Measuring Force and Mass"

TitleHeat Transfer in Radiating and Combusting Systems : Proceedings of EUROTHERM Seminar No. 17, 8???10 October 1990, Cascais, Portugal
Author(s)Carvalho, Maria G;Lockwood, Fred C;Taine, Jean
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1991.
DescriptionX, 619 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThis volume contains the selected papers presented at the EUROTHERM SEMINAR No. 17 - Heat Transfer in Radiating and Combusting Systems held at Cascais from October 8th- 10th, 1990. The EUROTHERM COMMITTEE was created by representatives of the member countries of the European Communities for the organization and coordination of European Scientific events in the field of thermal sciences and their applications. The book is focused on the integration of the heat transfer and combustion. These two subjects have traditionally been considered separate disciplines. In reality, the two are closely interwoven. The central purpose of the book is to generate an effective cross fertilisation of the two at both the fundamental and applied levels. The book reports on: mathematical simulations of heat transfer in reacting systems, new measurements of and measurement techniques for the radiation properties of the intervening medium, and data and theoretical analyses which clarify the physical nature of the complex interactions between the radiation/convection heat transfer processes and the combustion and turbulence of real reacting flows

TitleTribology Issues and Opportunities in MEMS : Proceedings of the NSF/AFOSR/ASME Workshop on Tribology Issues and Opportunities in MEMS held in Columbus, Ohio, U.S.A., 9???11 November 1997
Author(s)Bhushan, Bharat
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1998.
DescriptionXIV, 655 p : online resource
Abstract NoteMicro Electro Mechanical Systems (MEMS) is already about a billion dollars a year industry and is growing rapidly. So far major emphasis has been placed on the fabrication processes for various devices. There are serious issues related to tribology, mechanics, surfacechemistry and materials science in the operationand manufacturingof many MEMS devices and these issues are preventing an even faster commercialization. Very little is understood about tribology and mechanical properties on micro- to nanoscales of the materials used in the construction of MEMS devices. The MEMS community needs to be exposed to the state-of-the-artoftribology and vice versa. Fundamental understanding of friction/stiction, wear and the role of surface contamination and environmental debris in micro devices is required. There are significantadhesion, friction and wear issues in manufacturing and actual use, facing the MEMS industry. Very little is understood about the tribology of bulk silicon and polysilicon films used in the construction ofthese microdevices. These issues are based on surface phenomenaand cannotbe scaled down linearly and these become increasingly important with the small size of the devices. Continuum theory breaks down in the analyses, e. g. in fluid flow of micro-scale devices. Mechanical properties ofpolysilicon and other films are not well characterized. Roughness optimization can help in tribological improvements. Monolayers of lubricants and other materials need to be developed for ultra-low friction and near zero wear. Hard coatings and ion implantation techniques hold promise

TitleUnsteady Aerodynamics, Aeroacoustics, and Aeroelasticity of Turbomachines and Propellers
Author(s)Atassi, H.M
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer New York, 1993.
DescriptionX, 889 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe first International Symposium on Unsteady Aerodynamics and Aero?? elasticity of Turbomachines was held in Paris in 1976, and was followed by symposia at Lausanne in 1980, Cambridge in 1984, Aachen in 1987, Bei?? jing in 1989, and Notre Dame in 1991. The proceedings published following these symposia have become recognized both as basic reference texts in the subject area and as useful guides to progress in the field. It is hoped that this volume, which represents the proceedings of the Sixth International Symposium on Unsteady Aerodynamics of Turbomachines, will continue that tradition. Interest in the unsteady aerodynamics, aeroacoustics, and aeroelasticity of turbomachines has been growing rapidly since the Paris symposium. This expanded interest is reflected by a significant increase in the numbers of contributed papers and symposium participants. The timeliness of the topics has always been an essential objective of these symposia. Another important objective is to promote an international exchange between scien?? tists and engineers from universities, government agencies, and industry on the fascinating phenomena of unsteady turbomachine flows and how they affect the aeroelastic stability of the blading system and cause the radiation of unwanted noise. This exchange acts as a catalyst for the development of new analytical and numerical models along with carefully designed ex?? periments to help understand the behavior of such systems and to develop predictive tools for engineering applications
