TitleAdvanced Quantum Mechanics : Materials and Photons
Author(s)Dick, Rainer
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2020.
DescriptionXXI, 811 p. 64 illus., 42 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis textbook, now in an expanded third edition, emphasizes the importance of advanced quantum mechanics for materials science and all experimental techniques which employ photon absorption, emission, or scattering. Important aspects of introductory quantum mechanics are covered in the first seven chapters to make the subject self-contained and accessible for a wide audience. Advanced Quantum Mechanics: Materials and Photons can therefore be used for advanced undergraduate courses and introductory graduate courses which are targeted towards students with diverse academic backgrounds from the Natural Sciences or Engineering. To enhance this inclusive aspect of making the subject as accessible as possible, introductions to Lagrangian mechanics and the covariant formulation of electrodynamics are provided in appendices. This third edition includes 60 new exercises, new and improved illustrations, and new material on interpretations of quantum mechanics. Other special features include an introduction to Lagrangian field theory and an integrated discussion of transition amplitudes with discrete or continuous initial or final states. Once students have acquired an understanding of basic quantum mechanics and classical field theory, canonical field quantization is easy. Furthermore, the integrated discussion of transition amplitudes naturally leads to the notions of transition probabilities, decay rates, absorption cross sections and scattering cross sections, which are important for all experimental techniques that use photon probes

TitleDevelopment of 15 Micron Cutoff Wavelength HgCdTe Detector Arrays for Astronomy
Author(s)Cabrera, Mario
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2020.
DescriptionXVII, 121 p. 71 illus., 44 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis thesis describes advances in the understanding of HgCdTe detectors. While long wave (15 ??m) infrared detectors HgCdTe detectors have been developed for military use under high background irradiance, these arrays had not previously been developed for astronomical use where the background irradiance is a billion times smaller. The main pitfall in developing such arrays for astronomy is the pixel dark current which plagues long wave HgCdTe. The author details work on the success of shorter wavelength development at Teledyne Imaging Sensors, carefully modeling the dark current???reverse bias voltage curves of their 10 ??m devices at a temperature of 30K, as well as the dark current???temperature curves at several reverse biases, including 250 mV. By projecting first to 13 and then 15 ??m HgCdTe growth, values of fundamental properties of the material that would minimize tunneling dark currents were determined through careful modeling of the dark current-reverse bias voltage curves, as well as the dark current-temperature curves. This analysis was borne out in the 13 ??m parts produced by Teledyne, and then further honed to produce the necessary parameters for the 15 ??m growth. The resulting 13 ??m arrays are being considered by a number of ground-based astronomy research groups

TitleLinear Elasticity of Elastic Circular Inclusions Part 2/Lineare Elastizit??tstheorie bei kreisrunden elastischen Einschl??ssen Teil 2
Author(s)Ranz, Thomas
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2020.
DescriptionXVII, 100 p. 43 illus., 7 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteIn this book the real analytic solutions for the ???Disc with Circular Inclusion??? under normal- and shear force at plane-strain state (EVZ) are presented. The associated solution process, which was developed according to the principle of statically indeterminate systems, is documented extensively. The solutions are given in terms of mechanical quantities (deformations, strains and stresses). Due to the superposition of the solutions for normal force in x- and y-direction and shear force the plane strain-stress relation can be formulated. The validation of the real analytic solutions is carried out by numeric FEM solution results. Comparing the results of the finite and infinite disc there is, however, a very high correspondence of all mechanical quantities. Therefore it can be assumed the real analytical solutions are the exact solutions

TitleOptical Whispering Gallery Modes for Biosensing : From Physical Principles to Applications
Author(s)Vollmer, Frank;Yu, Deshui
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2020.
DescriptionXIII, 416 p. 139 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteThis interdisciplinary book covers the fundamentals of optical whispering gallery mode (WGM) microcavities, light???matter interaction, and biomolecular structure with a focus on applications in biosensing. Novel biosensors based on the hybridization of WGM microcavities and localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPRs) in metal nanoparticles have emerged as the most sensitive microsystem biodetection technology that boasts single molecule detection capability without the need for amplification and labeling of the analyte. The book provides an ample survey of the physical mechanisms of WGMs and LSPRs for detecting affinity, concentration, size, shape and orientation of biomarkers, while informing the reader about different classes of biomolecules, their optical properties and their importance in label-free clinical diagnostics. For the more advanced reader, advanced applications of WGMs and LSPRs in exploring the fundamental nature of quantum physics are discussed.

TitleTransport and Turbulence in Quasi-Uniform and Versatile Bose-Einstein Condensates
Author(s)Guillaume, Gauthier
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2020.
DescriptionXX, 177 p. 70 illus., 68 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteAdvancing the experimental study of superfluids relies on increasingly sophisticated techniques. This work develops and demonstrates the loading of Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) into nearly arbitrary trapping potentials, with a resolution improved by a factor of seven when compared to reported systems. These advanced control techniques have now been adopted by several cold atoms labs around the world. The book describes how this BEC system was used to study 2D superfluid dynamic. In particular, negative temperature vortex states in a two-dimensional quantum fluid were observed. These states were first predicted by Lars Onsager 70 years ago and have significance to 2D turbulence in quantum and classical fluids, long-range interacting systems, and defect dynamics in high-energy physics. These experiments have established dilute-gas BECs as the prototypical system for the experimental study of point vortices and their nonequilibrium dynamics. Also presented is a new approach to superfluid circuitry based on classical acoustic circuits, whose conceptual and quantitative superiority over previous lumped-element models is demonstrated. This approach has established foundational principles of superfluid circuitry that will impact the design of future transport experiments and new generation quantum devices, such as atomtronics circuits and superfluid sensors

TitleProbing Two-Dimensional Quantum Fluids with Cavity Optomechanics
Author(s)Sachkou, Yauhen
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2020.
DescriptionXXI, 147 p. 55 illus., 40 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteSuperfluid helium is a quantum liquid that exhibits a range of counter-intuitive phenomena such as frictionless flow. Quantized vortices are a particularly important feature of superfluid helium, and all superfluids, characterized by a circulation that can only take prescribed integer values. However, the strong interactions between atoms in superfluid helium prohibit quantitative theory of vortex behaviour. Experiments have similarly not been able to observe coherent vortex dynamics. This thesis resolves this challenge, bringing microphotonic techniques to bear on two-dimensional superfluid helium, observing coherent vortex dynamics for the first time, and achieving this on a silicon chip. This represents a major scientific contribution, as it opens the door not only to providing a better understanding of this esoteric quantum state of matter, but also to building new quantum technologies based upon it, and to understanding the dynamics of astrophysical superfluids such as those thought to exist in the core of neutron stars

TitleContinuum Thermodynamics and Constitutive Theory
Author(s)Papenfu??, Christina
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2020.
DescriptionXVI, 238 p. 75 illus., 10 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book presents different thermodynamic approaches in the area of constitutive theory: thermodynamics of irreversible processes, rational thermodynamics, and extended thermodynamics. These different approaches are analyzed with respect to their presuppositions, as well as to their results, and each method is applied to several important examples. In many cases these examples are archetypes for numerous technologically important materials; i.e. complex materials having an internal structure. Some of the examples dealt with in this book are liquid crystals, colloid suspensions, and fiber suspensions. The book well serves students and researchers who have basic knowledge in continuum mechanics and thermodynamics. It provides a systematic overview of the vast field of thermodynamic constitutive theory, beginning from a historical perspective and concluding with outstanding questions in recent research

TitleCooling Electrons in Nanoelectronic Devices by On-Chip Demagnetisation
Author(s)Jones, Alexander Thomas
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2020.
DescriptionXIII, 94 p. 45 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteThis thesis demonstrates that an ultralow temperature refrigeration technique called "demagnetisation refrigeration" can be miniaturised and incorporated onto millimeter-sized chips to cool nanoelectronic circuits, devices and materials. Until recently, the lowest temperature ever reached in such systems was around 4 millikelvin. Here, a temperature of 1.2mK is reported in a nanoelectronic device. The thesis introduces the idea that on-chip demagnetization refrigeration can be used to cool a wide variety of nanostructures and devices to microkelvin temperatures. This brings the exciting possibility of discovering new physics, such as exotic electronic phases, in an unexplored regime and the potential to improve the performance of existing applications, including solid-state quantum technologies. Since the first demonstration of on-chip demagnetization refrigeration, described here, the technique has been taken up by other research groups around the world. The lowest on-chip temperature is currently 0.4mK. Work is now underway to adapt the technique to cool other materials and devices, ultimately leading to a platform to study nanoscale materials, devices and circuits at microkelvin temperatures.

TitleQuasicrystals : An Introduction to Structure, Physical Properties and Applications
Author(s)Suck, J.-B;Schreiber, M;H??ussler, P
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2002.
DescriptionXVIII, 564 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book provides a basic introduction to the structure and physical properties of quasicrystals, giving equal weight to experimental and theoretical progress. After introducing different aspects of tilings, including random tiling, the foundations of the crystallography of these aperiodic crystals is laid. The experimental investigation of the structure in real and reciprocal space is covered in detail, including high resolution electron microscopy, STM and AFM and electron-, X-ray- and especially neutron diffraction. The results of these experimental techniques are supplemented by the modelling of the atomic structure based on realistic ab initio pair interactions. A central role in aperiodic crystals is played by the electrons, which are most sensitive to the aperiodic atomic structure and are therefore discussed in detail:the surprising results of conduction measurements and the experimental investigation of the partial density of states for quasicrystals and their rational approximants are contrasted with the results from calculations of the electronic structure of quasicrystals. The vibrational properties of quasicrystalline alloys are extensively discussed on the basis of different computer simulations techniques and of the rich variety of experimental results obtained with mono- and polygrain quasicrystals and their approximants by neutron inelastic scattering. Likewise the magnetic properties of quasicrystalline alloys, which depend on the type of sample and show interesting transitions to different magnetic phases, are covered. The mechanical properties and the results from the investigation of defects in quasicrystals by experimental methods like electron microscopy and ion channeling and by extensive computer simulations of defects and fracture, which play a major role in the applications of quasicrystals, are presented. For the understanding of quasicrystal formation the properties of the undercooled liquid alloys, the details of the mostly extremely complicated phase diagrams, the reasons for the success of certain production techniques, the process of alloy growth, and the reasons for the stability of the non periodic crystal structure in competition with the periodic one must

TitleUnified Strength Theory and Its Applications
Author(s)Yu, Mao-Hong
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2004.
DescriptionXX, 412 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThis is a completely new theory dealing with the yield and failure of materials under multi-axial stresses. It provides a system of yield and failure criteria adopted for most materials, from metallic materials to rocks, concretes, soils, polymers etc. The Unified Strength Theory has been applied successfully to analyse the elastic limit, plastic limit capacities, the dynamic response behavior for some structures under static and moderate impulsive load, and may be implemented in some elasto-plastic finite element computer codes. The Unified Strength Theory is described in detail and by using this theory a series of results can be obtained. The Unified Strength Theory can improve the conservative Mohr-Coulomb Theory, and since intermediate principal stress is not taken into account in the Mohr-Coulomb theory and most experimental data is not pertainable to the Mohr-Coulomb Theory, a considerable economic benefit may be obtained. The book can also increase the effect of most commercial finite element computer codes
