Title | Flow Noise : Theory |
Author(s) | Doolan, Con;Moreau, Danielle |
Publication | Singapore, 1. Imprint: Springer
2. Springer Nature Singapore, 2022. |
Description | XII, 188 p. 61 illus., 18 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book highlights the importance of sound produced by fluid flow or flow-induced noise. Noise created by unsteady flow creates high levels of environmental noise pollution, a known public health problem, and can compromise the acoustic qualities of marine vessels. There is a seemingly ever-growing list of modern technology that created flow-induced noise which includes aircraft, wind turbines, submarines, drones, high-speed rail, and cooling fans. More scientists and engineers are required to incorporate the effects of flow-induced noise in their work. This book also provides a comprehensive introduction to the theory underpinning the understanding of flow-induced noise |

Description | X, 433 p. 112 illus., 84 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | The book discusses the potential of higher-order interactions to model real-world relational systems. Over the last decade, networks have emerged as the paradigmatic framework to model complex systems. Yet, as simple collections of nodes and links, they are intrinsically limited to pairwise interactions, limiting our ability to describe, understand, and predict complex phenomena which arise from higher-order interactions. Here we introduce the new modeling framework of higher-order systems, where hypergraphs and simplicial complexes are used to describe complex patterns of interactions among any number of agents. This book is intended both as a first introduction and an overview of the state of the art of this rapidly emerging field, serving as a reference for network scientists interested in better modeling the interconnected world we live in |

Title | Dust-Gas Instabilities in Protoplanetary Disks : Toward Understanding Planetesimal Formation |
Author(s) | Tominaga, Ryosuke |
Publication | Singapore, 1. Imprint: Springer
2. Springer Nature Singapore, 2022. |
Description | XII, 116 p. 42 illus., 36 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | How planets form is one of the long-standing questions in astrophysics. In particular, formation scenarios of planetesimals which are kilometer-sized bodies and a precursor of planets are still unclear and under debate although some promising mechanisms have been proposed. This book highlight disk instabilities that have the potential to explain the origin of planetesimals. Using linear analyses and numerical simulations, it addresses how a disk evolves through the development of instabilities, and also presents a new instability driven by dust coagulation. As a result, the simulation demonstrates a scenario of planetesimal formation: A successive development of multiple instabilities triggers planetesimal formation in resulting dusty rings |

Title | Non-Bloch Band Theory of Non-Hermitian Systems |
Author(s) | Yokomizo, Kazuki |
Publication | Singapore, 1. Imprint: Springer
2. Springer Nature Singapore, 2022. |
Description | XIII, 92 p. 25 illus., 23 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book constructs a non-Bloch band theory and studies physics described by non-Hermitian Hamiltonian in terms of the theory proposed here. In non-Hermitian crystals, the author introduces the non-Bloch band theory which produces an energy spectrum in the limit of a large system size. The energy spectrum is then calculated from a generalized Brillouin zone for a complex Bloch wave number. While a generalized Brillouin zone becomes a unit circle on a complex plane in Hermitian systems, it becomes a circle with cusps in non-Hermitian systems. Such unique features of the generalized Brillouin zone realize remarkable phenomena peculiar in non-Hermitian systems. Further the author reveals rich aspects of non-Hermitian physics in terms of the non-Bloch band theory. First, a topological invariant defined by a generalized Brillouin zone implies the appearance of topological edge states. Second, a topological semimetal phase with exceptional points appears, The topological semimetal phase is unique to non-Hermitian systems because it is caused by the deformation of the generalized Brillouin zone by changes of system parameters. Third, the author reveals a certain relationship between the non-Bloch waves and non-Hermitian topology |

Author(s) | Bagarello, Fabio |
Publication | Cham, 1. Imprint: Springer
2. Springer International Publishing, 2022. |
Description | XI, 201 p. 5 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book is based on the analysis of canonical commutation relations (CCRs) and their possible deformations. In light of the recent interest on PT-quantum mechanics, the author presents a special deformed version of the CCRs, and discusses the consequences of this deformation both from a mathematical side, and for its possible applications to physics. These include the analysis of several non self-adjoint Hamiltonians, a novel view to the position and momentum operators, and a general approach to compute path integrals and transition probabilities using the so-called bi-coherent states. The book is meant for researchers and is also suited for advanced students. It can be used as a gentle introduction to some delicate aspects in functional analysis and in quantum mechanics for non self-adjoint observables |

Description | XIII, 395 p. 196 illus., 191 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | Any curriculum involving science and/or engineering will eventually find itself entering the realm of physics. This book seeks to introduce students to a number of the fundamental concepts in physics and illustrate how different theories were developed out of physical observations and phenomena. The book presents multi-chapter sections on electrostatics, magnetism and electromagnetic waves, with eyes on both the past and the future, touching, along the way, on Coulomb, Gauss, Maxwell, Ohm, Biot-Savart, Ampere, Faraday, Fresnel and Lorentz. The book also contains an appendix that provides the reader with a portion of the mathematical background of vector analysis and vector differential operators. The book approaches its topics through a focus on examples and problem-solving techniques, illustrating vividly how physical theories are applied to problems in engineering and science. The book is primarily aimed at undergraduate students in these two fields, but it also features chapters that are geared towards senior undergraduates working on their final year theses |

Title | Timeless Quantum Mechanics and the Early Universe |
Author(s) | Chataignier, Leonardo |
Publication | Cham, 1. Imprint: Springer
2. Springer International Publishing, 2022. |
Description | XX, 242 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | The book is based on the author's PhD thesis, which deals with the concept of time in quantum gravity and its relevance for the physics of the early Universe. It presents a consistent and complete new relational formulation of quantum gravity (more specifically, of quantum mechanics models with diffeomorphism invariance), which is applied to potentially observable cosmological effects. The work provides answers to the following questions: How can the dynamics of quantum states of matter and geometry be defined in a diffeomorphism-invariant way? What is the relevant space of physical states and which operators act on it? How are the quantum states related to probabilities in the absence of a preferred time? The answers can provide a further part of the route to constructing a fundamental theory of quantum gravity. The book is well-suited to graduate students as well as professional researchers in the fields of general relativity and gravitation, cosmology, and quantum foundations |

Title | Mathematics for Natural Scientists : Fundamentals and Basics |
Author(s) | Kantorovich, Lev |
Publication | Cham, 1. Imprint: Springer
2. Springer International Publishing, 2022. |
Description | XXIII, 768 p. 189 illus., 163 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book, now in a second revised and enlarged edition, covers a course of mathematics designed primarily for physics and engineering students. It includes all the essential material on mathematical methods, presented in a form accessible to physics students and avoiding unnecessary mathematical jargon and proofs that are comprehensible only to mathematicians. Instead, all proofs are given in a form that is clear and sufficiently convincing for a physicist. Examples, where appropriate, are given from physics contexts. Both solved and unsolved problems are provided in each section of the book. The second edition includes more on advanced algebra, polynomials and algebraic equations in significantly extended first two chapters on elementary mathematics, numerical and functional series and ordinary differential equations. Improvements have been made in all other chapters, with inclusion of additional material, to make the presentation clearer, more rigorous and coherent, and the number of problems has been increased at least twofold. Mathematics for Natural Scientists: Fundamentals and Basics is the first of two volumes. Advanced topics and their applications in physics are covered in the second volume the second edition of which the author is currently being working on |
