TitleQuantum Thermodynamics : Emergence of Thermodynamic Behavior Within Composite Quantum Systems
Author(s)Gemmer, Jochen;Michel, Mathias;Mahler, G??nter
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2004.
DescriptionXX, 287 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThis tutorial essay views thermodynamics as an incomplete description of quantum systems with many degrees of freedom. The main goal is to show that the approach to equilibrium with equilibrium characterized by maximum ignorance about the open system of interest - does neither require that many particles nor is the precise way of partitioning relevant for the solient features of equilibrium and equilibration. Moreover it is indeed quantum effects that are at work in bringing about universal thermodynamic behaviour of modest size open systems. Von Neumann`s concept of entropy thus appears as much more widely useful than sometimes feared, way beyond truely macrosopic systems in equilibrium

TitleQuantum Thermodynamics : Emergence of Thermodynamic Behavior Within Composite Quantum Systems
Author(s)Gemmer, Jochen;Michel, M;Mahler, G??nter
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2009.
DescriptionXIV, 346 p. 88 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteThis introductory text treats thermodynamics as an incomplete description of quantum systems with many degrees of freedom. Its main goal is to show that the approach to equilibrium???with equilibrium characterized by maximum ignorance about the open system of interest???neither requires that many particles nor is the precise way of partitioning, relevant for the salient features of equilibrium and equilibration. Furthermore, the text depicts that it is indeed quantum effects that are at work in bringing about thermodynamic behavior of modest-sized open systems, thus making Von Neumann???s concept of entropy appear much more widely useful than sometimes feared, far beyond truly macroscopic systems in equilibrium. This significantly revised and expanded second edition pays more attention to the growing number of applications, especially non-equilibrium phenomena and thermodynamic processes of the nano-domain. In addition, to improve readability and reduce unneeded technical details, a large portion of this book has been thoroughly rewritten. From the reviews of the first edition: This textbook provides a comprehensive approach, from a theoretical physics point of view, to the question of emergence of thermodynamic behavior in quantum systems... [Its] strength lies in the careful development of the relevant concepts, in particular the question how large a system needs to be to exhibit thermodynamic behavior is addressed. TitleQuantum Networks : Dynamics of Open Nanostructures
Author(s)Mahler, G??nter;Weberru??, Volker A
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1998.
DescriptionXIX, 404 p : online resource
Abstract NoteQuantum Networks is focused on density matrix theory cast into a product operator representation, particularly adapted to describing networks of finite-state subsystems. This approach is important for understanding non-classical aspects such as single subsystem and multi-subsystem entanglement. An intuitive picture evolves of how these features are generated and destroyed by interactions with the environment. The influence of the environment renders these networks open systems, which may be approximately described by master equations. Their stochastic unravelling allows efficient simulations on the single-network level. In this way, the dynamics of individual quantum systems is intimately interrelated with information dynamics. This second edition has been revised and enlarged. For better clarity the text has been partly reorganized and figures and formulae are presented in a more attractive way. The book will be invaluable for graduates and scientists with a theoretical interest in composite quantum systems. It will help them derive an intuitive feeling for the meaning of quantum information, of recent ideas based on so-called quantum gates and for how the underlying rules depend on the physics of the network and the embedding environment

TitleQuantum Networks : Dynamics of Open Nanostructures
Author(s)Mahler, G??nter;Weberru??, Volker A
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1995.
DescriptionXV, 392 p : online resource
Abstract NoteQuantum Networks is focused on density matrix theory cast into a representation - SU(n) algebra - particularly adapted to describing networks of quasi-molecular subsystems. This approach is important for understanding how classical properties emerge within a quantum mechanical world and how non-classical features survive in a classical environment. Non-classical aspects such as single-particle and multi-particle coherence are introduced and discussed. A picture evolves of how these features are generated and destroyed by interactions with the environment. The outcome is a description of how the dynamics of individual quantum sytems are interrelated with information dynamics. This book will be invaluable for graduates and scientists with a theoretical interest in quantum systems. It will help them develop an intuitive feeling for the meaning of quantum information and how its rules depend on the environment
