TitleConstants of nature: From Alph to Omega
Author(s)John D. Barrow
PublicationLondon, 1. Vintage Books 2. Vintage Books, London, 2003.
Description350p.
Abstract NoteThe constants of nature are the numbers that define the essence of the Universe. They tell us how strong its forces are, and what its fundamental laws can do: the strength of gravity, of magnetism, the speed of light, and the masses of the smallest particles of matter. They encode the deepest secrets of the Universe and express at once our greatest knowledge and our greatest ignorance about the cosmos. Their existence has taught us the profound truth that Nature abounds with unseen regularities. Yet, while we have become skilled at measuring the values of these constants, our frustrating inability to explain or predict their values shows how much we still have to learn about the inner workings of the Universe. What is the ultimate status of these constants of Nature? Are they truly constant? Could life have evolved and persisted if they were even slightly different? And are there other Universes where they are different? These are some of the issues that this book grapples with. It looks back to the discoveries of the first constants of Nature and the impact they had on scientists like Einstein. This book also tells the story of a tantalising new development in astronomy. For the first time astronomical observations are suggesting that some of the constants of Nature were different when the Universe was younger. So are our laws of Nature slowly changing? Is anything about our Universe immune from the ravages of time? Are there any constants of Nature at all?

TitleFitness of the cosmos for life: Biochemistry and fine-tuning
Author(s)John D. Barrow, ;Simon Conway Morris;Stephen Charles L. Harper Jr
PublicationCambridge, Cambridge University Press, 2007.
Abstract NoteThis highly interdisciplinary book highlights many of the ways in which chemistry plays a crucial role in making life an evolutionary possibility in the universe. Cosmologists and particle physicists have often explored how the observed laws and constants of nature lie within a narrow range that allows complexity and life to evolve and adapt. Here, these anthropic considerations are diversified in a host of new ways to identify the most sensitive features of biochemistry and astrobiology. Celebrating the classic 1913 work of Lawrence J. Henderson, The Fitness of the Environment for Life, this book looks at the delicate balance between chemistry and the ambient conditions in the universe that permit complex chemical networks and structures to exist. It will appeal to a broad range of scientists, academics, and others interested in the origin and existence of life in our universe.

TitleBook of Universes
Author(s)John D. Barrow
PublicationLondon, Bodley Head, 2011.
Descriptionxiv, 354p.
Abstract NoteThis is a book about universes. It tells a story that revolves around a single extraordinary fact: that Albert Einstein’s famous theory of relativity describes a series of entire universes. Not many solutions to Einstein’s tantalising universe equations have ever been found, but those that have are all remarkable. Some describe universes that expand in size, while others contract. Some rotate like a top, while others are chaotically unpredictable. Some are perfectly smooth, while others are lumpy. Some permit time travel into the past. Only a few allow life to evolve within them; the rest, if they exist, remain unknown and unknowable to conscious minds. Our story will encounter universes where the laws of physics can change from time to time and from one region to another, universes that have extra hidden dimensions of space and time, universes that are eternal, universes that live inside black holes, universes that end without warning, colliding universes, inflationary universes, and universes that come into being from something else – or from nothing at all.Gradually, we are introduced to the latest and the best descriptions of the Universe as we understand it today, together with the concept of the ‘Multiverse’ – the universe of all possible universes – that modern theories of physics lead us to contemplate. Here, in The Book of Universes, we are confronted with the most fantastic and far-reaching speculations within the entire realm of science.

TitleScientific legacy of Fred Hoyle
Author(s)Douglas Gough (ed.)
PublicationCambridge, Cambridge University Press, 2005.
Descriptionxv, 249p.
Contents NoteFred Hoyle was a remarkable scientist, and made an immense contribution to solving many importnat problems in astronomy. Several of his obituaries commented that he had influenced the course of astrophysics and cosmology in the second half of the twentieth century more than any other person. The book is based on a meeting that was held in recognition of his work and contains chapters by many of Hoyle's scientific collaborators, Each chapter reviews an aspect of Fred Hoyle's work; many of the subjects he tackled are still areas of hot debate and active research.
