Title | Research Methodology : The Aims, Practices and Ethics of Science |
Author(s) | Pruzan, Peter |
Publication | Cham, Springer International Publishing, 2016. |
Description | XII, 326 p. 4 illus., 1 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book is an in-depth guide to effective scientific research. Ranging from the philosophical to the practical, it explains at the outset what science can ??? and can???t ??? achieve, and discusses its relationship to mathematics and laws. The author then pays extensive attention to the scientific method, including experimental design, verification, uncertainty and statistics. A major aim of the book is to help young scientists reflect upon the deeper aims of their work and make the best use of their talents in contributing to progress. To this end, it also includes sections on planning research, on presenting one???s findings in writing, as well as on ethics and the responsibilities of scientists. |

Title | Telemedicine : Medicine and Communication |
Author(s) | Buzug, Thorsten M;Handels, Heinz;Holz, Dietrich |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer US, 2001. |
Description | XIV, 213 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | Within the various aspects of life-science technologies medicine and information technology will change next millennium's quality-of-life fundamentally. Thanks to the rapid growth of telecommunication industry and the success and popularity of the internet the face of medicine will essentially change, because information technology is expected to play a major role in future health care systems. The conference MEDICOM 2000 is a discussion forum on fast and cost efficient patient-data exchange systems between doctors' offices, medical laboratories, telearchive services, health care insurances, highly specialized experts in hospitals etc. The conference brought together scientific, medical and application experts from university, clinical and commercial sites of both areas - medicine and communication - to stimulate synergy between these rapidly evolving future technologies. We would like to acknowledge all the parties who contributed to the success of the conference. Especially, we would like to thank Gisela Niedzwetzki and Waltraud Ott for secretarial support as well as Dirk Thomsen for web mastering. Additionally, we have to acknowledge the valuable support of Holger Dorle, Thomas Giese, Peter Just, Stefan Klockner, Heike Lahr and Kerstin Ltidtke-Buzug during the conference |

Title | Complex Dynamics in Physiological Systems: From Heart to Brain |
Author(s) | Dana, Syamal K;Roy, Prodyot K;Kurths, J??rgen |
Publication | Dordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 2009. |
Description | XVI, 272 p. 136 illus., 54 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | Nonlinear dynamics has become an important field of research in recent years in many areas of the natural sciences. In particular, it has potential applications in biology and medicine; nonlinear data analysis has helped to detect the progress of cardiac disease, physiological disorders, for example episodes of epilepsy, and others. This book focuses on the current trends of research concerning the prediction of sudden cardiac death and the onset of epileptic seizures, using the nonlinear analysis based on ECG and EEG data. Topics covered include the analysis of cardiac models and neural models. The book is a collection of recent research papers by leading physicists, mathematicians, cardiologists and neurobiologists who are actively involved in using the concepts of nonlinear dynamics to explore the functional behaviours of heart and brain under normal and pathological conditions. This collection is intended for students in physics, mathematics and medical sciences, and researchers in interdisciplinary areas of physics and biology |

Title | Dynamical Systems : An Introduction with Applications in Economics and Biology |
Author(s) | Tu, Pierre N.V |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1994. |
Description | XVIII, 314 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | The favourable reception of the first edition and the encouragement received from many readers have prompted the author to bring out this new edition. This provides the opportunity for correcting a number of errors, typographical and others, contained in the first edition and making further improvements. This second edition has a new chapter on simplifying Dynamical Systems covering Poincare map, Floquet theory, Centre Manifold Theorems, normal forms of dynamical systems, elimination of passive coordinates and Liapunov-Schmidt reduction theory. It would provide a gradual transition to the study of Bifurcation, Chaos and Catastrophe in Chapter 10. Apart from this, most others - in fact all except the first three and last chapters - have been revised and enlarged to bring in some new materials, elaborate some others, especially those sections which many readers felt were rather too concise in the first edition, by providing more explana?? tion, examples and applications. Chapter 11 provides some good examples of this. Another example may be found in Chapter 4 where the review of Linear Algebra has been enlarged to incorporate further materials needed in this edition, for example the last section on idempotent matrices and projection would prove very useful to follow Liapunov-Schmidt reduction theory presented in Chapter 9 |

Title | Foundations of Synergetics II : Complex Patterns |
Author(s) | Mikhailov, Alexander S;Loskutov, Alexander Yu |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1991. |
Description | VIII, 210 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | This textbook is based on a lecture course in synergetics given at the University of Moscow. In this second of two volumes, we discuss the emergence and properties of complex chaotic patterns in distributed active systems. Such patterns can be produced autonomously by a system, or can result from selective amplification of fluctuations caused by external weak noise. Although the material in this book is often described by refined mathematical theories, we have tried to avoid a formal mathematical style. Instead of rigorous proofs, the reader will usually be offered only "demonstrations" (the term used by Prof. V. I. Arnold) to encourage intuitive understanding of a problem and to explain why a particular statement seems plausible. We also refrained from detailing concrete applications in physics or in other scientific fields, so that the book can be used by students of different disciplines. While preparing the lecture course and producing this book, we had intensive discussions with and asked the advice of Prof. V. I. Arnold, Prof. S. Grossmann, Prof. H. Haken, Prof. Yu. L. Klimontovich, Prof. R. L. Stratonovich and Prof. Ya |

Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1993. |
Description | VIII, 237 p. 72 illus : online resource |
Abstract Note | Nonlinear dynamics is now recognized as playing a crucial role in a wide variety of disciplines. But what is only just beginning is the important process of cross fertilization and transfer of knowledge and expertise from one area to another. This book is intended to promote this process which will undoubtedly contribute greatly to furthering our understanding of complex systems. Contributions are provided by leading experts from the areas of sociology, cognitive science, chemistry, physiology, ecology, economics, neural networks and physics |

Description | XIII, 578 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | The NATO Advanced Study Institute on Biomechanics of Active Movement and Division of Cells was held September 19-29, 1993 in Istanbul and the Proceedings are presented in this volume. Sixty-eight scientists from sixteen countries attended. Prof. J. Bereiter-Hahn of Goethe-Universitat, Frankfurt, Germany, Prof. A.K. Harris of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, USA, Prof. R.M. Nerem of Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, USA and Prof. R. As the Scientific Director of the Institute, I wish to express my sincere appreciation for their assistance without which the Institute could not have taken place. This Institute is the third one of the meetings which are now called "the NATO Istanbul Meetings on Cytomechanics". The first one was the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on Biomechanics of Cell Division which was held October 12-17, 1986 in Istanbul. The Proceedings were published as NATO ASI Series A Life Sciences Vol. 132 by Plenum Press in 1987. The second one was the NATO Advanced Study Institute on Biomechanics of Active Movement and Deformation of Cells which was held September 3-13, 1989 in Istanbul.
