TitleApplications of Synchrotron Radiation : Micro Beams in Cell Micro Biology and Medicine
Author(s)Ide-Ektessabi, Ari
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2007.
DescriptionXIV, 218 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book demonstrates the applications of synchrotron radiation in certain aspects of cell microbiology, specifically non-destructive elemental analyses, chemical-state analyses and imaging (distribution) of the elements within a cell. The basics for understanding and applications of synchrotron radiation are also described to make the contents easier to be understood for a wide group of researchers in medical and biological sciences who might not be familiar with the physics of synchrotron radiation. The two main techniques that are discussed in this book are the x-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF) and the x-ray fine structure analysis (XAFS). Application of these techniques in investigations of several important scientific fields, such as neurodegeneration and other diseases related to cell malfunctioning, are demonstrated in this book

TitleApplications of Synchrotron Light to Scattering and Diffraction in Materials and Life Sciences
Author(s)Ezquerra, T.A;Garcia-Gutierrez, Mari Cruz;Nogales, Aurora;Gomez, Marian
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2009.
DescriptionXVI, 318 p. 177 illus., 20 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThe present set of lecture notes originates from the deeply felt need in the community to bridge the gap between beamline manuals and advanced graduate textbooks. The volume is a collection of tutorials, surveys and reviews. They cover most cases of relevance and interest where the combination of synchrotron light with various scattering and diffraction techniques is a very helpful approach to obtaining essential information about the structure of large molecular assemblies in low-ordered environments. Soft condensed matter and biomaterials, as well as complex fluids, are typical of the materials considered here. Contributions to this volume have been selected on the basis of their close relevance to advanced synchrotron radiation sources and state-of-the art beamline work

TitleFundamentals of Fluorescence Microscopy : Exploring Life with Light
Author(s)Mondal, Partha Pratim;Diaspro, Alberto
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 2014.
DescriptionXV, 218 p. 140 illus., 55 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book starts at an introductory level and leads reader to the most advanced developments in fluorescence imaging and super-resolution techniques that have enabled the emergence of new disciplines such as nanobioimaging, multiphoton microscopy, photodynamic therapy, nanometrology and nanosensors. The interdisciplinary subject of fluorescence microscopy and imaging requires complete knowledge of imaging optics and molecular physics. So, this book approaches the subject by introducing optical imaging concepts before going deep into the advanced imaging systems and their applications. Molecular orbital theory forms the basis for understanding fluorescent molecules and thereby facilitates complete explanation of light-matter interaction at the geometrical focus. The two disciplines have some overlap since light controls the states of molecules and conversely, molecular states control the emitted light. These two mechanisms together determine essential fluorescence factors and phenomena such as, molecular cross-section, Stokes shift, emission and absorption spectra, quantum yield, signal-to-noise ratio, Forster resonance energy transfer (FRET), fluorescence recovery after photobleaching (FRAP) and fluorescence lifetime. These phenomena form the basis of many fluorescence based devices. The book is organized into two parts. The first part deals with basics of imaging optics and its applications. The advanced part covers many imaging techniques and related instrumentation that are developed in the last decade pointing towards far-field diffraction limited and unlimited imaging

TitleHigh-Resolution Extreme Ultraviolet Microscopy : Imaging of Artificial and Biological Specimens with Laser-Driven Ultrafast XUV Sources
Author(s)Z??rch, Michael Werner
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2015.
DescriptionXVIII, 127 p. 44 illus., 30 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book provides a comprehensive overview of the technique of frequency conversion of ultrafast lasers towards the extreme ultraviolet (XUV) regime, starting with the frequency conversion scheme and its technical implementation as well as general considerations of diffraction-based imaging at nanoscopic spatial resolutions. The last few centuries have seen continual advances in optical microscopy, driven by the demand to image ever-smaller objects. In recent years, frequency conversion of ultrafast lasers towards the extreme ultraviolet (XUV) regime has significantly enhanced the achievable resolution thanks to shorter wavelengths. The absence of high-magnification optics in the XUV regime is a major issue associated with this technique and is tackled with direct measurement and reconstruction of coherent diffraction patterns. The experimental application of this technique in terms of digital in-line holography and coherent-diffraction imaging is demonstrated on artificial and biological specimens. The book introduces a novel, award-winning cancer-cell classification scheme based on biological imaging. Finally, it presents a newly developed technique for generating structured illumination in the XUV regime and demonstrates its usability for super-resolution imaging

TitleDigital Holographic Microscopy : Principles, Techniques, and Applications
Author(s)Kim, Myung K
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer New York, 2011.
DescriptionXVI, 240 p : online resource
Abstract NoteDigital holography is an emerging field of new paradigm in general imaging applications. By replacing the photochemical procedures with electronic imaging and having a direct numerical access to the complex optical field, a wide range of new imaging capabilities become available, many of them difficult or infeasible in conventional holography. An increasing number of researchers???not only in optical physics and optical engineering, but also in diverse applications areas such as microbiology, medicine, marine science, particle analysis, microelectromechanics, and metrology???are realizing and exploiting the new capabilities of digital holography. Digital Holographic Microscopy: Principles, Techniques, and Applications, by Dr. Myung K. Kim, is intended to provide a brief but consistent introduction to the principles of digital holography as well as to give an organized overview of the large number of techniques and applications being developed. This will also shed some light on the range of possibilities for further developments. As such, the intended readers are the students and new researchers interested in developing new techniques and exploring new applications of digital holography. Numerous simulation examples and carefully designed diagrams help one to see the essential elements of the variety of techniques and applications. Reference lists are??given at the end of each chapter to make the search for relevant materials somewhat easier

TitleArctic Systems
Author(s)Amaria, P
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer US, 1977.
DescriptionXIII, 956 p. 143 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteFor the purpose of publication of these Proceedings, the original conference programme has been rearranged to provide a more logical sequence of presentation. The beginning sections give the inaugural speech and the six keynote addresses which were delivered at the opening plenary session. Following these are the working papers, published more or less in the same sequence in which they were presented in the original programme. The order of presentation does not necessarily emphasise the importance of any one aspect of the Arctic Systems over others. The final reports of the six working groups and their conclusions and recommendations are edited in such a manner as to present them in a standardised format for easy comprehension. The editors accept responsibility for any distortion inadvertently introduced in the summarising and editing processes. Later sections of the Proceedings give a background to the Conference organization and deliberations, and an independent critique of the meeting. The directors and those who attended the Conference were conscious of the debt of gratitude owed by them to the Conference chairmen, rapporteurs, authors of working papers, and many individuals for their contributions to the success of the meeting. We wish to thank them and it is a pleasure to record their names in these Proceedings. Inaugural Speaker Dr. J. Rennie Whitehead, Canada Banquet Guest Speaker Honourable Mr. T. Alex Hickman, Canada Keynote Addresses Mr. C. Bornemann, Denmark Dr. A.E. Collin, Canada Dr. R.E. Francois, U.S.A
