Title | Advanced LaTeX in Academia : Applications in Research and Education |
Author(s) | ??chsner, Marco;??chsner, Andreas |
Publication | Cham, Springer International Publishing, 2021. |
Description | XI, 239 p. 225 illus., 87 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book contains a comprehensive treatment of advanced LaTeX features. The focus is on the development of high quality documents and presentations, by revealing powerful insights into the LaTeX language. The well-established advantages of the typesetting system LaTeX are the preparation and publication of platform-independent high-quality documents and automatic numbering and cross-referencing of illustrations or references. These can be extended beyond the typical applications, by creating highly dynamic electronic documents. This is commonly performed in connection with the portable document format (PDF), as well as other programming tools which allow the development of extremely flexible electronic documents |

Title | Computer Speech : Recognition, Compression, Synthesis |
Author(s) | Schroeder, Manfred R |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2004. |
Description | XXXIV, 379 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | The first edition having been sold out, gives me a welcome opportunity to augment this volume by some recent applications of speech research. A new chapter, by Holger Quast, treats speech dialogue systems and natural lan?? guage processing. Dictation programs for word processors, voice dialing for mobile phones, and dialogue systems for air travel reservations, automated banking, and translation over the telephone are at the forefront of human-machine inter?? faces. Spoken language dialogue systems are also invaluable for the physically handicapped. For researchers new to the field, the new chapter (pp. 67-106) provides an overview of fundamental linguistic concepts from phonetics, morphology, syntax, semantics and pragmatics, gramm ars and knowedge representation. Symbolic methodology, such as Norman Chomsky's traditional hierarchy of formal languages is layed out as are statistical approaches to analyze text. Proven tools of language processing are covered in detail, including finite?? state automata, Zipf's law, trees annd parsers. The second part of the new chapter introduces the building blocks of state-of-the-art dialogue systems |

Title | Voice and Speech Quality Perception : Assessment and Evaluation |
Author(s) | Jekosch, Ute |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2005. |
Description | X, 210 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | Foundations of Voice and Speech Quality Perception starts out with the fundamental question of: "How do listeners perceive voice and speech quality and how can these processes be modeled?" Any quantitative answers require measurements. This is natural for physical quantities but harder to imagine for perceptual measurands. This book approaches the problem by actually identifying major perceptual dimensions of voice and speech quality perception, defining units wherever possible and offering paradigms to position these dimensions into a structural skeleton of perceptual speech and voice quality. The emphasis is placed on voice and speech quality assessment of systems in artificial scenarios. Many scientific fields are involved. This book bridges the gap between two quite diverse fields, engineering and humanities, and establishes the new research area of Voice and Speech Quality Perception |

Title | Computer Speech : Recognition, Compression, Synthesis |
Author(s) | Schroeder, Manfred R |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1999. |
Description | XXXI, 319 p. 40 illus : online resource |
Abstract Note | Computer Speech is an introduction to multimedia speech applications and is suitable for nonspecialists. It treats such contemporary subjects as automatic speech recognition and speaker verification for banking by computer and privileged (medical, military, diplomatic) information and control access. The book also focusses on speech and audio compression for mobile communication and the Internet. The importance of subjective quality criteria is stressed. A brief history of speech research summarizes the development from the first talking machines in rococo Europe to modern x-ray methods of articulatory analysis. The book also contains introductions to human monaural and binaural hearing, and the basic concepts of signal analysis |

Description | VIII, 250 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | The ship has left the Miraflores Locks, let loose from the 'mules' run by the crews of the Panama Canal Commission. She has picked up speed while passing under the Bridge of the Americas which links de facto the Northern and Southern parts of the continent, and has headed resolutely towards the Pacific Ocean waters along the rows of boats of all kinds waiting to cross the Canal in the other direction. Through a layer of tropical clouds, the setting Sun is bleakly illuminating the tall white highrises of Panama City on the port side. It took a full day to cautiously move through the whole system of locks and cuts. Back in the stateroom, I open again a working copy of this book and type down this foreword on the pocket computer. The last chapter was received the day before while speeding through the Caribbean Sea and my main work as Editor is now over. It has been a real pleasure and a great honour to be given the oppor?? tunity of compiling this book and interacting with the various contributors through the latest technologies while being sometimes in geographically very different places. The quality of the authors, the scope of experiences they cover, the messages they convey make of this book a unique and timely publication. The reader will certainly enjoy as much as I did going through such a variety of well-inspired chapters from so many different horizons |

Title | Potentiality, Entanglement and Passion-at-a-Distance : Quantum Mechanical Studies for Abner Shimony, Volume Two |
Author(s) | Cohen, Robert S;Horne, M;Stachel, J.J |
Publication | Dordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1997. |
Description | XI, 276 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | Potentiality, Entanglement and Passion-at-a-Distance is a book for theoretical physicists and philosophers of modern physics. It treats a puzzling and provocative aspect of recent quantum physics: the apparent interaction of certain physical events that cannot share any causal connection. These are said to be `entangled' in some way, but an explanation remains elusive. Abner Shimony - to whom the book is dedicated - and others suggest the need to revive the category of what may be seen as a metaphysical potentiality. Abner has described these events without actions to link them as `passion at a distance': not active, but passive. The discussions gathered here are written by a truly remarkable cast of scientists and philosophers and shed new light on the most profound puzzles of our times |

Title | Information & On-Line Data in Astronomy |
Author(s) | Egret, D;Albrecht, M.A |
Publication | Dordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1995. |
Description | XI, 291 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | The ability of storing, managing, and giving access to the huge quantity of data collected by astronomical observatories is one of the major challenges of modern astronomy. At the same time, the growing complexity of data systems implies a change of concepts: the scientist has to manipulate data as well as information. Recent developments of the `WorldWideWeb' bring interesting answers to these problems. The book presents a wide selection of databases, archives, data centers, and information systems. Clear and up-to-date descriptions are included, together with their scientific context and motivations. Audience: This volume provides an essential tool for astronomers, librarians, data specialists and computer engineers |
