TitlePotential theory
Author(s)Lester L. Helms
Edition2nd.
PublicationLondon, Springer, 2014.
Descriptionxiv, 485p.
Series(Universitext)
Abstract NotePotential Theory presents a clear path from calculus to classical potential theory and beyond, with the aim of moving the reader into the area of mathematical research as quickly as possible. The subject matter is developed from first principles using only calculus. Commencing with the inverse square law for gravitational and electromagnetic forces and the divergence theorem, the author develops methods for constructing solutions of Laplace's equation on a region with prescribed values on the boundary of the region. The latter half of the book addresses more advanced material aimed at those with the background of a senior undergraduate or beginning graduate course in real analysis. Starting with solutions of the Dirichlet problem subject to mixed boundary conditions on the simplest of regions, methods of morphing such solutions onto solutions of Poisson's equation on more general regions are developed using diffeomorphisms and the Perron-Wiener-Brelot method, culminating in application to Brownian motion. In this new edition, many exercises have been added to reconnect the subject matter to the physical sciences. This book will undoubtedly be useful to graduate students and researchers in mathematics, physics and engineering.

TitleIntroduction to twistor theory
Author(s)S. A. Huggett;K. P. Tod
Edition2nd ed.
PublicationCambridge , Cambridge University Press, 1994.
Descriptionxii,178p.
Series(London Mathematical Society Student Texts)
Abstract NoteThis book is an introduction to twistor theory and modern geometrical approaches to space-time structure at the graduate or advanced undergraduate level. It will be valuable also to the physicist as an introduction to some of the mathematics that has proved useful in these areas, and to the mathematician as an example of where sheaf cohomology and complex manifold theory can be used in physics.

TitleAdvanced calculus: A geometric view
Author(s)James J. Callahan
PublicationNew York, Springer, 2010.
Descriptionxvi, 526p.
Abstract NoteWith a fresh geometric approach that incorporates more than 250 illustrations, this textbook sets itself apart from all others in advanced calculus. Besides the classical capstones--the change of variables formula, implicit and inverse function theorems, the integral theorems of Gauss and Stokes--the text treats other important topics in differential analysis, such as Morse's lemma and the Poincaré lemma. The ideas behind most topics can be understood with just two or three variables. This invites geometric visualization; the book incorporates modern computational tools to give visualization real power. Using 2D and 3D graphics, the book offers new insights into fundamental elements of the calculus of differentiable maps, such as the role of the derivative as the local linear approximation to a map and its role in the change of variables formula for multiple integrals. The geometric theme continues with an analysis of the physical meaning of the divergence and the curl at a level of detail not found in other advanced calculus books. Advanced Calculus: A Geometric View is a textbook for undergraduates and graduate students in mathematics, the physical sciences, and economics. Prerequisites are an introduction to linear algebra and multivariable calculus. There is enough material for a year-long course on advanced calculus and for a variety of semester courses--including topics in geometry. It avoids duplicating the material of real analysis. The measured pace of the book, with its extensive examples and illustrations, make it especially suitable for independent study.

TitleAha! solutions
Author(s)Martin Erickson
PublicationWashington, Mathematical Association of America, 2009.
Descriptionxii, 207p.
Series(MAA problem books series)
Abstract NoteThis book is a collection of problems with aha! solutions. The problems are at the level of the college mathematics student, but there should be something of interest for the high school student, the teacher of mathematics, the ``math fan,'' and anyone else who loves mathematical challenges. This collection includes one hundred problems in the areas of arithmetic, geometry, algebra, calculus, probability, number theory, and combinatorics. The problems start out easy and generally get more difficult as you progress through the book. A few solutions require the use of a computer. An important feature of the book is the bonus discussion of related mathematics that follows the solution of each problem. This material is there to entertain and inform you or point you to new questions. If you don't remember a mathematical definition or concept, there is a Toolkit in the back of the book that will help.
